3. Introduction
• A yarn in which two or more single yarns are
twisted together in a single operation, for
example two-fold, three-fold, four fold.
• Yarn ply is often used to describe how thick
or thin a yarn is which is not always
technically correct. For example, a 4 ply yarn
can be thicker than a yarn with 8 plies if the
single strands were thicker to start with.
5. Types of ply yarns
• Two-ply yarns are made by twisting two single yarns.
• Three-ply yarns are made by twisting three single
yarns.
• Four-ply yarns are made by twisting four single
yarns.
• By twisting two or more ply yarns we can produce
cord yarn which has high strength and by twisting
two or more cord yarns we would produce rope
yarn
6. Manufacturing
The method of yarn plying used by
manufacturers depends on whether
they want to produce a handspun,
machine-spun, or a special type of
yarn.
• Regular
• Chain or Navajo
• Machine
• Special
7. Different types of twist in
yarn ply
Z-TWIST
Aptly named, the fibers' angle in a Z-twisted yarn
resembles the letter Z because the manufacturers
spun them clockwise. The resulting Z-twisted yarn
is best for making left-handed twills.
S-TWIST
With the angles resembling the letter S, the fibers
or strands of S-twisted yarns were spun in a
counter-clockwise direction. They're the perfect
yarn for making right-handed twills

8. Properties of ply yarn
Plied yarns are not only more even
and of enhanced strength, they are
durable, flexible, and low twists may
be used to give a soft hand. Acrylic
and wool yarns are often plied for the
hand knitting market; this is because
of the soft hand that can be created.
