Questionnaire
1. After discovering the favourite ‘Crime Drama’ films
of a sample of people there was a common film that
kept on occurring – The Dark Knight. This is possibly
due to the dark mysterious persona that Batman
has been given in the film, the Dark Knight Trilogy is
regarded as one of the best Batman series. Similarly
all the films that were chosen all involve a good plot
story that engages with the audience, films such as
’The GodFather’ and ‘Scarface’ are two of the films
regarded as being the best Crime Gangster films
ever. Comedy also seems to be a sub-genre
common in more modern films such as ’Bad Boys II’
or ‘Suicide Squad’. From this I can now tell the
overall expectations of people from a ’Crime Drama’
film, and I also have some films to model my trailer
around to maximise effectiveness.
2. As I had imagined the general
feeling around a ‘Crime Drama’
film is that the audience wants a
good quality plot/story line. Over
60% believe that the plot/story is
the most interesting aspect of the
genre and not the violence as that
would be more catered to an
action film. This means that I will
have to take some time to
brainstorm an interesting and
unique plot that no one has
thought of. This will make the story
more interesting, and the
characters I make will have to play
key parts individually.
3. In terms of advertisement at least 40%
of my research shows that Trailers are
the most effective way of convincing
an audience to watch a film. This
means that I will have to out extra
focus into my trailer to ensure that it
captures my audience’s attention - this
will only happen through multiple
drafts. The second most effective
method would be a TV advert which
we can assume would be linked to my
trailer, however the Poster seems to
be a more popular choice over a
website. This could be due to the fact
that a website is something users have
to find and search whereas a poster or
trailer is something that searches
them.
4. The top three most popular choices
are a ‘Heist’, ‘London Gang’ or a
’Social Realism’ film. In a way all three
can be seamlessly added together to
make up my film, that way it will be
most effective and will satisfy a wider
range of audience rather than just
choosing a specific type of ‘Crime
Drama’. The other choices were not
as popular, maybe due to the general
target audience of a the genre, it is
aimed at 15-24 year olds which more
often than not are not interested in
the other types.
5. The majority of the survey suggests that
the best suited setting for my genre is in
an Urban area, followed by a Major City
and then a ‘Poor Area’. This now gives
me a good perspective on what type of
locations I should be going to to
research and see whether I can shoot a
scene in them. Location scouting will be
a key element to the success of my
trailer because it will help to
authenticate my story line and will add
any dramatic effect needed.
Furthermore, I can now begin to figure
out what kind of stories are usually
involved in locations such as those.
6. Guns and Violence seem to be the most
iconic aspect of any ‘Crime Drama’ film
and for the most part a lot of other
genres such as; Action. Guns and
Violence also seem to tie in with
‘Crime’ a lot due to the films being
about criminal activities and so on. Cars
and police involvement were also some
popular choices which plays on the
binary opposite of ‘Good vs Bad’ which
makes sense for Police involvement. I
am surprised that drugs were not a
popular choice so I will have to take
that into consideration when planning
my script treatment as well as my
story/plot.
7. 12A is usually the best age rating for
films that want to make major
commercial success as it allows the
film company to target younger
children and being suitable for older
aged people. The majority of results
show that my film should be rated a
15, and this makes sense as it will
allow a more realistic view of what
would happen in my ‘Crime Drama’
film. It also allows me to see which
boundaries I am allowed to cross and
which ones will cause my film to be
rated an 18. Furthermore, I now
know that I do not have to be as
worried about offending families or
children as the film will be allowed to
be partially explicit.
8. In general these are the the options
ranked in order from most important
to least important. As you can see
once again the plot/story is most
important to the viewers followed by
the characters and their
development. This could be due to it
being under a ‘Drama’ genre, having
good characters will add to the
dramatic atmosphere. This allows
me to focus on the most valuable
parts of my trailer and what will
satisfy my target audience –
furthermore it also shows me what I
least need to worry about when
filming, or editing ( such as car
chases or cliff hangers ).
9. This is what people feel like are the most
important aspects of a trailer and what definitely
need to be included. In particular people would
like to get a taste of what the film will be about
to capture their imagination, however I feel that
a lot of trailers these days reveal too much
information and therefore spoil the film – so I
will have to find a balance between entertaining
my audience and captivating them as well as
hiding any real important information. My target
audience also wants to be introduced into the
main characters and possibly a key scene they
are involved in to show how important they are
towards the film. I will have to make sure I plan
this in my story board to ensure that I have shots
of all the main characters.
10. This is one of the most important questions
answered because it shows that despite
even the plot/story being incredible the
overall acting will be what the audience will
base their judgement on whether they will
watch the film or not. This is vital
information as I will now have to attempt to
find good actors to help sell my film in the
best possible way. If my actors are sub-par
then my trailer will not be effective and will
eventually put people off from watching my
film. I will most likely have to end up type
casting to make sure that the characters
feel original and effective.
