1. Interview
How did you develop an interest in this topic?
Well, most of my family is musical so I grew up around those influences. I used to also play
guitar, but I never properly got into playing it. When I got FL Studio was when I really started
to take off and gain a passion for music production. Also being into vinyl helped me develop
an interest as I found that you can sample the music and use it in different ways in your own
songs.
What do you like most about music production?
Although it's not like filmor performing in a band where it may take longer to learn all the
information, with music production I like how immediate and personal it is and how you can
work independently. Digitally you can build a song along with the different instruments and
sounds very quickly. You can also be very expressive when producing, there are endless
combinations of sounds and music you can manipulate and combine to make different
songs.
Do you have experience producing music?
I have experience previously working on tracks with my family, but I started to get into
computers and production more when I was in secondary school. Since then, I have helped
work on and produce some albums and EP’s. Working in a studio setting with other
producers was such an amazing experience.
What is your favourite software to use and why?
My favourite software to use would probably be Ableton. Although its more complex to use
than FL Studio or Logic, it's very easy to manipulate sounds and use midi keyboards and
controls. It’s the only software that I have found that easily over dubs things without
changing or destroying the previous work. I also find this the easiest to use during live
performances.
What is your favourite music genre and why?
My favourite genre is probably hip hop. My dad used to play this genre a lot growing up and
he put me onto a lot of songs that I enjoy. I also love sampling songs from this genre and
combining it with other genres to make different styles. Apart from that, I would also say I
enjoy punk-rock music.
What producer/artist is your main inspiration?
My main inspiration is MF Doom. His story was really inspiring to me, I’ve been listening to
his music my entire life and he is the only artist that I can still always go back to and find
something new and appreciate it more and more everytime. His music is also a huge
inspiration in terms of him being able to make a song out of anything. The first song that
2. blew me away by him was called ‘Monster Zero’. He is definitely a heavy inspiration for a lot
of my work.
What do you think makes a good song?
Normally, I would say a good song is when it tells a story, but I’ve found songs that don’t
and are still good songs. I think a good song is when everything included in it is intentional
and has meaning whilst also adding something else to the sound.
Who would be your dream artist to produce for?
If he was still alive it would’ve been MF Doom. Like I said previously, he has been one of my
favourite artists for such a long time and his music meant a lot to me so it would have been
amazing to have worked with him on a song or project. However, a producer I would love to
work with now would be Prince Paul, he’s worked with lots of different artists, including MF
Doom, and is another huge inspiration to me. For rappers, Freddie Gibbs and Kanye West
would also be surreal to work in a studio with.
