Project proposal title and date:
Exploring York 28/03/19
Main area of activity:
Film
Rationale:
Previously I have made a music video and the tv advert. This has helped me in understanding the
video making process and how to fine tune my skills in finding an aspect of filmmaking that works
for me. I am going to use my photography skills I developed in the print unit to help with making
the video look nice and be attractive to the audience. The combination of photography and
videography in this project will allow me to decide which route I want to go down later on.
Audience
My production will be aimed at tourists who want to travel to York for a day trip or weekend trip. It
will be aimed more for women as stereotypically they enjoy shopping and going out places. These
are two of the main aspects of my video series. The main age range will be 25-64 as these are the
types of people who will be able and willing to come to York and see what it has to offer. This is
because York is very historic and has a rich history that doesn’t possibly interest younger people
unlike adults and middle-aged people. In terms of sexuality it will be aimed at all the sexualities.
This is because York is a very liberal with yearly parades and a big gay community, I will try to
include this in my videos as it is a very big part of this city. Another big audience group that I will
advertise more for are the ABC1 Social Grade people. This is because, being a major city,
everything is very expensive and those people with a higher grade have more money to spend on
luxury items when out and about. Looking at psychographics, I am going to tailor each video
towards different groups of people. Video 1 will have the people who enjoy History and looking at
the sites that the city has to offer. Video 2 will be for the people who enjoy local food places that
boast sustainability and aren’t run by big corporations, this would be a socially conscious type A
person. Finally, Video 3 will be for the needs driven people who enjoy shopping and impulse
buying as it is about the local shops and business that are in York. Looking at the uses and
gratifications theory it can be used for 1/4 reasons put forward in Denis McQuail’s book. This for
information. Being an advert for a city it gives information and can help people decide where to go
if they are looking for things to do.
Project Concept:
I am going to create 3 separate social media videos for the city of York looking at the main 3
aspects, Historics, Independent Food shops and markets, and the shopping aspect mainly looking
at the independent ones. They are all going to be in the style of a hyper lapse, this style adds an
interesting visual that peaks the interest of the audience. There main purpose will be to make
people come to York and see the places in the video. I am going to make the videos with VISIT
YORK in mind as I will add their logo to it to make it look established. I am probably going to use
music produced in York to stay loyal to the brand but that may not work out too well.
I am going to do a lot of location research so I can have the best places in the video. I am going to
scout out every location before day 1 of production so I don’t miss anything that could be included.
I will also research techniques for making hyper lapse videos and fancy effects I can use to add
interest to the viewer. I am going to study the works of Peter McKinnon and Tommy Lundberg for
creative inspiration

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
Throughout the project I will be doing weekly, and daily during the production, reflections in the
form of Production Reflections. This will allow me to reflect week to week and understand possible
week points that I can improve before submission. I am also going to do a big final self-reflection at
the end of the project and analyses my work and its outcomes.
This process will allow me to work on my weak points as I continue through the course and onto
university. This will also help with my work in the media industry as it means I can be the best I can
be.
