Anant Vora, a 15-year-old student with 90% muscular dystrophy disability, cleared his CBSE Class X exams with an 8.4 CGPA despite difficulties due to not receiving specialized care for his condition. While CBSE provides writers and extra time for disabled students, his father argues each disability needs individual consideration and assistance. An advocacy group agrees comprehensive policies are needed to address diverse needs of students with varying disabilities. Anant's parents support his education despite challenges as his condition makes even sitting a problem.

When it comes to facilities for differently abled students, a one-size-fits-all policy does not
work. That is the experience of parents and students who recently cleared the CBSE Class X
exams. Anant Vora, for instance, suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy . He is 90%
disabled and does not feel any sensation on any part below his neck. His spine is bent to
such a degree that he cannot sit upright without support. And yet the 15year-old was
treated as any other differently abled exami nee, getting the aid of a scribe to write his
answers and extra time to complete a paper.
Anant cleared the hurdle with a good CGPA of 8.4 from RB Ram Roop Vidya Mandir in
Sanjay Nagar, but the difficulties faced by him when sitting for the exam proved disability
should be categorised and special care provided based on such a classification.
“At the moment, a child with 40% disability and another with 90% disability get the same
treatment,“ explained Atul Vora, the teenager's father. “But in cases like Anant's, where the
child has difficulty in sitting upright and needs to be supported to sit properly , CBSE should
provide assistants who can do this. Each disability should similarly be considered differently
from another.“

CBSE has provisions for writers to aid disabled students and extra time is also al lowed to
them to finish the exam. “We try to ensure that the students don't face discomfort. We
also ask them if sitting on the ground is more convenient for them,“ said Rama Sharma,
CBSE spokesperson.
Javed Abidi, chairperson of Disabled People's International, agreed with the Vora family's
views. Abidi said there was a need for a comprehensive policy that considered the type of
disability of the student and provisions made for that student based on that.“Someone
suffering from cerebral palsy and someone suffering from muscular dystrophy have
different needs and each disability needs to be looked at separately ,“ he said.“A
comprehensive policy needs to be drafted to help such children.“
Anant's problem is so acute that his parents do not work in order to assist him at home and
school. The father earns what he can by working as a part-time tutor, while the mother,
Rita, is a housewife. Despite the obvious disadvantages, they encourage the boy to study.
“His medical condition means even sitting is a problem.However, he loves schoolwork and
we work hard for that one passion of his,“ said the mother.
