2. Location of heart
The heart is located in the thoracic cavity.
It is tilted towards the left side of the lungs.
The tip of the heart is called ‘Apex‘.
Weight of the heart is said to be about 300 gms
in males and 250 gms in females.
3. Structure of heart.
The human heart is a four-chambered muscular
organ, shaped and sized roughly like a man’s closed
fist.
It is divided into four chambers i.e. Two atrium and
two ventricles.
The heart is partitioned by Septum into left side and
right side.
4. Layers of heart.
Epicardium
1. Visceral layer of serous pericardium
2. Comprised of mesothelial cells and fat and connective tissues
Myocardium
1. Muscle layer
2. Comprised of cardiomyocytes
Endocardium
1. Lines inner surface of heart chambers and valves.
2. Comprised of a layer of endothelial cells, and a layer of
subendocardial connective tissue.
Pericardium
1. Protective covering.
5. Functions of heart.
Pumping oxygenated blood to the other body
parts.
Pumping hormones and other vital substances
to different parts of the body.
Receiving deoxygenated blood and carrying
metabolic waste products from the body and
pumping it to the lungs for oxygenation.
Maintaining blood pressure.
6. Cardiac cycle
The cardiac cycle is the performance of the
human heart from the ending of one heartbeat
to the beginning of the next. It consists of two
periods: one during which the heart muscle
relaxes and refills with blood, called diastole,
following a period of robust contraction and
pumping of blood, which is called as systole.
It lasts about 0.8 secs.
