6. Communication Form Functions Enabled
E-mail Write, store, send and receive asynchronous messages electronically; can
include attachments of word documents, pictures, audio and other multimedia
files
Instant messaging Allows the synchronous exchange of private messages with another user;
messages primarily are in text but can include attachments of word documents,
pictures, audio, and other multimedia files
Text Messaging Short text messages sent using cell phones and wireless hand-held devices such
as Blackberrys, iPhones, etc.
Chat rooms Synchronous conversations with more than one user that primarily involve text;
can be either public or private
Bulletin boards Online public spaces, typically centered on a topic such as heal, illness, religion),
where people can post and read messages; many require registration, but only
screen names are visible (such as www.collegeconfidential.com)
Blogs Websites where entries are typically displayed in reverse chronological order;
entries can be either public or private only for users authorized by the blog

Using Multimedia and Technology Skillfully:.... Materials aligned
with the Common Core State Standards therefore should use
multimedia and technology in a way that engages students in
absorbing or expressing details of the text rather than becoming
a distraction or replacement for engaging with the text.
An important part of building knowledge in history/social
studies, science, and technical subjects is integrating
information drawn from different formats and media … materials
aligned with the Common Core State Standards might require
students to compare their own experimental results to results
about which they have read and integrate information from video
or other media with what they learn from text.
