The main products I had to make for a tour concept was the tour poster and ticket design. For my poster I
decided the main picture would be a glitchy fisheye effect with a triple exposure these were made using a
variation of filters and adjustment layers in Photoshop and adjusting the blending modes on each layers to
create the tripe exposure effect. The arms reaching out is meant to represent him trying to find his way out
of the darkness that we see him spiral into throughout the After Hours album. Centre of the poster is the
tour title 'The After Hours Tour'. It is important that this is center as it the first thing that the audience will
see and will let them know the purpose of the poster is to advertise tour dates. The bottom half consists of
the tour dates and cities he will be visiting, I used dates and cities listed from his previous posters and
where he has visited before. The main color scheme consists of red and black just like the album color
scheme, but there is also hints of blues and yellows amongst the poster from the fisheye lens and glitch
effect. Overall, I think this went quite well. I have created a tour poster that is eye catching with a standout
image, it also conveys the message of the audience that this is a tour poster for The Weeknd and informs
them of the dates, so it meets its purpose. To improve next time, I would edit the text for the tour dates to
be brighter and stand out. The text against the background, as well as near such a bright image seems to
disappear within the poster and makes it hard to read. I would either lighten the text color or add a stroke
outline and drop shadow to make it contrast to the background.
For the ticket design, I used the glitchy triple exposure image that I had made for the tour poster in order to
keep a consistent image throughout the tour promotion. For the layout, I had taken inspiration from
Ticketmaster and fan-made ticket designs as shown on my planning to create a ticket for the concert that
could also be kept by the audience member as memorabilia. I used the same font as my poster to list the
tour name. However, instead of adding a bevel and emboss effect, I adjusted the RGB settings to create a
similar glitch effect as the triple exposure image. I also used this same technique for the Ticketmaster logo.
Overall, this went well and is visually appealing. It has a consistent layout and matches the tour poster
which would also attract the audience and make them remember seeing the consistent branding for tout
promotion and tickets. To improve, next time, I would add something to the background of the image and
tour title to make the ticket stand out more and look more detailed as a collector's item or fan memorabilia.
Tour Poster & Tickets
For the design of my alternate album cover, I wanted to make something that looked similar to the
existing cover but linked back to the horror tones in this era. I used a close up image of The Weeknd that
looked similar to the original cover and then, following a tutorial from 'Learn by Fred', I created this effect
that looked like his face was opened up to reveal lots of eyes that I had made using the 3D tools feature in
Photoshop. The message I wanted to convey with the eyes was to refer back to The Weeknd's fame. I
wanted to try portray that all eyes are on him, there are also references within his lyrics about how the
things he has seen has affected him, so I presented it in a blatant way. The face opening up presents the
horror aspect of the album and his experiences, this is consistent with his visuals as there is elements of
gore that is shocking in some of his music videos. I also placed this album cover on a CD mockup and
created a disk design and inside and back cover that stays relevant to the 'eyes' theme so that I can
present to the audience how a special edition CD would look that can be purchased at the shows. Overall,
I am happy with how these turned out. I think it stands out and attracts the audience making them want
to find out more about The Weeknd's album and the storyline. To improve next time, I would add more of
a drop shadow behind the 'After Hours' text on the cover to make sure it stands out and isn't blending
with the cover image. I would follow these same steps for the 'XO' logo and 'parental advisory' sticker at
the bottom of the cover as they are difficult to see and hardly visible.
Alternate Album Cover & Mockups
This hoodie design is an example of something that would be part of the merch store at the store and was
meant to present the look and feel of the clothing merchandise. The front of the hoodie is mostly plain.
On the front near the chest is a logo for 'After Horus 2022 Tour' and his classic 'XO' logo in the center that
he features throughout most of his products. The sleeves near the wrists have a tiny heart that is also part
of the 'XO' logo which would be embroidered on if I was to make a physical version of this hoodie design.
TH back of the hoodie is where the main image is presented, it features an image of The Weeknd in which
I added a gradient map and motion blur effect, so it wasn't as simple as just a plain photo of the artist. I
chose to have this color scheme as green on a black hoodie to bring back the green part of the color
scheme that was starting to get lost around the amount of red I have used for the print products. This
hoodie would be a special edition that can only be purchased at the shows which would encourage fans
to purchase it as a collector's item and may also encourage them to buy concert tickets so they can also
have opportunity to buy special edition items whilst also seeing their favorite artist on stage. I think this
turned out well, I wanted to make artist merch that could still be worn day-to-day and wouldn't be too
obvious or look bad and I think I achieved this. To improve nest also seeing their favorite artist on stage. I
think this turned out well, I wanted to make artist merch that could still be worn day-to-day and wouldn't
be too obvious or look bad and I think I achieved this. To improve next time, I would add something more
to the front of the hoodie, or maybe feature a different design to make it stand out more and make it look
less plain, but overall, I am happy with the final product.
Hoodie Merchandise
For my front cover, I decided to make a collage style cover image but with a cover image. For the collage images, I added
a gradient map and motion blur to each to recolor them and make them fit the comic style better. I added a halftone
filter to the rest of the cover for that classic comic book look. I named the zine 'XO magazine' which is a part of The
Weeknd's branding and he also names his fanbase 'XO Crew' so this zine could be presented as something dedicated to
the fans. Written on the top right corner, the zine is listed as a collector's edition, informing fans that this also can only
be purchased at the shows. Although this is a magazine about each of The Weeknds album releases, I wanted to base
the cover and its color scheme around After Hours in order to remain consistent with the rest of the products made so
far, it is also designed specifically for the After Hours tour. I think this went well, it stands out amongst the other
products as it has a slightly different style but still remains consistent to After Hours ad appeals to the target audience
and his fanbase. To improve, I would adjust the 'XO Magazine' logo to different colors to make it stand out more as it
seems to fade out in front of the background, especially the 'magazine' text.
For the back cover, like many other magazines do, I wanted to feature an advertisement. For this, I made an ad teasing
the release of his next album Dawn FM. The tagline 'The Dawn Is Coming' is what was stated towards the end of the
After Hours era. It suggest to the audience that the next album is the next chapter, and him/his character are finding
their way out of the dark into the light. For the main image, I made a triple exposure combined of several promotional
shots for Dawn FM, and I made the overall picture follow a retro futuristic style. This is consistent with the Dawn FM
album as his sound throughout has vibes of 80's synths and a futuristic feel. I am happy with the final product and think
that it portrays Dawn FM well and gets the fans eager for the next release. To improve, I would possibly add a space
themed background to the image instead of a plain background to help add to the spacey- futuristic feel that the album
and visuals portray.
Zine Front & Back Cover
Trilogy is the first double page and the first release by The Weeknd. It is an album that combines his three mixtapes that
shot him into stardom. Just like the visuals for these releases, I wanted to portray a homemade, rough feel with the look of
expired film and Polaroids. On the right side of the page, I wrote about each tape over a selection of images from that era
so each mixtape could be distinguished from each other within the article. I think this went well overall and presented the
look of what The Weeknd's release was like. His color scheme was mostly monochrome which is why this double page is
quite dark in comparison to the other pages. To improve, I would fix the article text on the right page so that they
don't disappear or blend in with the background image as the article is quite hard to read.
The Kiss Land double page is quite a contrast to the previous one. This color scheme consists of neon greens and pinks. For
the layout, I included the whole article on the left side of the page and made a creative image on the right. This image was
meant to look like a collection of images, including a photo strip, that look like it's been scanned and placed onto the
magazine. I also took inspiration from Japanese street signs, similar to the visuals for this album. Overall, I think this double
page went well and I am happy with the look. It captures the feel of the album and presents to the audience how each of
his releases have distinguishably different aesthetics and color schemes. To improve, I would fix the text in the text box on
my article page to make it look more like a street sign rather than just a text box. Doing this would tie the right page in
nicely as they both follow the same theme.
Beauty Behind The Madness follows a similar color scheme to Trilogy with mainly monochrome tones and shades of yellow
for contrast. However, it is different as the album covers, and other visuals have a homemade collage style. The album
cover is what inspired me to make a collage for the left side consisting of images from that album era. The text says 'King of
The Fall' as a reference to the name of the tour he went on for this album release. For the right side of the page, it was also
inspired by the album cover as I mimicked the title text to look like the cover font. The background has this gritty and grainy
paper effect, and there is a part of the image that looks torn out to reveal a vibrant yellow pattern underneath to keep
consistent with that album eras color scheme. I am very happy with this double page, and it is one of my favorite within the
magazine. I think it presents this album era well and gives new fans a feel of what it was like and the storyline within that
era. To improve I would fix the part of the article page where the text overlaps the yellow background to ensure the whole
text stands out the best it can.
Double Pages 1-3
Similarly, to the Trilogy and Kiss Land pages, the Starboy double page is quite a large contrast compared to its previous
color scheme. For the right page I placed a variation of pictures from that era and added a gradient overlay of bright pinks
and purples to match the neon print cross that is featured so prominently across Starboy visuals and promotion. For the
background I created a space scene and a gradient of pink, purple and blue to match the title name 'Starboy'. I think this
went well. It portrays the album era well and its feature of neon colors and the cross is consistent with the album cover and
its title track music video. To improve I would blend the radial gradient in the background a bit better to match the space
scene and make it look more natural in the background.
My Dear Melancholy has a darker, sadder feel and consists of film frames and old film style visuals. On the left page I
created an image which presented three film style frames and placed the lyrics of various songs from the album. For the
article page, I kept quite a basic layout but then added a torn page layer to make it look like a note from the artist had been
stuck into the magazine. The color scheme consists of oranges, dark blue and black which portrays The Weeknd's emotions
within his lyricism on this album. I think this double page went really well and is my other favorite aside from the Beaty
Behind The Madness page as I think it most accurately captures the vibe of this album and era, even if it was short lived. To
improve, I would adjust the settings of the text on the 'note', or even warp the text to make it more accurately look like the
paper had been handwritten on.
After Hours is my final double page. For the article side I wanted to incorporate the lights from the Heartless and Blinding
Lights music video as they were visually appealing in the music video and the close up shots of them gave a trippy, dizzy
feeling. For the right page, I wanted to incorporate my album cover design in some way. I found a skeleton version of The
Weeknd, and then added the eyes and RGB glitch effect to make it match up with the album cover design and also the tour
poster and ticket design. For the text, I included lyrics from 'Escape From L.A' just like I did for the inside sleeve on the CD
mockup. The lyrics 'this place is never what it seems' also emphasizes that this album tells a story, and all isn't what it
seems. This would be intriguing to the audience and fans would enjoy seeing the album references all tie in together. This
final double page went well. As well as fitting consistently with the After Hours branding, it also ties together all the other
products I have made with this double page. To improve next time, I would remove the triple exposure image of The
Weeknd on the article page as I think that it stands out too much and doesn't fit with the rest of the page.
Double Pages 4-6
Overall, I am happy with the final magazine as a whole. In my opinion, I have presented each album and their eras well and
it portrays to the audience that The Weeknd has distinguishably different themes, color schemes, and layouts for each
album release. He likes to tell a story within each album. This zine is a good addition to my project and to the tour
merchandise as it would be an item that avid fans would be likely to purchase as it reviews The Weeknd's journey
throughout his career. It is also labeled as a collector's edition so it would be valuable memorabilia to own which may
encourage fans even more to buy the zine and buy concert tickets as the event as a whole with the special edition items
will feel more like a closed event as these items wouldn't be available to any person at any time. To improve the zine as a
whole, next time I would add a contents page and page numbers to each of the pages with a summary of what the zine is
about and introduce each of the double pages. This would make the zine also look more professional as most official
magazines feature a contents page and page numbers.
Zine Overview
Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and what attracted you to it?
For my FMP, I decided to design a tour concept for The Weeknd and create promotional products for this tour. I was inspired to choose
this for my project whilst working on contextual research at the start of the project. Aries Moross had created the promotional material
for Parklife festival and seeing their work inspired me to create my own concept. The overall theme of my project has a darker colour
scheme that fits the themes of the album and its storyline as well as existing products made around this album. It is mainly inspired by
existing After Hours visuals as I wanted to make sure my project was cohesive and could fit in well with his existing work.
What research did you undertake and how did it help develop your
project?
At the beginning of FMP, I started off with contextual research. This is where I researched a number of graphic designers and their work and
how they inspire me for my own work. This was important as my research on Aries Moross helped spark and develop my idea for this
project. Next, I carried out subject research on my chosen artist where I looked into each of his album eras and aesthetics, and the tours and
its set designs and made mood boards to present each album. For the album eras, I looked at the color schemes, fonts and visuals and how
each album has their own unique theme. With the tour designs, I then explored how these album aesthetics and music is presented on
stage to a live audience. This helped we develop inspiration for how I want my project to look, and how existing promotional material for my
album already looks. I carried out existing project research with other artists tour posters, stage design, and promotional products which
helped me find out about how other artists approach a theme for their releases and how consistently they follow a theme. I did audience
research in which I investigated The Weeknd’s current target audience, as my products must appeal to his existing audience. I also looked
into the 18-25 age group as that is my general target audience. This was helpful as it gave me insight into how I can make my products to
appeal to the audience and what kind of style of products they would like to see. Finally, I completed production method research in which I
looked at tutorials and other designers approaches to making posters and visuals to help me gain understanding of how I would make my
own. For my print products, I investigated the tools I would use within Photoshop, as well as different adjustment layers and blending styles
and how they effect the image. I had originally planned to make animated visuals on After Effects so I researched what tools and plugin I
would use to help me create them, as well as watching YouTube tutorials on how others create different animations. Overall, I feel research
went successfully. I learned a lot about my subject and the products I was planning to make, which helped me to feel more prepared with
what I will need to focus on within my own work and how I will need to keep a consistent theme and style throughout in order to remain
consistent with The Weeknd’s overall branding and theme for After Hours.
How did you develop and improve your ideas throughout the project?
At the start of my project, my main idea was to create stage visuals for an artists’ concert, and then create promotional products for a tour
concept. However, as my ideas developed, I decided to focus more on the promotional products first rather than the animations. I
decided this because I have more experience creating print products than animation, I also had a lot more inspiration and ideas for
layouts, color schemes, etc. for my print products whilst going through the research and planning stage. I also decided instead of a mini
zine for the merch, that I would make a larger magazine to still be part of the merch but more detailed. Instead of tour photos and behind
the scenes, I decided to apply my subject research and create double pages for each album era and write about the storyline and themes
within the album.
What was the outcome of the project/task?
By the end of the project, I had completed a tour concept and the promotional products for it. I have created a tour poster and ticket. For
merch I have designed a hoodie and a zine about each of The Weeknd’s albums so far. My tour poster has an image of The Weeknd in a
fisheye lense style. The logo/font for this poster has a glitch effect made from editing the RGB settings , and then the tour dates are
presented on the bottom half of the poster. A similar layout follows for my ticket design. I have used the half exposure image from within
the fisheye lense photo to present on the ticket, along with the same font used on the poster to make sure its cohesive. I created an
alternate album cover that is similar to the original cover, but with an effect that opens up to reveal eyes which I felt were relevant to the
lyrics and symbolism within the album and created mockups of a CD for these. For merchandise, I made a hoodie mockup where I placed
the 'After Hours' and 'XO' logo, as well as a motion blurred image of The Weeknd on the back. I also made a zine, which features a double
page for each album he has released along with an article that talks about the theme of each album and how it is presented within the
lyricism and visuals. This is a tour concept package that could be presented to the artist for what could inspire his tour branding and visuals.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before you started?
Before I started my project, I was unsure about starting my FMP as I had entered the project without any ideas or inspiration for what I
was going to make. I had some vague ideas about possibly creating a brand concept, or re-branding a specific brand but I wasn’t solid on
the idea or how I wanted it to look. However, whilst working through contextual research I was able to develop my idea into a tour
concept. At the beginning of my idea development, I had originally planned to focus more on tour visuals using After Effects but ended up
focusing more on print. I was excited to start my final project, but I was also nervous as it is what the past two years have been working
towards and I wanted to demonstrate the skills I have learnt throughout this course.
What do you think about your project development and how did it help
you to refine your idea?
For my project development, I felt uneasy at first and unorganized. This is because my original plan for my project was to create visuals and
animations in After Effects to display on stage for the artist. However, when it came to planning and the production stage, I was still
struggling with inspiration for it. I had ideas of different animations, but I wasn't sure how I was going to combine them together and make
them cohesive, as well as relevant to the existing After Hours visuals. Due to this, I continued on with production making the print based
products I had planned out, which as time progressed, led me to focusing on print. Focusing on print allowed me to add more detail to my
zine which made me feel like my products were a better quality rather than quantity. Although I was unsure at first, my project
development was necessary in order for me to create my final package.
How did you feel when the project was completed and why?
When the project was completed, I felt accomplished but also nervous as it is my last project and final grade. Because I decided to focus
mainly on print, I knew how to make the products but hoped that my planning and production diary presented this process effectively. I
was happy with my final products and felt that I had made enough visual products to present a tour concept to an artist as I had created
a poster, alternate album cover, zine and merch. It is a promotional package that includes all the necessary branding.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• A positive point about this project is that I was able to further develop my skills in Photoshop and use tools that I haven't had any
experience is. Using 3D tools for the eye effect was a good learning experience and I felt accomplished with the final result after having no
prior experience and think it fit well on the album cover design.
• I was able to be creatively expressive with this project and had the freedom to choose a topic that interested me. I was able to use my
strengths in media and using Photoshop to create products for a tour that I am happy with and had the freedom to make it look bold and
unique whilst also ensuring it was consistent with my chosen artists' aesthetic.
• Working on this project has helped me learn and start to explore a sector of media within the music industry. Previously, I had little
knowledge on the media side incorporated for projects such as a tour and how wide of a scale it can be with products that can be made. My
research into different artists' tours and posters helped educate me. Also, looking at graphic designers such as Aries Moross or Silent House
for visuals was inspiring for me and what I wanted to make within my project.
What challenges did you face and how did you respond to them? Try
and think of at least 3...
• One challenge I faced at the beginning of production was issues with After Effects. Since I had originally planned to make animated visuals,
I started the week off by working on the introduction visual at the time since I was also struggling with inspiration at the time. Whilst I was
able to create the animations, I had issues where After Effects would close and I would lose my previous work even after saving. This is an
issue I had faced before using this software and ended up having to go back to it. So, instead I saved what I had made and moved onto the
print based products in the meantime.
• As it was my first experience using 3D tools in Photoshop, I didn't realize how powerful it was and how it would slow down the software and
my computer whilst in use. When I was trying to make the 3D eye, if I had to go back and resolve any issues it would cause the whole
application to freeze up and I couldn't select anything, even after restarting the software. To resolve this, I made everything else in the
image at college, and then went home on my own PC and made the eyes and added them at the end to finish it off.
• A challenge I faced was due to my lack of time management skills and planning. For everything I planned to make, I underestimated how
long it would take and if it would be realistic to make at a high quality within the given time frame. Therefore, I was unable to make the
visuals I had planned to make alongside the print products, and my zine was more time consuming and ended up taking longer than
expected. In response to this, I decided the best thing to do was work towards my strengths in Photoshop and focus on making the
print products I had planned and ensured they were at a high quality, rather than rushing through and not working to my best abilities.
What were the negative points about the experience, and what could
you have done to improve them?
• A negative point of this experience is that I struggled with time management and organization a lot more in comparison to my previous
projects this year as it is a much larger project and required more products made and detail in planning. Because of this struggle, I ended up
not making the amount that I had hoped to. Originally, I had planned to make several concert visuals, tour poster and tickets, album cover
and alternate music posters, and a variation of merchandise which included a mini zine. I didn't have time to create the visuals, or a variety
of music posters but I still finished with majority of the print products I had planned. To improve, next time I would be more detailed with
my schedule and make sure I can realistic create everything within the set time frame that would still be at a high quality.
• During the research stage, we had to complete different areas such as subject, audience, production method, and existing product research.
Out of these four, I struggled with my audience research. I knew that my target audience was 18-25 and also fans of The Weeknd, but I
struggled finding a range of statistics for this age group, as well as with music that I have written about. I also struggled with the audience
research aspect in my previous 'The Grid' project which lacked detail on our audience. To improve next time, it may be helpful for me to
make surveys for those in this age range to complete, or even interview fans of The Weeknd to help add more in depth research into my
target audience and develop a better understanding of what they would be looking for in tour promotional products.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of poor,
satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
In my opinion, I would rate my final piece a satisfactory, or possibly good with some of the products. This is because overall I have managed to
create what I had planned to- a tour concept with promotional products. It would probably rate higher if I had managed my time better to
make more products or merch within the time frame to bulk up the project and amount of products, but I am happy with the products that I
am finishing the project with. With my products, I have created multiple pieces of work at a high level that demonstrate a variety of skills I have
developed in Photoshop. For my album cover I worked with 3D tools for the first time. I also used different adjustment layers and tools that I
haven’t previously such as gradient maps, or the different blur settings to edit existing photos into my own work. I’ve created a magazine,
along with the tour promotional products that also helps present the artist and promote their tour, as well as their previous work.
How well did your project apply the characteristics and conventions of the
medium you worked in? How did it appeal to your target audience?
I think my project as a whole applied the characteristics and conventions of my area quite well. I have created a tour concept with promotional products.
Within tour promotion for other artists, you will mainly see a tour poster, tickets, and merchandise. Also, sometimes visuals which is the only part I am
lacking in my own project. I have also included extra aspects as I have also made an alternate album cover and a zine about the artist which isn't always
included as part of a tour package, so I was successful in applying the conventions for the tour as a whole.
As shown in existing products and content for the After Hours album, its color scheme is quite dark with deep reds, greens, and golds. It is meant to hint
at the audience about his character taking a dark path and trying to get through, there is also callbacks to old horror movies which is referenced from
music videos to even how the character looks throughout this album era. With my projects I remained consistent to the color scheme and haunting feel
of existing work for After Hours. I remade my own version of the After Hours logo and alternated it for tour poster/ticket design and made sure that my
designs were shocking and eye catching similarly to existing work so it would fit well within The Weeknd's branding and also appeal to his target
audience that enjoy and encourage his existing work.
The overall look and feel of the products appeals to my target audience. This album and its existing products has already received critical acclaim and is
thoroughly enjoyed by fans. Remaining consistent to the existing theme appeals to my audience and The Weeknd fans, they would also enjoy the horror
aspect incorporated into it as it is familiar to his music and helps keeps a consistent theme with that also. The designs are shocking, eye catching, and
interesting to look at and would attract a younger audience or fans of his music rather than an older audience who might not enjoy some of the glitch
effects or horror style within the album cover.

Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
In what ways was the overall project a success?
The overall project was successful because I was able to complete a tour concept of print products that demonstrate my technical skills
and creativity. Although I had to use existing photos of the artist I chose, I was able to transform them into my own original thing. I did
this using tools in Photoshop to create half exposure effects, halftone print, gradient overlays, motion blurs and also glitch effects for
images and texts to create unique pieces of work that are colorful and eye-catching whilst also matching the themes of The Weeknd's
existing work without directly re-using it.
What elements did not go well and why?
With my magazine double pages, I think that I could have improved the Trilogy double page. This is because I feel like on the right side, the
articles are difficult to read in front of the background. With this being one of the first pages, it could deter my audience and they might stop
reading if they assume each page is as difficult to read as this one. To improve it next time I would go back and change the font to a different
color to be more readable. I wouldn't want to adjust the text/photo layout if possible as I liked the layout I originally have for it.
On my tour poster, I also feel like the text of the tour dates at the bottom half of the page is quite dark and could be quite hard to read in
different lighting, I didn’t notice this as much until I have finished the project. This would deter the audience as they may be unable to see
what tour date and what cities The Weeknd is visiting which would lower ticket sales. Next time, I would go back and fix this and use a lighter
red shade that stands out amongst the also dark background so that the dates can definitely be readable no matter what location or lighting it
is shown in.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember, skills
aren't just technical, remember things like organization, time
management, communication, etc. as well]
Starting out with the research and planning stage, I was able to develop my organization skills. This is because, we followed a schedule
each week with what part of pre-production we had to focus on, and a set number of days. This enabled me to stay organized and
understand what stage I should be at throughout the project. I also had to demonstrate time management skills to help keep to this
schedule. When I got to the production stage I was able to demonstrate more technical skills as I used Photoshop to create all the
products in my project. I combined a variety of skills using different tool such as 3D tools, camera raw filter and other filters, and
adjustment layers/gradient maps to create the desired effects that are presented throughout my products. It was very important that I do
a lot to edit these photos in production as they were not my photos taken and are existing photos of The Weeknd. This meant that I had
to adjust the photos and add different effects to remake the photos to be as unique to me and my own work as possible.
What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you
successful?
Whilst carrying out research for this project and looking into the After Hours era. I was fascinated by the movie references throughout the
music videos, specifically the horror aspect and even the font being inspired by The Exorcism. This led me to be inspired to want to more
blatantly incorporate those themes within my print products compared to his existing products which don't fully demonstrate this side of the
storyline within this album. I also found that within the music videos and telling the story, especially with the 'Heartless' and 'Blinding Lights'
music videos, there are scenes that are trippy where the camera and music warps which inspired me to create the glitchy text effects on the
tour poster and tickets. Overall, I wanted to present to the audience more detail of the storyline. I wanted them to look at the album cover, and
the tour poster and see that it isn't just another album by The Weeknd, but there is more of a storyline within this and all is not as it seems. I
feel like I was successful in conveying this message, OI think my products intrigue the audience and make them want to listen to the album or
go to the tour to find out what's happening with the After Hours world and learn of the story that The Weeknd is trying to tell his listeners.
What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings?
"I loved the album cover and the awesome graphics at the back of the jacket! And the magazine is good, the cover made me interested to read
it. How his life influenced his music from partying to obviously love.. it's a good read. Overall, you've excelled, and I would want to go and see
this tour in person."
"I really like the fisheye effect you did on the poster, it's really creative. The magazine is well detailed. Everything blends together and works
well as a whole. The only thing I would change is that I would change the text on the Trilogy part, one part is white, and the rest is black so I
would make sure it matches."
What would you do differently in the future and why?
If I could do this project differently in the future, I would like to have my key focus be on visuals and working in After Effects rather than the
print products. This is because, whilst researching about existing products and tour promotion I had developed an interest into the visuals side.
Silent House has a team that focus on stage design, visuals, sound, etc. And I would like to learn more in that area and develop my skills as
something new in comparison to print which I am already familiar in. With planning, I would add more detail into my schedule and make sure I
consistently stick to it, so I am able to complete all the products I intended to make at high quality and within the deadline. For the design
aspect, I would like to lean even more into that horror aspect within my products like I did with the album cover. For example, with my tour
poster I created a trippy and glitchy fisheye style effect, and next time I could make something that looks scarier and more shocking, similarly
to the album cover.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the future, what would you do
differently?
If I were to make a similar project in the future, I would firstly make sure I was more organized and had better time management skills. Although I am
happy submitting my final work, I was unable to make everything I aspired to for this project due to poor time management. To make this happen, I
would start by making sure I knew exactly what products I will be making and how I want them to look before getting too far into planning and
production. I will do more experiments beforehand that are relevant and similar to my planned product to make sure I knew how to make the
product efficiently. This would allow me to be more organized in future projects and possibly give me extra time at the end of production to expand
my project. I would also have liked to have made the After Effects animation and possibly a stage design, so I would plan time to make those in the
beginning and make sure I have timeline of what I would like to make for it in advance.
How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please identify
the appropriate resources and courses. For example, webpages,
tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
To develop my skills for future projects, I would like to advance my knowledge and skills in After Effects to allow me to make the visuals for the tour
concept at a high quality. The best way for me to learn this is to watch YouTube tutorials and try to recreate them, this is the also the most efficient way I
have learned to use Photoshop. Max Novak is an example of whose tutorials are helpful and I have followed previously to learn the basic tools of this
software. I could also further my skills in 3D design in Photoshop as I had experimented with 3D tools to create the eyes for my album cover. 'Learn From
Fred' does lots of tutorials for experimental art in Photoshop and incorporates 3D tools.
What personal attributes could you develop to ensure you are working
at a professional level?
To ensure I am working at a professional level, I would need to develop my organizational skills. In industry, I might not be able to change my project
around or adjust different aspects throughout production like I did by deciding to focus on print instead of visuals. This means that I will have to make
sure to correctly plan ahead for exactly what products to make beforehand and how I am going to make them. This would also have to be a solid decision
as in industry when communicating with clients you would both need to know what products are being made. I would also need to improve on my time
management skills to ensure that I can work to a set deadline and also make all the products I plan to at a high quality and within the time frame.

  • 2. Evaluation Overview This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects. When using this form it is good practice to: • Use appropriate terminology. • Stay concise and focus on key points. • Evaluate and analyse your statements. • Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made. Delete this slide when done! Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level. Level 3 Extended Diploma Grading Matrix - https://bit.ly/2Jnqj3v
  • 4. The main products I had to make for a tour concept was the tour poster and ticket design. For my poster I decided the main picture would be a glitchy fisheye effect with a triple exposure these were made using a variation of filters and adjustment layers in Photoshop and adjusting the blending modes on each layers to create the tripe exposure effect. The arms reaching out is meant to represent him trying to find his way out of the darkness that we see him spiral into throughout the After Hours album. Centre of the poster is the tour title 'The After Hours Tour'. It is important that this is center as it the first thing that the audience will see and will let them know the purpose of the poster is to advertise tour dates. The bottom half consists of the tour dates and cities he will be visiting, I used dates and cities listed from his previous posters and where he has visited before. The main color scheme consists of red and black just like the album color scheme, but there is also hints of blues and yellows amongst the poster from the fisheye lens and glitch effect. Overall, I think this went quite well. I have created a tour poster that is eye catching with a standout image, it also conveys the message of the audience that this is a tour poster for The Weeknd and informs them of the dates, so it meets its purpose. To improve next time, I would edit the text for the tour dates to be brighter and stand out. The text against the background, as well as near such a bright image seems to disappear within the poster and makes it hard to read. I would either lighten the text color or add a stroke outline and drop shadow to make it contrast to the background. For the ticket design, I used the glitchy triple exposure image that I had made for the tour poster in order to keep a consistent image throughout the tour promotion. For the layout, I had taken inspiration from Ticketmaster and fan-made ticket designs as shown on my planning to create a ticket for the concert that could also be kept by the audience member as memorabilia. I used the same font as my poster to list the tour name. However, instead of adding a bevel and emboss effect, I adjusted the RGB settings to create a similar glitch effect as the triple exposure image. I also used this same technique for the Ticketmaster logo. Overall, this went well and is visually appealing. It has a consistent layout and matches the tour poster which would also attract the audience and make them remember seeing the consistent branding for tout promotion and tickets. To improve, next time, I would add something to the background of the image and tour title to make the ticket stand out more and look more detailed as a collector's item or fan memorabilia. Tour Poster & Tickets
  • 5. For the design of my alternate album cover, I wanted to make something that looked similar to the existing cover but linked back to the horror tones in this era. I used a close up image of The Weeknd that looked similar to the original cover and then, following a tutorial from 'Learn by Fred', I created this effect that looked like his face was opened up to reveal lots of eyes that I had made using the 3D tools feature in Photoshop. The message I wanted to convey with the eyes was to refer back to The Weeknd's fame. I wanted to try portray that all eyes are on him, there are also references within his lyrics about how the things he has seen has affected him, so I presented it in a blatant way. The face opening up presents the horror aspect of the album and his experiences, this is consistent with his visuals as there is elements of gore that is shocking in some of his music videos. I also placed this album cover on a CD mockup and created a disk design and inside and back cover that stays relevant to the 'eyes' theme so that I can present to the audience how a special edition CD would look that can be purchased at the shows. Overall, I am happy with how these turned out. I think it stands out and attracts the audience making them want to find out more about The Weeknd's album and the storyline. To improve next time, I would add more of a drop shadow behind the 'After Hours' text on the cover to make sure it stands out and isn't blending with the cover image. I would follow these same steps for the 'XO' logo and 'parental advisory' sticker at the bottom of the cover as they are difficult to see and hardly visible. Alternate Album Cover & Mockups
  • 6. This hoodie design is an example of something that would be part of the merch store at the store and was meant to present the look and feel of the clothing merchandise. The front of the hoodie is mostly plain. On the front near the chest is a logo for 'After Horus 2022 Tour' and his classic 'XO' logo in the center that he features throughout most of his products. The sleeves near the wrists have a tiny heart that is also part of the 'XO' logo which would be embroidered on if I was to make a physical version of this hoodie design. TH back of the hoodie is where the main image is presented, it features an image of The Weeknd in which I added a gradient map and motion blur effect, so it wasn't as simple as just a plain photo of the artist. I chose to have this color scheme as green on a black hoodie to bring back the green part of the color scheme that was starting to get lost around the amount of red I have used for the print products. This hoodie would be a special edition that can only be purchased at the shows which would encourage fans to purchase it as a collector's item and may also encourage them to buy concert tickets so they can also have opportunity to buy special edition items whilst also seeing their favorite artist on stage. I think this turned out well, I wanted to make artist merch that could still be worn day-to-day and wouldn't be too obvious or look bad and I think I achieved this. To improve nest also seeing their favorite artist on stage. I think this turned out well, I wanted to make artist merch that could still be worn day-to-day and wouldn't be too obvious or look bad and I think I achieved this. To improve next time, I would add something more to the front of the hoodie, or maybe feature a different design to make it stand out more and make it look less plain, but overall, I am happy with the final product. Hoodie Merchandise
  • 7. For my front cover, I decided to make a collage style cover image but with a cover image. For the collage images, I added a gradient map and motion blur to each to recolor them and make them fit the comic style better. I added a halftone filter to the rest of the cover for that classic comic book look. I named the zine 'XO magazine' which is a part of The Weeknd's branding and he also names his fanbase 'XO Crew' so this zine could be presented as something dedicated to the fans. Written on the top right corner, the zine is listed as a collector's edition, informing fans that this also can only be purchased at the shows. Although this is a magazine about each of The Weeknds album releases, I wanted to base the cover and its color scheme around After Hours in order to remain consistent with the rest of the products made so far, it is also designed specifically for the After Hours tour. I think this went well, it stands out amongst the other products as it has a slightly different style but still remains consistent to After Hours ad appeals to the target audience and his fanbase. To improve, I would adjust the 'XO Magazine' logo to different colors to make it stand out more as it seems to fade out in front of the background, especially the 'magazine' text. For the back cover, like many other magazines do, I wanted to feature an advertisement. For this, I made an ad teasing the release of his next album Dawn FM. The tagline 'The Dawn Is Coming' is what was stated towards the end of the After Hours era. It suggest to the audience that the next album is the next chapter, and him/his character are finding their way out of the dark into the light. For the main image, I made a triple exposure combined of several promotional shots for Dawn FM, and I made the overall picture follow a retro futuristic style. This is consistent with the Dawn FM album as his sound throughout has vibes of 80's synths and a futuristic feel. I am happy with the final product and think that it portrays Dawn FM well and gets the fans eager for the next release. To improve, I would possibly add a space themed background to the image instead of a plain background to help add to the spacey- futuristic feel that the album and visuals portray. Zine Front & Back Cover
  • 8. Trilogy is the first double page and the first release by The Weeknd. It is an album that combines his three mixtapes that shot him into stardom. Just like the visuals for these releases, I wanted to portray a homemade, rough feel with the look of expired film and Polaroids. On the right side of the page, I wrote about each tape over a selection of images from that era so each mixtape could be distinguished from each other within the article. I think this went well overall and presented the look of what The Weeknd's release was like. His color scheme was mostly monochrome which is why this double page is quite dark in comparison to the other pages. To improve, I would fix the article text on the right page so that they don't disappear or blend in with the background image as the article is quite hard to read. The Kiss Land double page is quite a contrast to the previous one. This color scheme consists of neon greens and pinks. For the layout, I included the whole article on the left side of the page and made a creative image on the right. This image was meant to look like a collection of images, including a photo strip, that look like it's been scanned and placed onto the magazine. I also took inspiration from Japanese street signs, similar to the visuals for this album. Overall, I think this double page went well and I am happy with the look. It captures the feel of the album and presents to the audience how each of his releases have distinguishably different aesthetics and color schemes. To improve, I would fix the text in the text box on my article page to make it look more like a street sign rather than just a text box. Doing this would tie the right page in nicely as they both follow the same theme. Beauty Behind The Madness follows a similar color scheme to Trilogy with mainly monochrome tones and shades of yellow for contrast. However, it is different as the album covers, and other visuals have a homemade collage style. The album cover is what inspired me to make a collage for the left side consisting of images from that album era. The text says 'King of The Fall' as a reference to the name of the tour he went on for this album release. For the right side of the page, it was also inspired by the album cover as I mimicked the title text to look like the cover font. The background has this gritty and grainy paper effect, and there is a part of the image that looks torn out to reveal a vibrant yellow pattern underneath to keep consistent with that album eras color scheme. I am very happy with this double page, and it is one of my favorite within the magazine. I think it presents this album era well and gives new fans a feel of what it was like and the storyline within that era. To improve I would fix the part of the article page where the text overlaps the yellow background to ensure the whole text stands out the best it can. Double Pages 1-3
  • 9. Similarly, to the Trilogy and Kiss Land pages, the Starboy double page is quite a large contrast compared to its previous color scheme. For the right page I placed a variation of pictures from that era and added a gradient overlay of bright pinks and purples to match the neon print cross that is featured so prominently across Starboy visuals and promotion. For the background I created a space scene and a gradient of pink, purple and blue to match the title name 'Starboy'. I think this went well. It portrays the album era well and its feature of neon colors and the cross is consistent with the album cover and its title track music video. To improve I would blend the radial gradient in the background a bit better to match the space scene and make it look more natural in the background. My Dear Melancholy has a darker, sadder feel and consists of film frames and old film style visuals. On the left page I created an image which presented three film style frames and placed the lyrics of various songs from the album. For the article page, I kept quite a basic layout but then added a torn page layer to make it look like a note from the artist had been stuck into the magazine. The color scheme consists of oranges, dark blue and black which portrays The Weeknd's emotions within his lyricism on this album. I think this double page went really well and is my other favorite aside from the Beaty Behind The Madness page as I think it most accurately captures the vibe of this album and era, even if it was short lived. To improve, I would adjust the settings of the text on the 'note', or even warp the text to make it more accurately look like the paper had been handwritten on. After Hours is my final double page. For the article side I wanted to incorporate the lights from the Heartless and Blinding Lights music video as they were visually appealing in the music video and the close up shots of them gave a trippy, dizzy feeling. For the right page, I wanted to incorporate my album cover design in some way. I found a skeleton version of The Weeknd, and then added the eyes and RGB glitch effect to make it match up with the album cover design and also the tour poster and ticket design. For the text, I included lyrics from 'Escape From L.A' just like I did for the inside sleeve on the CD mockup. The lyrics 'this place is never what it seems' also emphasizes that this album tells a story, and all isn't what it seems. This would be intriguing to the audience and fans would enjoy seeing the album references all tie in together. This final double page went well. As well as fitting consistently with the After Hours branding, it also ties together all the other products I have made with this double page. To improve next time, I would remove the triple exposure image of The Weeknd on the article page as I think that it stands out too much and doesn't fit with the rest of the page. Double Pages 4-6
  • 10. Overall, I am happy with the final magazine as a whole. In my opinion, I have presented each album and their eras well and it portrays to the audience that The Weeknd has distinguishably different themes, color schemes, and layouts for each album release. He likes to tell a story within each album. This zine is a good addition to my project and to the tour merchandise as it would be an item that avid fans would be likely to purchase as it reviews The Weeknd's journey throughout his career. It is also labeled as a collector's edition so it would be valuable memorabilia to own which may encourage fans even more to buy the zine and buy concert tickets as the event as a whole with the special edition items will feel more like a closed event as these items wouldn't be available to any person at any time. To improve the zine as a whole, next time I would add a contents page and page numbers to each of the pages with a summary of what the zine is about and introduce each of the double pages. This would make the zine also look more professional as most official magazines feature a contents page and page numbers. Zine Overview
  • 11. Project Overview In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
  • 12. What was the theme of your project and what attracted you to it? For my FMP, I decided to design a tour concept for The Weeknd and create promotional products for this tour. I was inspired to choose this for my project whilst working on contextual research at the start of the project. Aries Moross had created the promotional material for Parklife festival and seeing their work inspired me to create my own concept. The overall theme of my project has a darker colour scheme that fits the themes of the album and its storyline as well as existing products made around this album. It is mainly inspired by existing After Hours visuals as I wanted to make sure my project was cohesive and could fit in well with his existing work.
  • 13. What research did you undertake and how did it help develop your project? At the beginning of FMP, I started off with contextual research. This is where I researched a number of graphic designers and their work and how they inspire me for my own work. This was important as my research on Aries Moross helped spark and develop my idea for this project. Next, I carried out subject research on my chosen artist where I looked into each of his album eras and aesthetics, and the tours and its set designs and made mood boards to present each album. For the album eras, I looked at the color schemes, fonts and visuals and how each album has their own unique theme. With the tour designs, I then explored how these album aesthetics and music is presented on stage to a live audience. This helped we develop inspiration for how I want my project to look, and how existing promotional material for my album already looks. I carried out existing project research with other artists tour posters, stage design, and promotional products which helped me find out about how other artists approach a theme for their releases and how consistently they follow a theme. I did audience research in which I investigated The Weeknd’s current target audience, as my products must appeal to his existing audience. I also looked into the 18-25 age group as that is my general target audience. This was helpful as it gave me insight into how I can make my products to appeal to the audience and what kind of style of products they would like to see. Finally, I completed production method research in which I looked at tutorials and other designers approaches to making posters and visuals to help me gain understanding of how I would make my own. For my print products, I investigated the tools I would use within Photoshop, as well as different adjustment layers and blending styles and how they effect the image. I had originally planned to make animated visuals on After Effects so I researched what tools and plugin I would use to help me create them, as well as watching YouTube tutorials on how others create different animations. Overall, I feel research went successfully. I learned a lot about my subject and the products I was planning to make, which helped me to feel more prepared with what I will need to focus on within my own work and how I will need to keep a consistent theme and style throughout in order to remain consistent with The Weeknd’s overall branding and theme for After Hours.
  • 14. How did you develop and improve your ideas throughout the project? At the start of my project, my main idea was to create stage visuals for an artists’ concert, and then create promotional products for a tour concept. However, as my ideas developed, I decided to focus more on the promotional products first rather than the animations. I decided this because I have more experience creating print products than animation, I also had a lot more inspiration and ideas for layouts, color schemes, etc. for my print products whilst going through the research and planning stage. I also decided instead of a mini zine for the merch, that I would make a larger magazine to still be part of the merch but more detailed. Instead of tour photos and behind the scenes, I decided to apply my subject research and create double pages for each album era and write about the storyline and themes within the album.
  • 15. What was the outcome of the project/task? By the end of the project, I had completed a tour concept and the promotional products for it. I have created a tour poster and ticket. For merch I have designed a hoodie and a zine about each of The Weeknd’s albums so far. My tour poster has an image of The Weeknd in a fisheye lense style. The logo/font for this poster has a glitch effect made from editing the RGB settings , and then the tour dates are presented on the bottom half of the poster. A similar layout follows for my ticket design. I have used the half exposure image from within the fisheye lense photo to present on the ticket, along with the same font used on the poster to make sure its cohesive. I created an alternate album cover that is similar to the original cover, but with an effect that opens up to reveal eyes which I felt were relevant to the lyrics and symbolism within the album and created mockups of a CD for these. For merchandise, I made a hoodie mockup where I placed the 'After Hours' and 'XO' logo, as well as a motion blurred image of The Weeknd on the back. I also made a zine, which features a double page for each album he has released along with an article that talks about the theme of each album and how it is presented within the lyricism and visuals. This is a tour concept package that could be presented to the artist for what could inspire his tour branding and visuals.
  • 16. Personal Response This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
  • 17. How did you feel about the project before you started? Before I started my project, I was unsure about starting my FMP as I had entered the project without any ideas or inspiration for what I was going to make. I had some vague ideas about possibly creating a brand concept, or re-branding a specific brand but I wasn’t solid on the idea or how I wanted it to look. However, whilst working through contextual research I was able to develop my idea into a tour concept. At the beginning of my idea development, I had originally planned to focus more on tour visuals using After Effects but ended up focusing more on print. I was excited to start my final project, but I was also nervous as it is what the past two years have been working towards and I wanted to demonstrate the skills I have learnt throughout this course.
  • 18. What do you think about your project development and how did it help you to refine your idea? For my project development, I felt uneasy at first and unorganized. This is because my original plan for my project was to create visuals and animations in After Effects to display on stage for the artist. However, when it came to planning and the production stage, I was still struggling with inspiration for it. I had ideas of different animations, but I wasn't sure how I was going to combine them together and make them cohesive, as well as relevant to the existing After Hours visuals. Due to this, I continued on with production making the print based products I had planned out, which as time progressed, led me to focusing on print. Focusing on print allowed me to add more detail to my zine which made me feel like my products were a better quality rather than quantity. Although I was unsure at first, my project development was necessary in order for me to create my final package.
  • 19. How did you feel when the project was completed and why? When the project was completed, I felt accomplished but also nervous as it is my last project and final grade. Because I decided to focus mainly on print, I knew how to make the products but hoped that my planning and production diary presented this process effectively. I was happy with my final products and felt that I had made enough visual products to present a tour concept to an artist as I had created a poster, alternate album cover, zine and merch. It is a promotional package that includes all the necessary branding.
  • 20. Evaluating the project In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment. An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of the success of the project
  • 21. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible] • A positive point about this project is that I was able to further develop my skills in Photoshop and use tools that I haven't had any experience is. Using 3D tools for the eye effect was a good learning experience and I felt accomplished with the final result after having no prior experience and think it fit well on the album cover design. • I was able to be creatively expressive with this project and had the freedom to choose a topic that interested me. I was able to use my strengths in media and using Photoshop to create products for a tour that I am happy with and had the freedom to make it look bold and unique whilst also ensuring it was consistent with my chosen artists' aesthetic. • Working on this project has helped me learn and start to explore a sector of media within the music industry. Previously, I had little knowledge on the media side incorporated for projects such as a tour and how wide of a scale it can be with products that can be made. My research into different artists' tours and posters helped educate me. Also, looking at graphic designers such as Aries Moross or Silent House for visuals was inspiring for me and what I wanted to make within my project.
  • 22. What challenges did you face and how did you respond to them? Try and think of at least 3... • One challenge I faced at the beginning of production was issues with After Effects. Since I had originally planned to make animated visuals, I started the week off by working on the introduction visual at the time since I was also struggling with inspiration at the time. Whilst I was able to create the animations, I had issues where After Effects would close and I would lose my previous work even after saving. This is an issue I had faced before using this software and ended up having to go back to it. So, instead I saved what I had made and moved onto the print based products in the meantime. • As it was my first experience using 3D tools in Photoshop, I didn't realize how powerful it was and how it would slow down the software and my computer whilst in use. When I was trying to make the 3D eye, if I had to go back and resolve any issues it would cause the whole application to freeze up and I couldn't select anything, even after restarting the software. To resolve this, I made everything else in the image at college, and then went home on my own PC and made the eyes and added them at the end to finish it off. • A challenge I faced was due to my lack of time management skills and planning. For everything I planned to make, I underestimated how long it would take and if it would be realistic to make at a high quality within the given time frame. Therefore, I was unable to make the visuals I had planned to make alongside the print products, and my zine was more time consuming and ended up taking longer than expected. In response to this, I decided the best thing to do was work towards my strengths in Photoshop and focus on making the print products I had planned and ensured they were at a high quality, rather than rushing through and not working to my best abilities.
  • 23. What were the negative points about the experience, and what could you have done to improve them? • A negative point of this experience is that I struggled with time management and organization a lot more in comparison to my previous projects this year as it is a much larger project and required more products made and detail in planning. Because of this struggle, I ended up not making the amount that I had hoped to. Originally, I had planned to make several concert visuals, tour poster and tickets, album cover and alternate music posters, and a variation of merchandise which included a mini zine. I didn't have time to create the visuals, or a variety of music posters but I still finished with majority of the print products I had planned. To improve, next time I would be more detailed with my schedule and make sure I can realistic create everything within the set time frame that would still be at a high quality. • During the research stage, we had to complete different areas such as subject, audience, production method, and existing product research. Out of these four, I struggled with my audience research. I knew that my target audience was 18-25 and also fans of The Weeknd, but I struggled finding a range of statistics for this age group, as well as with music that I have written about. I also struggled with the audience research aspect in my previous 'The Grid' project which lacked detail on our audience. To improve next time, it may be helpful for me to make surveys for those in this age range to complete, or even interview fans of The Weeknd to help add more in depth research into my target audience and develop a better understanding of what they would be looking for in tour promotional products.
  • 24. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating] In my opinion, I would rate my final piece a satisfactory, or possibly good with some of the products. This is because overall I have managed to create what I had planned to- a tour concept with promotional products. It would probably rate higher if I had managed my time better to make more products or merch within the time frame to bulk up the project and amount of products, but I am happy with the products that I am finishing the project with. With my products, I have created multiple pieces of work at a high level that demonstrate a variety of skills I have developed in Photoshop. For my album cover I worked with 3D tools for the first time. I also used different adjustment layers and tools that I haven’t previously such as gradient maps, or the different blur settings to edit existing photos into my own work. I’ve created a magazine, along with the tour promotional products that also helps present the artist and promote their tour, as well as their previous work.
  • 25. How well did your project apply the characteristics and conventions of the medium you worked in? How did it appeal to your target audience? I think my project as a whole applied the characteristics and conventions of my area quite well. I have created a tour concept with promotional products. Within tour promotion for other artists, you will mainly see a tour poster, tickets, and merchandise. Also, sometimes visuals which is the only part I am lacking in my own project. I have also included extra aspects as I have also made an alternate album cover and a zine about the artist which isn't always included as part of a tour package, so I was successful in applying the conventions for the tour as a whole. As shown in existing products and content for the After Hours album, its color scheme is quite dark with deep reds, greens, and golds. It is meant to hint at the audience about his character taking a dark path and trying to get through, there is also callbacks to old horror movies which is referenced from music videos to even how the character looks throughout this album era. With my projects I remained consistent to the color scheme and haunting feel of existing work for After Hours. I remade my own version of the After Hours logo and alternated it for tour poster/ticket design and made sure that my designs were shocking and eye catching similarly to existing work so it would fit well within The Weeknd's branding and also appeal to his target audience that enjoy and encourage his existing work. The overall look and feel of the products appeals to my target audience. This album and its existing products has already received critical acclaim and is thoroughly enjoyed by fans. Remaining consistent to the existing theme appeals to my audience and The Weeknd fans, they would also enjoy the horror aspect incorporated into it as it is familiar to his music and helps keeps a consistent theme with that also. The designs are shocking, eye catching, and interesting to look at and would attract a younger audience or fans of his music rather than an older audience who might not enjoy some of the glitch effects or horror style within the album cover. Logo remake: The Weeknd's Logo:
  • 26. Analysis In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how your decisions informed the project development and the success of the outcome.
  • 27. In what ways was the overall project a success? The overall project was successful because I was able to complete a tour concept of print products that demonstrate my technical skills and creativity. Although I had to use existing photos of the artist I chose, I was able to transform them into my own original thing. I did this using tools in Photoshop to create half exposure effects, halftone print, gradient overlays, motion blurs and also glitch effects for images and texts to create unique pieces of work that are colorful and eye-catching whilst also matching the themes of The Weeknd's existing work without directly re-using it.
  • 28. What elements did not go well and why? With my magazine double pages, I think that I could have improved the Trilogy double page. This is because I feel like on the right side, the articles are difficult to read in front of the background. With this being one of the first pages, it could deter my audience and they might stop reading if they assume each page is as difficult to read as this one. To improve it next time I would go back and change the font to a different color to be more readable. I wouldn't want to adjust the text/photo layout if possible as I liked the layout I originally have for it. On my tour poster, I also feel like the text of the tour dates at the bottom half of the page is quite dark and could be quite hard to read in different lighting, I didn’t notice this as much until I have finished the project. This would deter the audience as they may be unable to see what tour date and what cities The Weeknd is visiting which would lower ticket sales. Next time, I would go back and fix this and use a lighter red shade that stands out amongst the also dark background so that the dates can definitely be readable no matter what location or lighting it is shown in.
  • 29. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember, skills aren't just technical, remember things like organization, time management, communication, etc. as well] Starting out with the research and planning stage, I was able to develop my organization skills. This is because, we followed a schedule each week with what part of pre-production we had to focus on, and a set number of days. This enabled me to stay organized and understand what stage I should be at throughout the project. I also had to demonstrate time management skills to help keep to this schedule. When I got to the production stage I was able to demonstrate more technical skills as I used Photoshop to create all the products in my project. I combined a variety of skills using different tool such as 3D tools, camera raw filter and other filters, and adjustment layers/gradient maps to create the desired effects that are presented throughout my products. It was very important that I do a lot to edit these photos in production as they were not my photos taken and are existing photos of The Weeknd. This meant that I had to adjust the photos and add different effects to remake the photos to be as unique to me and my own work as possible.
  • 30. What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful? Whilst carrying out research for this project and looking into the After Hours era. I was fascinated by the movie references throughout the music videos, specifically the horror aspect and even the font being inspired by The Exorcism. This led me to be inspired to want to more blatantly incorporate those themes within my print products compared to his existing products which don't fully demonstrate this side of the storyline within this album. I also found that within the music videos and telling the story, especially with the 'Heartless' and 'Blinding Lights' music videos, there are scenes that are trippy where the camera and music warps which inspired me to create the glitchy text effects on the tour poster and tickets. Overall, I wanted to present to the audience more detail of the storyline. I wanted them to look at the album cover, and the tour poster and see that it isn't just another album by The Weeknd, but there is more of a storyline within this and all is not as it seems. I feel like I was successful in conveying this message, OI think my products intrigue the audience and make them want to listen to the album or go to the tour to find out what's happening with the After Hours world and learn of the story that The Weeknd is trying to tell his listeners.
  • 31. What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings? "I loved the album cover and the awesome graphics at the back of the jacket! And the magazine is good, the cover made me interested to read it. How his life influenced his music from partying to obviously love.. it's a good read. Overall, you've excelled, and I would want to go and see this tour in person." "I really like the fisheye effect you did on the poster, it's really creative. The magazine is well detailed. Everything blends together and works well as a whole. The only thing I would change is that I would change the text on the Trilogy part, one part is white, and the rest is black so I would make sure it matches."
  • 32. What would you do differently in the future and why? If I could do this project differently in the future, I would like to have my key focus be on visuals and working in After Effects rather than the print products. This is because, whilst researching about existing products and tour promotion I had developed an interest into the visuals side. Silent House has a team that focus on stage design, visuals, sound, etc. And I would like to learn more in that area and develop my skills as something new in comparison to print which I am already familiar in. With planning, I would add more detail into my schedule and make sure I consistently stick to it, so I am able to complete all the products I intended to make at high quality and within the deadline. For the design aspect, I would like to lean even more into that horror aspect within my products like I did with the album cover. For example, with my tour poster I created a trippy and glitchy fisheye style effect, and next time I could make something that looks scarier and more shocking, similarly to the album cover.
  • 33. Action Plan This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and identify ways you could develop.
  • 34. If you were making a similar project in the future, what would you do differently? If I were to make a similar project in the future, I would firstly make sure I was more organized and had better time management skills. Although I am happy submitting my final work, I was unable to make everything I aspired to for this project due to poor time management. To make this happen, I would start by making sure I knew exactly what products I will be making and how I want them to look before getting too far into planning and production. I will do more experiments beforehand that are relevant and similar to my planned product to make sure I knew how to make the product efficiently. This would allow me to be more organized in future projects and possibly give me extra time at the end of production to expand my project. I would also have liked to have made the After Effects animation and possibly a stage design, so I would plan time to make those in the beginning and make sure I have timeline of what I would like to make for it in advance.
  • 35. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example, webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications. To develop my skills for future projects, I would like to advance my knowledge and skills in After Effects to allow me to make the visuals for the tour concept at a high quality. The best way for me to learn this is to watch YouTube tutorials and try to recreate them, this is the also the most efficient way I have learned to use Photoshop. Max Novak is an example of whose tutorials are helpful and I have followed previously to learn the basic tools of this software. I could also further my skills in 3D design in Photoshop as I had experimented with 3D tools to create the eyes for my album cover. 'Learn From Fred' does lots of tutorials for experimental art in Photoshop and incorporates 3D tools.
  • 36. What personal attributes could you develop to ensure you are working at a professional level? To ensure I am working at a professional level, I would need to develop my organizational skills. In industry, I might not be able to change my project around or adjust different aspects throughout production like I did by deciding to focus on print instead of visuals. This means that I will have to make sure to correctly plan ahead for exactly what products to make beforehand and how I am going to make them. This would also have to be a solid decision as in industry when communicating with clients you would both need to know what products are being made. I would also need to improve on my time management skills to ensure that I can work to a set deadline and also make all the products I plan to at a high quality and within the time frame.
