Angioplasty , the minimally invasive procedure to fix heart diseases, is
growing in popularity , with nationwide statistics showing a 14% annual
increase in the number of cath lab procedures.If 2.16 lakh Indians
underwent a cath lab procedure in 2013, the number rose to 2.48 lakh
in 2014 according to data released by the Cardiological Society of
India's National Interventional Council (NIC) registry on Saturday . The
data is based on voluntary reporting from 396 cath labs across the
country .
The registry showed, among other trends, that though more Indians
were opting for primary angioplasty that is offered within six hours of a
heart attack, more died during the procedure in 2014.Fewer under-40
Indians underwent angioplasty , but more women needed it in 2014.Brought to you by

There has been a 40% rise in the number of deaths, during or immediately , after
primary angioplasty--from 0.89% in 2013 to 1.25% in 2014.“This could be because
of better reporting from the centres as well as an increase in the number of
centres,“ said NIC's Dr Praveen Chandra. Doctors said the increase in primary
angioplasty numbers is positive as it shows a good healthcare system. Stenting (the
process of putting a tiny scaffolding-like device in the blocked artery to keep blood
flowing) done within six hours of a heart attack is considered the best treatment.
“There has been a 68% increase in primary angioplasty . This means more patients
reached hospital within the stipulated time and could be helped,“ said Dr Chandra.
The figures jumped from 24,375 in 2013 to 41,057 in 2014.
Dr Ramakanta Panda, senior cardiac surgeon who heads Asian Heart Institute in
Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex, said, “The number of angioplasties will always be
higher than the number of bypass surgeries because stenting can be done for one,
two, three-vessel blockages.Surgery is only meant for complex lesions,“ he said.
Saying that the NIC data was encouraging, Dr Panda added, “There is clearly more
awareness about heart diseases and better transport system.“ Brought to you by

The NIC data has thrown up other interesting trends as well. Studies in the past have observed that
in the USA, around 32 out of 1,000 coronary heart disease patients get treated with angioplasty
whereas the corresponding figure in India is only around three in a 1,000.
The data also showed that half the patients pay for their angioplasties themselves, while insurance
companies barely covered a fifth of the total procedures. Governmentfunded procedures decreased
to 37.4% (2014) from 45.3% in 2013 .
Roughly 3.10 lakh stents were used for the 2.48 lakh procedures performed in 2014.“This works to
an average of around 1.2 stents per procedure. Thus people shouldn't be worried about over-
stenting in India,“ said an official.
Dr Chandra said most cath labs nowadays have a specialized device called FFR (fractional flow
reserve) that instantly tells the doctor whether the patient needs a stent or not. “There cannot be
two ways about the need for stenting anymore,“ he added.
“Even with the burden of cardiovascular diseases in India, NIC data clearly shows that 70% of the
cath labs reporting data perform less than two procedures per day ,“ said the NIC release.
