Location checklist
1. Location Recce Checklist Location?
College Grass Area
Location?
Front Door and Stairs
of Castlefield
Location?
Studio 2 (Bedroom)
Location?
Areas around Reigate
for title sequence
Is it suitable for the scene?
Enough space? Important mise en
scene/points of interest? Take
some test shots.
This area is suitable for
the scene as is a big
spacious area and it
gives the audience a
false idea of that the
drama might be about.
It gives off an
impression that it is a
positive storyline
because the girls will be
walking on the grass
towards Castlefield all
happy, when in reality,
the idea of a wooded
grassy area, portrays
my main characters
isolation and how her
house is in the middle
of nowhere.
This is suitable for the
scene as I want to
create a homely
atmosphere and give
off to the audience that
it is a real house, and
not just studios. The
front door and stairs
are an important part in
my key dramatic scene,
as it is where my main
characters last
moments are filmed.
However, it can be a
small area to film in, so
all health and safety
checks must be covered
to make sure there is
enough space to film.
This is a suitable place
to film the scene
because it creates a
sense of reality to the
audience. I can also use
the props element of
mise en scene to
represent my main
characters age and how
she expresses her
personality.
This is suitable for my
opening title sequence as
it creates a montage
effect of different areas
around Reigate that can
portray what the genre is
of the TV drama, for
example, the old
billboard near the train
station, and also use
different shot types and
incorporate ideas of
montage openings from
other existing series’.
What shots would be available?
E.g. XLS/Long shots possible or
just tighter framed shots? Take
some test shots.
Any type of shot can be
used in filming,
however, in this
particular space, long
shots may be
beneficial. Natural light
be may enough to
illuminate the
Mainly close up and
mid shots as it is a small
area to film in. Lights
may be required if
natural isn’t enough.
Any type of shot can be
used in this location;
however, I intend to
use mainly close ups to
highlight key points in
the bedroom scene.
Any type of shot can be
used; this would be nice
to incorporate, to show
the knowledge of
different camerawork
techniques.
2. characters and make it
clear what is
happening.
Access – do you need permission
to film here? Who from?
No permission is
required, area needs to
be free and cleared for
my use.
Area needs to be
cleared and free for my
use,
Studio 2 booked with
Jude.
No permission is
required; however,
certain shots should be
checked before filming in
case of any mishaps.
Light – how much natural light is
there? What direction from? On a
sunny day/cloudy day? Is
additional light needed?
In this location, there
should be plenty of
natural lighting to show
the audience that it is
daytime. If the lighting
isn’t enough, then
artificial lighting may
need to be used, as
well as considering the
health and safety risk of
this.
Lighting may be enough
to fil these scenes,
however, to illuminate
the area and make it
look like a home, I may
have to use artificial
lights.
Artificial lighting may be
required in the
bedroom if there isn’t
enough natural lighting
due to the weather.
Lamps or studio soft
box light could be used
in areas of the room
that the camera won’t
pick up on.
For the title sequence
montage of clips, lighting
isn’t an issue. If the
weather is dull and
gloomy, then it may
work in my favour as it
helps create the genre I
want my TV drama to be,
and to also tell the
audience what to expect.
Dull shots with the right
music will make the
perfect introduction.
Will weather affect this location?
Back up location?
If the weather was bad
whilst filming this
scene, it may work to
help set the tone and
mood of the drama, but
will also get my actors
wet and their makeup
and costumes ruined
too, as well as the
As the location is inside
and the front door is
covered, weather isn’t
an effect to stop me
from filming. Lighting
may be an issue but can
be worked on.
The bedroom won’t be
affected by the weather
as it is inside and I have
a booked slot for this.
Lighting may also need
to be worked on if the
weather isn’t great.
The rainy weather will
work for these series of
shots, as mentioned
above, it will set the tone
of my drama.
3. equipment. If this is the
case, I may have to use
a tunnel, like the one in
Reigate and try to cut
the scenes as perfectly
as I can.
Noise – what sounds can you
hear? Will these interfere with
filming (e.g. sound from people,
traffic, electrical appliances, etc.)
Hopefully sound from
people won’t be an
issue as it will be filmed
whilst other students
are in lesson. However,
any other diegetic noise
is great as it sets the
reality for my drama.
Sound may be an issue
here as other Media
students will be using
Castlefield for the their
scenes, I may need to
discuss this with the
other students to make
sure no other noises
can be picked up whilst
filming in this area.
Sound may also be an
issuein Studio 2 as well,
as there are other
studios next door that
people may be using,
and other student’s
dialogue may be heard.
This may be avoided
but may need to be
discussed.
Sounds won’t be an issue
during these shots as I
will mute them anyway. I
will be overlapping the
right music to the shots
anyway.
Are there times of day it is
best/worst? (e.g. in terms of
access, light, sound, disturbance)
The best times to use
this area are during
lesson times as
students won’t be
there to hear or to get
in the way of filming.
Access may be an issue
if filmed during break
times, as students tend
to sit in this grass. Light
id dependent on the
weather. The best time
to film is midday when
the sun is at a peak.
The best times to use
this area is when other
Media students are in
their studios and won’t
be in the way of my
filming. Using this area
when people are trying
to get in and out with
equipment may be a
struggle.
This studio is the best
place to film as there
isn’t any physical
disturbance, however,
sound may be an issue,
as mentioned above.
The worst time of the
day to film is when
schools finish as I may
need to be careful where
I film without
permission. During
school hours is ideal to
film my montage shots;
not at bust peak times.
4. Safety issues? This grass area may be
slippery depending on
the weather.
The door step may be
slippery, depending on
the weather
Wires may be a tripping
hazard; this will need to
be avoided by doing
final checks when the
actors are due for their
scene.
No safety issues.
