2. Diesel Power Plant In Textile Industry
Introduction:
Textile processing industry includes spinning, fabric, knit & garments manufacturing . In these
processing steps a high amount of energy is needed everyday i.e.; thermal energy required per meter
of cloth is 4,500-5,500 Kcal and electrical energy required per meter of cloth is 0.45-0.55 kWh. This
type of energy is usually fulfilled by conventional energy like fuel oil & natural gas that dispose
harmful pollutants into the environment & as a result depletes the ozone layer, creates greenhouse
effect & acid rain thus trends us to global warming. At the same time due to exhaustible sources of
conventional energy, the price is increasing, which does not indicate a good sign for making
profitability. The whole world would envisage a serious energy crisis after 2050 due to indiscriminate
use of coal & petroleum oil. Due to these restrictions of conventional energy, it is not familiar with
the economy of Bangladesh as a developing country. In the Global Economic Report of the World
Bank, WB says that the recent hike in the price of fuel oil will push up inflation in Bangladesh. So
we should come to the best alternative of conventional energy for keeping sustainability. All over the
world is deeply concerned about this matter & the reflection of their concern is the “Green energy
based third industrial revolution”. Especially our neighboring countries China & India are now
enormously using solar power, wind power, wind energy & they make the newest policy for
renewable energy based industrialization. I think Bangladesh as a textile industry based developing
country has greater extent of feasibility to exchange the energy system for developing industries as
environment friendly with highest economic.

System Of Diesel Power Plant:
1. Starting System
2. Lubrication System
3. Exhaust System
4. Air Intake System
5. Fuel System
6. Cooling System
1. Starting System:
The starting system conven is electrical energy from the bottenies into mechanical energy to turn the
engine over. A malfunction within the stanting system will make it difficult to get the endine running.
2. Lubrication System:
One purpose is to lubricate the bearing surfaces. The other purpose is to cool the bearing by absorbing
the friction generated heat. The flow of oil to the moving pants is accomplished by the engines internal
lubricating system. The oil galleries distribute the oil to all the beaning surface in the engine.
3. 3. Exhaust System:
A diesel exhaust systems main purpose is to take the used up fuel air mixture that a diesel engine uses
in its combustion Chamber and make sure that it is removed from the combustion Chamber via the
tailpipe.
4. Air Intake System:
In addition to cleaning the ain, the intake system is usually designed to intake fresh air from as far
away from the engine as practicable, usually just outside of the engines building or enclosure. This
provides the engine with a supply of ain that has not been heated by the engines own waste heat.
5. Fuel System:
The function of the diesel fuel system is to inject a precise amount of atomized and Pressurized fuel
into each engine cylinder at the proper time. combustion in a diesel engine occurs when this rush of
fuel is mixed with hot compressed air.
6. Cooling System:
The cooling system consists of a Closed loop similar to that of a can engine and contains the following
major components. water pump, radiator on heat exchanger, water Jacket and a thermostat.
Diesel Power Plant In Textile Industry:
Israg cotton mills limited is a ning spinning unit with 102,000 spindles. ICML is part of the Ahmed
Group, a leading name in the textile industry of Bangladesh. Ahmed Group started their journey in
1977 as a garment manufacturing with Lula fashion Ltd its umbrella namely, Isnag cotton mills, israg
spinning mills sajib fashion wear. Israg rotor spinning mills and israg textile mills. Clarke energy in
Bangladesh secured the contract with some to design, supply and render installation support prior to
carrying out commissioning activity of eight 1445k we natural gas gensets at the textile mill.
Following the initial orden for 3x jen bacher J420. Clarke energy secured the remaining orders based
on the augmentation plans of the company and also as part of the replacement Product . In addition
to the positive spank spread the Ahmed groups Philosophy to implement innovative technologies
helped them select jenbacher engines which are specifically developed for gas application. The
jenbacher J420 gas engine offer low fuel consumption, low oil consumption enhanced control system,
and higher efficiency and power output advantages.
The natural gas based captive power plant at ICML has resulted in cost savings, reduced Co2
emission, resiliency from grid disturbance and takes advantages of lower priced natural gas for
generating quality power required for the ring spinning unit.
Clarke energy. Significent experience, expertise project management skills and unmatched
commitment towards after sales service has led to the ahmed group installing six further jenbacheer
engines at two other textile plants operated by the group.
Industry Perspective:
They should also search and study the other source of energy. Also the most important thing is to
change the strategy of business, because this unlimitedly low cost fuel will not be feasible in future.
So they must take new technology. Global economic crisis and internal energy crisis will be the major
issue for the industries in near future. They should re-think about their business policy.
Diesel Cycle:
In a four stroke engine there are two possible cycles where the camshaft si geared to rotate at half of
speed of crankshaft with on event per stroke, in a two stroke cycle more events have to the timed per
stroke, 4 stroke diesel enginesare used in diesel electric facilities for a small loads, such as for
powering installations with personal computer Mini power plants and more recently small power
4. plants on the other hand two. Stroke diesel engine are used in diesel electric facitilities. since this
book is directed more specially to a small power plants the four stroke diesel engine is discussed next-
Working In Diesel Power Plant:
In a diesel power station diesel engine is used as the prime mover. The diesel burns inside the engine
and the products of this combustion act as the working fluid two produce mechanical energy .the
diesel engine drives alternator which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the
generation cost is considerable due to a high price of diesel, therefore, such power stations are only
used to produce small power.
Although steam power plants and hydroelectric plants are invariably used to generate bulk power at
cheaper cost yet diesel power stations are finding favour at places where the demand for power is
less, sufficient quantity of coal and water is not available and the transportation facilities are
inadequate these plants are also used as standby sets for continuity of supply to important points such
as hospitals, radio stations, cinema houses and telephone exchanges.
Advantages of Diesel Power Station:
1. The design and layout of the plant are quite simple.
2. It occupies less space as the number and size of the auxiliaries is small.
3. It can be located at any place.
4. The overall cost is much less than that of steam power station of the same capacity.
5. It requires less quantity of water for cooling.
6. It requires less operating staff.
7. It can be started quickly and can pick up load in a short time.
8. There are no standby losses,
9. The thermal efficiency of the plant is higher than that of a steam power station,
Disadvantages Of Diesel Power Station:
1. The plant has high running charges as the fuel (i.e., diesel) used is costly.
2. The plant can only generate small power.
3. The maintenance charges are generally high.
4. The plant does not work satisfactorily under overload conditions for a longer period.
5. The cost of lubrication is generally high.
Applications of Diesel Power Plant:
1. 1. The diesel oil is used as a fuel in power generation.
2. It produces AC as well as DC Voltages.
3. It is used where small power generation is a requirement.
4. In case of any emergency diesel engines are used.
5. It is also used for peal load during a small period of time.
6. It is used to restart the boilers.
7. It is used in remote places.
8. It can be used in areas having low load factor.
Why Solar for Textile?
Solar gives textile manufacturers control of one of the critical cost variables, power, and provides
them a long-term differentiation. While as a percentage of conversion cost spinning mills have a
higher percentage, dyeing and fabric units will also benefit from its adoption. The early adopters of
solar power who avail themselves of AD and REC bene ts currently available would have built a
long-term differentiator for their businesses and a winning proposition in the marketplace. The grid
power costs are expected to escalate at six per cent YoY, moreover accessibility of grid power is also
challenging, resulting in higher usage of diesel increasing overall energy costs. It is essential to have
energy security for the future and also minimize the current diesel consumption costs leading to faster
5. payback of the solar investment.
Energy Use In The Textile Industry:
The textile industry, in general, is not considered an energy intensive industry. However, the textile
industry comprises a large number of plants which all together consume a significant amount of
energy. The share of total manufacturing energy consumed by the textile industry in a particular
country depends upon the structure of the manufacturing sector in that country. For instance, the
textile industry accounts for about 4% of the final energy use in manufacturing in China while this
share is less than 2% in the US. The share of the total product cost expended on energy in the textile
industry also varies by country.
Power & Fuel:
Bangladesh is undergoing a severe energy crisis and more alarmingly it is looking for alternative
suitable sources for power generation but still to select or decide the right one when the country is
just about to finish its gas reserve in near future. According to Petrobangla almost 85 percent of the
power generation plant here is gas based which is quite unusual for any country. In Bangladesh most
of the industries especially the textile industries do not take power from the grid rather they produce
their own power by most cases gas generators. This power is called captive power. If we calculate
hypothetically we come with data that Bangladesh has a supply of captive power for at least 2700
MW.
Peak demand of Power is catered by:
Natural gas 85%
Liquid fuel 6.76%
Coal 5.41%
Hydropower 2.45%
Gas:
Bangladesh is not only suffering from a power generation crisis. It has a serious crisis of primary fuel
too. Government in a desperate situation tries load management. Urea fertilizer factories are kept shut
down to divert gas supply to power plants. Industries suffer from lack of quality gas supply all over
the gas franchise area. PDB blames Petrobangla for failure of required gas supply which restricts
power generation. The Natural Gas Value Chain of Bangladesh is in total mess with very little hope
of improvement over the next two remaining years of the present government term. Though
Petrobangla in a much hyped Media briefing talked of a high sounding success story of adding over
500MMCFD + new gas over the last three years yet the ground picture is very different. No new gas
field has been discovered over the period. There are very little success stories in exploration by IOCs
and BAPEX.
6. Coal:
• Country is believed to have 65 Tcf equivalents High Heating Value (A- grade), Low Ash
Bituminous Coal reserve in 5 discovered fields.
• Only 5.41 % of our power is being produced from coal, while we can make it at least 40%
with our existing coal reserve in a very time.
• Policies, acts and law stressed upon economic use of indigenous coal. Yet only we have only
one underperforming coal mine- A black elephant.
• Uncertain Situation of Gas supply and improper strategy to explore further petroleum
resources implies early exploration and exploitation of coal resources to extract maximum
with minimum impacts.
• Bangladesh is grappling unnecessarily with Coal policy despite having several approved
documents.
• Coal market is as volatile as oil. Market players like Japan, China, India have much higher
buying capacities.t
Positive Plan for Generating power should be (Targeting 2021):
Contingency Plants / Peaking Plant: The transportation facilities of rail and water are still not
sufficient enough to ensure supply of liquid fuel to all power plant developers in time. Government
must stop giving any new permission for liquid fuel based power plants. Government had to pay
billions of dollars already for liquid fuel imports. PDB had to pay through its nose the higher price of
power. Both PDB and BPC will be bankrupt if this trend continues over long term.
Coal Based Power Plant: Bangladesh must realize that if it fails to explore and start exploit its
own substantial coal resource urgently the black gold may remain underground forever. Government
must start mining coal by open pit method from Phulabri and remaining portion of Barapukuria within
this year and start construction of at least 1500-2000MW mine mouth power plants. By end of 2014,
much of the power crisis situation will be taken care of.
Gas Fired Power Plant: Natural gas use must be gradually restricted to industrial use only. Natural
gas for domestic and commercial use must be phased out. For this category of consumers LPG use
7. must be encouraged. No more Fertilizer plants should be set up until a major gas reserve is discovered.
Gas use for different categories may be restricted according to the following after 2020. Use of
Natural gas must be capped at 4000MMCFD.
Solar energy:
Solar energy technologies include solar heating, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal electricity & solar
architecture which can make considerable contribution to have a sustainable energy system. The main
input of the solar energy is the solar radiation. At earth surface solar radiation varies over the day &
the year. In Bangladesh monthly daily solar radiation is in the range from 4.0-4.5 kwh/m2/day.
Institute of renewable energy, University of Dhaka in association with the national Renewable Energy
Laboratory (NERL) in USA & DLR laboratories in Germany prepared solar radiation maps over BD.
Solar photovoltaic system: Photovoltaic systems (PV system) use solar panels to convert sunlight into
electricity. A system is made up of one or more photovoltaic (PV) panels, a DC/AC power converter
(also known as an inverter), a racking system that holds the solar panels, electrical interconnections,
and mounting for other components. Optionally it may include a maximum power point tracker
(MPPT), battery system and charger, solar tracker, energy management software, solar concentrators
or other equipment. A small PV system may provide energy to a single consumer, or to an isolated
device like a lamp or a weatherinstrument. Large grid-connected PV systems can provide the energy
needed by manycustomers. The electricity generated can be either stored, used directly
(island/standaloneplant), or fed into a large electricity grid powered by central generation plants (grid-
connected/grid-tied plant), or combined with one or many domestic electricity generators to feed into
a small grid (hybrid plant).Systems are generally designed in order to ensure the highest energy yield
for a given investment. Typical panel ratings range from less than 100 watts to over 400 watts. Costs
of production have been reduced in recent years for more widespread use through production and
technological advances. The average retail price of solar cells fell to $2.43/watt. For large-scale
installations, prices below $1.00/watt are nowcommon. Crystal silicon solar cells have largely been
replaced by less expensive multicrystalline silicon solar cells, and thin film silicon solar cells have
also been developedrecently at lower costs of production. Although they are reduced in energy
conversion efficiency from single crystalline "si wafers", they are also much easier to produce at
comparably lower costs.
Conclusion:
A Diesel Power Plant is wherein the prime mover of an alternator is a diesel engine. Using
a diesel engine has its own pros and cons. Installation and operation are easier as compared to
other power plants.
