For their FMP, the student plans to create promotional material and visuals for an artist going on tour. They were inspired by graphic designers Aries Moross and Henock Sileshi, who create eye-catching and colorful designs for albums, tours, and merchandise. The student wants to demonstrate their skills in Photoshop and After Effects while developing a concept similar to their previous projects in film and magazine design. They will brainstorm which artist and album to base the concept on and create visuals, posters, merchandise, and tickets with consistent colors, text, and layout to match the original album aesthetic.
1. Contextual Statement
For my FMP, I am planningtocreate promotional material andvisuals foranartistgoingon tour.
I was inspired andinfluenced tochoose thisasmytopic whilstresearchingothergraphicdesigners
for mycontextual research.
Specificdesigners thatinspired me wasAriesMoross andHenock Sileshi. Moross throughouttheir
careerhas worked witha variety of artistsandcompanies tocreate products. At the start of their
career, they formeda recordlabel withthe intention of combiningmusicanddesign. They also
createdthe tour visualsforartistssuchas One Direction, Spice Girls, alongwithpromotional
material forfestivals like Parklife. Theirdesignstyle issimilartothe style thatI enjoy. Withlotsof
boldand colourful typography andcontrastingcolours, theirwork iseye catchingandrecognisable
amongstotherartists. Sileshi wasthe creative directorforthe groupBROCKHAMPTON, inwhichhe
createdalbum/ single covers, merchandise, assistedwithconcertvisuals, etc.These have beena
maininspiration inme wantingtodographic design overallasitsparked myinterestindesignwithin
the musicindustry alongwiththeirdesignstyles.
I wantedtodo thisconceptfor thisprojectbecause Ialready have an interestinthe musicindustry
and enjoy lookingintoall the visuals made anddesign process thatgoesintoartistsandtheir
brandingas well asthe workthat goesintoeach albumrelease besides makingthe music. As
previously stated, Iwasmostly inspired forthisideabyAries MorosswhoI discovered during
contextual research. Ialsothinkthiswould be anew conceptto express mycreativity inand
demonstrate myskillsinPhotoshopaswell asfurtherdevelop theminAfterEffectswhilstcreating
the visuals. Lastyearfor my FMP, I createda filmconceptanddesigned the promotional material for
that, thisprojectissimilarexceptitwillbe fora tour conceptandis musicbasedinstead. Also, for
my fanzine projectthisyear, Ibasedmine around the musicindustry andthe impactsithas on
artists. Thismeansthat I will have some experience intermsof research forthe musicindustry. And
as I wouldalsolike toincorporate amini zine aspart of the tour merchandise, Iwill have previous
experience frommakingamagazine earlierthisyear.
I am still brainstormingoptions astowhatartist and albumtobase my conceptoff. However, similar
to the designers Iresearched, Iwouldliketohave mytour withlotsof colourful visuals andposters
withtypography thatis eye catching. Iwould like all the products andmerchandise toappeal tothe
age group18-24, but alsoto the artistsfanbase so I will be creatingworkthatwill be entertaining
and eye catchingbutalso feel immersive forthe vieweranddrawsthemin. I will be creatingvarious
visualstogo withdifferentsongswhich will change tocoincide withthe songlyrics orthe beat. I am
alsoplanningoncreatingan alternate albumandvinyl coverforthe tour, as well asa logo, posters,
merchandise andtickets. Thisconceptwillall be basedaround the albumthatI choose intermsof
colourschemes, text, layoutsothatthe aestheticremains consistentwiththeiroriginal albumcover
and musicvideos forthatrelease.
