1. ,,,,,,,12 Angry Men essay,,,,,,
12 Angry Men is a film about 12 Men discussing a crime case about an 18 years old Latino boy killing
his father. There are 12 men also known as jurors which decide if is it guilty?. As the film goes
forward they start voting if the boy is guilty or not which at the end they decide is not guilty. Each
juror represents a different person from society the different thoughts and beliefs. , , , , , , , , , , ,
There are two version of 12 angry men, a black and white version which was made on 1957 and a
colour version which was made on 1997. The two versions have similarities and differentials.
There are obvious similarities in the use of mise-en-scène between the 1957 version and the 1997,
because the room that they vote and discuss is exactly the same situated for example the bathroom
is on the same position and part of the room as well as the windows. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,, , ,
In both versions the weather is the same because is the hottest day of the year
with no air conditioner. The characters are sweating in both version and have
their clothes wet because they sweat. The characters are agitated because of
the weather and because they are trying to finish as quick as
possible to get out from there. They also both have high key
lighting which shows is not a scary movie. The characters in the
way they comport are pretty much similar just a few
changings. In the old and new film are talking about the knife
which the boy ‘’killed’’ his father and they also sit around a big
table with papers on it. In both versions, black and white and
colour films juror number 11 is an East European man.
There are also differences in the use of mise-en-scéne between
the 1957 version and the 1997 version because the society have change during
those 40 years, the costumes of the characters are different for example in the 1957
version all the jurors were wearing smart suit to show that they are gentlemen and they are high
class when in the 1997 version there was only the old man wearing a smart suit but the rest of them
were wearing casual clothes such as tracksuit, shirts and jeans etc. ,, , , , , , , , , , , , ,, , , , ,
The characters in the black and white, and colour film are different in the way they look because in
the new one they have black people or afro Americans and accept other races
when in the old one have only white people. The judge from the old film is a
Man when in the new film is Woman this is because in 1957 women didn’t have
rights and in 1997 women had rights. The Man is more
sever when the Woman is more calm and talking more
polite. The jurors as I said are similar in terms of how
they act but Juror 10# is complete different because in
the old film he was more polite and calmer when in the new one is
aggressive start shouting and doesn’t let people finish their point. He is also
white on the old one when in the new one is black and is Muslim.
2. There are similarities in the use of camerawork between the old film and new film such as the both
films use a lot of eye level therefore it makes you feel that you are there and watching and actually
talking with them. Is also use a lot of tracking in both versions to show that you are next to the
character and you are follow their movements.
They use a lot of close ups and extremely close up shots to show character’s facial expression either
they are think, are angry or confuse. They are also a lot of wide shot especially when the jurors are
sitting at the table to show the body language and expressions. Both films in camerawork have zoom
in and zoom out, it doesn’t seen a lot but they have.
There are also differences in the use of camerawork
between the old film and the new film such as in the old film is
starts from a high angle shot and as the film goes forward it in a
low angle shot. Also at the beginning of the new film it shows
the Boys face a lot of times with a close up and extremely close
up to show his facial expression and what is he feeling in that
moment when in the old one is shows the face only a few times
and when the jurors go to the room is an over the shoulder
shot. On the black and white film is using a crab shot to show
all the jurors and what they are thinking when in the colour film there is no
crab shot to show the jurors. In the new film when the jurors are in the room
there are a lot of tracking and crab shots in other words camera movements
when in the original film they use only still shots it doesn’t move.
The judge from the old movie is an eye level shot to show like you are in front of him when in the
new movie the judge is seen from a low angle shot to show that she has power. Also in the old film is
used over the shoulder shot which is over the judge shoulder to show that
you are next to the judge and you are seeing everyone and you are powerful
like him. On the old version they use more camera shot when in the new
version they use more camera movement such as
tracking shots, tilt shots. , , , ,, , ,
The style and tone of language used in the two versions includes various
differences in dialogue. For example in the old one the characters speak
more polite and like a gentlemen showing that they are high class when in the new film they talk so
aggressive and without respect, they also used swearing words. In the black and white film when the
jurors get in the room a background music comes therefore this shows they used non-diegetic sound
when in the colour films there is no non-diegetic. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,
There are also similarities on the use of diegetic sound for example they have similar scripts and they
talk pretty similar except juror 10 because he is more aggressive on the colour one then in the black
and white. When was raining the both versions, black and white and the colour film it sound the
same and at the same time.
