The document discusses potential locations for filming scenes for a media project, including a bowling alley, recording studio, pub exterior and interior, and a living room. The bowling alley would be used to film two protagonists playing bowling with neon lights. A recording studio would portray a band performing. The pub exterior would be an establishing shot and the interior would show characters drinking and playing pool. Finally, the living room would show an antagonist being abused to portray escaping home life. Advantages and disadvantages of each location are considered.
2. Bowling alley
My chosen location is a bowling alley in Halifax town. At this location,
protagonist 1 and protagonist 3 will be play a game of bowling. I will record
during the night because when it is dark outside the staff members at the
bowling alley turn off the house lights and turn on the neon lights, which
light up in different colours and create a very vibrant atmosphere compared
to when the house lights are on. The advantages of using this location are
that bowling alleys were popular areas for young adults and teenagers to
socialise even in the 80’s, which is when the song I have chosen was
released. The bowling alley is also easily accessible as there is a local one
just under 15 minutes away from where I live. Issues raised whilst using this
location may include the staff not allowing me to film within the location,
though I find this unlikely. Furthermore a camera angle I have in mind is one
which finds the camera laying on the aisle in which the bowling balls are
thrown on, which would mean I will have to walk onto the bowling aisle
which I am certain the staff will not allow me to do. This could possibly lead
to me being removed from the building, and so I was record this shot last to
avoid disappointment of not filming everything else I needed from the
location. Bowling Alley’s were also a popular location for teenagers to
gather in the 80’s, the time in which my chosen song was released.
3. Studio
I have chosen the location of a studio for the actors portraying the band ‘The
Smiths’ to perform in. Within this location the band will portray the
performance of the song ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ by The Smiths.
Recording in day or night is irrelevant because I will be using artificial lighting
to manipulate shadows and spotlights onto the actors. The advantages of using
this location include its easy accessibility given it is provided within the school,
also being a photography student as well as a media student allows me to book
the studio without any resistance from teachers, the studio is also free of
charge to use. Issues raised may include being interrupted by people walking in
and out of the studio to collect items from the art cupboards within the studio,
I will over come this by locking the door and placing a ‘do not disturb’ sign on
the door. The studio is useful to allow the focus to be entirely on the actors
rather than being distracted by something in the background. The band will play
together in this location to appear which will create a better effect than the
actors playing separately because this is more realistic to the audience.
4. George III (Pub) – External
The location of a pub in Queensbury, is where the protagonists 1&3 will be
seen drinking and playing pool. The external shot of the pub’s only purpose
is to act as an establishing shot and so the characters will only be seen
walking in. I will record just as the sun begins to go down. This will give the
impression that the actors are going out just before late afternoon there
will then be another shot of the protagonists leaving the location at night
time to imply they have been in the pub for a rather long time. I could do
this by recording a time lapse of the sun going down with the pub in the
centre of the frame. The advantage of using this location is that it is easily
accessible being a 5 minute walk from my house. As well as this, the staff
of the pub will not have an issue with me recording the pub because I won’t
tell them that I am doing it. The location links to my song as the lyrics state
‘take me out tonight, because I want to see people and I want to see life’,
pubs being a lively and social atmosphere that matches the lyrics and their.
5. George III (Pub internal)
The location of a pub in Queensbury is where the
protagonists 1&3 will be seen drinking and playing
pool. The internal location of the pub will be used to
establish where the actors are with the first shot
featured in the pub being the characters playing pool.
This location will give the impression that the
characters feel comfortable and are having fun as the
lighting in the pub has a very warm and homely
feeling to it. The advantage of using this location is
that day/night time is irrelevant as the location is
inside, and so lighting will not be affected. The
disadvantage of using this location could be that the
landlord may have a problem with his pub being
filmed, however I am a regular at this pub and so I
feel the owner will feel comfortable in allowing me
to film at his pub.
6. Living room
The location of a living room is where antagonist 1 will
be seen being abused and dragged across the floor by
protagonist 2. I will record during the day to allow
natural light into the room so the scene I’m recording
is easily visible, however I will turn on the side lights to
imply that the events taking place are in the evening.
The advantages of using this location is that it is within
my own house and easily accessible. The only
disadvantage to using the living room is that I will have
to vacate my family long enough for me to film. This is
the only room to be used in the house because the
narrative is based on escaping from home life, so most
of the scenes take place away from houses.
