12 Angry Men
1. 12 Angry Men
12 angry men is about a young adult who is put on trial because he was accused of killing
his father the 12 jurors who are listening then had to decide together if the kid is guilty or not
guilty so they get taken into a room to discuss and decide whether he is guilty or not. and
one of the jurors is determined that the kid is not guilty and one of the jurors is determined
that the kid is guilty and explains his reason and tries to make everyone understand his
reasoning and slowly everyone starts to understand his reasoning and change their vote to
not guilty until everyone in the room starts to say not guilty but one of the judges refuses to
believe the kid is not guilty but eventually agreed the kid is not guilty.
In the original film (1957) they had more still shots not much movement focusing on one
thing but compared to the new film it had more camera movement there was tracking
(following behind a character) and for the old film when it was starting it showed the outside
of the building and went along the corridor to the courtroom and it only showed us one or two
shot of the kid on trial one of the shots was over the shoulder and the second was a close up
of the kid but in the new film it showed many more shots of the kid on trial it started on a
close up of the kid to see his emotion and how he was feeling about being put on trial
accused of murder .
In the original film as it progresses the camera angle gets lower and lower to make the room
look smaller and like the room is closing in on them it does this to make them look weaker
because it's really hot and they will be frustrated because of the hot weather so they will be
sweating and just want to vote if the kid is guilty or not to get it over and done with then get
2. on with their day you can see they slowly start to not be bothered also in the original film
they did lots of close up shots to different characters to show them thinking and their facial
expressions on their face
In the original film everyone was wearing suits trying to
look clean, smart and well dressed to have respect and
trying to look upper class like they are higher than
everyone else or because they did not want to look stupid
and to give everyone a good impression on themselves
however in the new film they wore whatever they wanted
it was more casual they were not
showing off they wore clothes they
were comfortable in and some wore
suits and the reason for this is society
had changed over that time of 40 years so they didn't really have to dress
up too much and impress the judge also they didn't have look like they are
in a higher class where everyone should look up to them and show them
respect. In the original film in their society they smoked a lot more
because they thought it was good for their throat and helps them also
helps their vocals but later found out it didn't instead gave them cancer so
in the old film you can see on the table that there are ashtrays along the
table but in the new film there are no ashtrays on the table only water and paper because
after 40 years society realised smoking is actually not good for you and can slowly start to
give you cancer so they started to smoke less because it was not healthy for their lungs.
In the original film they had a fan incase they start to feel hot but the fan did not work
because it was connected to the light switch so they have to turn the light on so the fan will
turn on it was also the same in the 1997 film the fan did not work when they turned it on
however in the new film instead using of a fan they used air conditioning it shows how things
changed over time and how they found air conditioning more convenient than a fan for them
In the original film there was not much aggression showed because society at that time did
not like very aggressive behaviour because they thought it was not right and that you should
not act like that and that you should just respect every person. They thought that being very
aggressive was very informal however in the new film they were more aggressive because
society changed and therefore you can see it was more aggressive the way they were
talking to one another.
In both versions of the film it started to rain which kind of gave it a moody setting making it
feel sad and miserable and made us like that and it also made us feel as we were there in
that room with them the way the rain was hitting against the window but with the rain hitting
against the window it frustrated us and made us feel agitated because we could not really
hear what the jurors were talking about it keeps the audience really listen closely to what
they are talking about and focus on the film
