2. Narrative Location 1
I don’t know how good I'll be able to set up the
shot while thinking about composition and framing,
the wall could act as a great leading line directing
the focus straight to the actor, I could also set up
the camera at a slightly high or low angle to add
some interesting features to the shot. The last
thing I'll probably do is use the rule of thirds and
keep the actor in either the left or right third.
The alleyway location is ideal for the narrative shots in which the
‘lonely girl’ is against the wall looking at the picture. As I really like
the idea of the girl being alone in her scenery for those shots as to
empathise the lonely girl aspect and as this location is fairly quiet
and not many walk this way should help with this.
The lighting at this location isn’t very great in the
dark with the one street light although this could
look really good I think any shot’s taken after dark
would suffer due to the bad lighting so it would be
best to film in the day time.
The natural lighting when these photographs
were taken makes it sort of look darker and more
depressive which may look quite good in the
music video.
3. Performance Location 1
The composition and framing for this shot will
be a bit trickier although you can get a decent
depth of field and if you position it right you
may be able to get a nice leading line by the
railings this shot may have to be made more
exciting by using the rule of thirds again
positioning the performer slightly to the left to
make it look more appeasing.
The idea of doing a performance shoot on the roof was
inspired by several music video such as Rooftops by Lost
prophets and The Edge by Tonight Alive which utilise this and
it gives a different depth of field from if it was a shot taken on
the ground, I chose this location as it’s close, easy to get to
and the rusted iron railings really sort of fit in with the genre.
The lighting in this location will have to rely on
natural lighting but again if it is timed when it is
overcast it gives that more dark and depressive
feel which may look quite good in the music video.
Something I'll have to be careful with filming in this
location is as it’s a car park there will be cars
although this top level is usually fairly quiet I still
have to be on the lookout, so I have to be quick
and careful when taking these shots.
4. Performance Location 2
The idea of using this location is that I can use spot lights to control
the lighting here and the gates can be opened to allow for a better
shot or to position things easier.
The idea from this location came from certain music videos that use a
house or garden setting this seemed like a good idea as you can
position the camera to not look like a house but another alleyway or
something like that. I also like using the metal container to sit on for
the performance shots as I think it might look quite cool although I
would probably move it against the other wall.
As I've said before the lighting in this location can be changed by use
of a spotlight which means there is a possibility of filming at night or
nearing sunset .
The composition and framing in this shot may be quite difficult
although the wall as a background will make the performer the main
focus of the shot and by utilising the rule of thirds and by using
different shots will help make this shot look better.
5. Narrative Location Other Ideas
The next narrative locations I thought about were doing some shots at a school
especially the whispering in the ear scene or just use the back garden of the location
of the second performance shot.
I will definitely need to think this shot and the argument shot out although the
argument shot may be good to have in the alleyway to show that it meant something
to the girl.
Another location was thinking of was using a bed room for the other girl when she
drops the picture because I think it would look quite good having pictures of her and
the friend on the wall and she’s taking them down and throwing them away as I could
use a lot of editing techniques like jump cuts and could speed it up and I think this
would look really good.
I really want to use an indoor location to be able to utilise the lighting and it is easier to
set a mise en scene inside as you can move things around or put things into the shot
to aid with the understanding of the narrative .
6. Inspirations
A lot of music videos in this genre have either the artist or narrative either lent
against a wall or in front of the wall which is where I took inspiration from this
location.
The use of the rooftop scene is seen in a variety of different videos across this
genre.
The use of a school location is seen in at least one music video from most of the
artists in this genre.
The use of a house or garden setting is less seen in this genre and is usually
taken in daylight and used usually in lighter songs of this genre.
The location of an alleyway or empty street is also often found in this genre and
are usually seen at night or sunset though I may have to be a bit
unconventional in mine due to lighting issues.
The use of a green screen or just plain white screen is often found in this
genre so if I run out of idea or it doesn't look right I can always utilise the use
of a green screen or white fabric background.
