Video Planning Guide - GENERIC DONE.pptx

  1. 1. FACTUAL PLANNING DOC Jamie Brown
  2. 2. TASK 1 Idea Generation and Research
  3. 3. RESEARCH To summarise I feel like the research that I conducted was extremely helpful and has allowed me to gain a better understanding on what type of documentary style I am wanting to use and what would best fit my idea. When looking at the few subgenres of documentaries there was lots of things that I also found out that wouldn’t be useful for me, which would then help me further realise how I want my video to be laid out. By conducting this research I have found a better understanding of my target audience, this allows my project to be better aimed at the right audience which should help the final piece. I have also learned about the different editing techniques and how they become useful for the viewers perspective, what I mean by this is that there is a certain type of editing style used in the docs that I think could be useful for my final piece. Some examples of these techniques are fast paced editing, quick/smooth transitions etc.
  4. 4. POTENTIAL APPROACHES My first potential approach is to create a fashion documentary on today's current trends and what different people like within the trends. I will also discuss a subgenre of fashion that I am interested in which is Gorp Core. I am planning to supply stock images that are edited to make it my own on photoshop, alongside this I will also take my own photos/videos to help give the viewers a better viewing experience. Another potential approach is I was wanting to make a podcast discussing the different apps and how social media is affecting everyone today. This was a good idea to me because I recognize that it is a hot topic, and I would be able to speak a lot about the topic. However, its an idea that I am not going to take any further mainly because its something that I am not overlay interested in which I would then lose interest in.
  5. 5. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO USE I am planning to use different camera movements and different shot types to create a unique viewing experience for my audience, by doing this it will allow me to educate an unaware audience about modern day fashion trends. Another potential technique that I am going to use regarding my documentary is different editing styles/techniques. For example, I am planning to use a faster paced editing style to engage my audience, I am also planning to include stock footage and images to help support my point while I am narrating.
  6. 6. CONVENTIONS OF YOUR CHOSEN FORMAT/GENRE YOU ARE WORKING TO Common aspects of documentaries is that they examine real life themes going on in peoples lives or in everyone's lives, this relates to me because my topic is about fashion which is something that everyone is aware of, but I am planning to highlight different subgenres that people may not be aware of. Every documentary has a meaning or purpose behind them so when refereeing to my idea I am planning to educate my audience on the different fashion trends with todays society. Another aspect that is heavily thought about when creating a documentary is different production methods for example, I will be on a tight budget which will have to be considered when I am in production and I will have to plan out my ideas that will be realistic.
  7. 7. SUMMARY I think that my idea will work quite well with a documentary style of video, this is because fashion is something that I am extremely interested in and by being invested into this subject it will allow me to create a video where I can cover a wide range of points. By interviewing the public about fashion, I think will help further extend my primary research and I should receive a variety of answers which will be interesting to see. A lot of the footage I can record by myself which will help with the production speed however may reduce the production quality. There are many places around me that I can go to, to gather footage for my documentary. I will go to more than just one location when carrying out my interviews, this will potentially give me different answers to the location prior. There is equipment at college that I could use which would help with the production quality, for example the lighting at college will be useful for images and the green screen is something that I am wanting to implement into my video so that I can have a more interesting background other than a plain black/white wall.
  8. 8. SUMMARY Relying on having a cameraman with me most of the time will be difficult to deal with as not everyone is always available, another point that is related to this is that people that I know may not know how to work a camera correctly and could end up being blurry. It may be hard to get the publics attention when I am wanting to interview them as most of time, they don’t want to be stopped being random people in the street. I will need to work on my confidence when approaching people as I don’t want to come across as nervous as it will put them off. I was planning to use lots of images of the internet to help give a visual representation of what I will be discussing, I will need to edit these pictures which could be a problem as it could be quite time consuming. The studio may be fully booked by the time that I book a slot which could result in me having to change my shot list due to the studio being in use. I would be needing to use the lighting equipment and the green screen. As I am needing to film my interviews, I will be wanting the whether to be as good as possible as there may not be many people out in town when I am needing to film, the equipment could also become damaged.
  9. 9. FINAL IDEA – RATIONALE I have decided on this idea because its something that I am interested in, in my spare time which will allow for me to create a project that has got some real thought into it which should then come out with a better result. I also feel like I have good communication skills and when it comes to interviewing random people, I will have the confidence to go up to them and try and get an interview out of the interaction. I am planning to try figure out what current trends are people into these days by asking them multiple questions related to the topic, I also want to understand how important peoples style is to them as I am unaware if people are as interested in fashion as I am. I think a documentary format is the perfect way for me to portray my idea of fashion as it will allow me to be informative while also supplying visuals to help support
  10. 10. FINAL IDEA – CREATIVE CONCEPT I am wanting to make a documentary while making it a YouTube style video, for example I want the video to be quite fast paced as it will help get a lot of information in quickly. I am planning to make it fast paced because I think it helps with the viewer attention. The documentary will aim to find out what people's opinions are on current fashion trends and what sort of things they like and dislike, I am wanting to make this in a comedic way and the way I plan to do that is to include my own opinions on what I mainly dislike with today's current trends. I am also wanting to cover a subgenre of fashion which is ‘Gorp Core’, I believe that this is the new and upcoming genre of fashion and I think it will be here to stay. In the documentary I will cover why I think that Gorp Core is up and coming and why I love the trend so much.
  11. 11. TASK 2 Pre-production Assessment
  12. 12. GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make it. Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipment you would need and resources, etc Resources to support this are on Teams. Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
  13. 13. TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION OUTLINE Summary of intended production: Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome and what will be delivered [duration, format[s], etc] Specific outline your intended technical/equipment requirements Include any details that you think [you could use material from a pitch]
  14. 14. LOCATIONS My first location for interviews will be York City center this won't be too far away from my house which will be beneficial for me Another location that I will be planning to film for the interviews will be Leeds city center as the demographic there will be different to York for example. My final location for my interviews will be in Harrogate, this will be the most suitable place for me to film as that’s where I live. One location that I will film myself narrating will be at college using the green screen in the studio
  15. 15. EQUIPMENT I will need a camera and a tripod for the filming process When I am recording in college I will need to hire the studio to film because I will need the lighting to help make the recording look more professional I will also look at using the green screen at college so that I can have something more interesting in the background but this isn’t essential
  16. 16. FACILITIES I will edit my video at college using the computers and I will also use premiere pro at home so that I can always update and change anything. College will be the place that I will be using
  17. 17. SCRIPT - The future of fashion. Now let's be real what is the real future of fashion? Well, I am going to try cover what I think will be popular in the next coming years. - Most people now a days tend to hop onto current trends which are changing every other month, these are the people who mainly no nothing about fashion they just like what seems to be popular at the time we will call them clones for the time being. iiiiii may or may not fall into the clone category myself however this isn’t about me. - Now let's start with one of the main fashion trends that seemed to of spiked interest within the fashion community and I am talking about ‘Gorp Core’. Good olé raisins and peanuts is the acronym for the word Gorp this is because of the very popular snack mix that campers and hikers use on there outdoor activities. The style is a combination of practical and comfort
  18. 18. PROPS/COSTUME/CONSUMAB LES/ETC Costume is the main part of my project, and I will need to be constantly showing footage/images of different outfits. Regarding my outfit I will be wearing my normal sort of outfits and will be wearing pieces that I can speak about when going through items of clothing.
  19. 19. TASK 3.1 Creative or Visual Planning
  20. 20. INTERVIEWS I do not know the people that I will be interviewing so I am unaware of their names or contact information I am planning to use vox pops for my interviewing process, I have decided on this because I think it best suits my idea on fashion because there are lots of different opinions on today's fashion trends and I would like to get a wide range of responses by using the public. The locations that I will be going to will be York, Leeds and Harrogate. This will be able to give me a variety in responses to my questions which will allow for some diversity within the project. I am planning to ask the same couple of questions to all of the people that I will be interviewing, I think by doing this it will come together quite nicely when it comes to the editing process.
  21. 21. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS What is your current favourite fashion trend ? What is a fashion item that you wouldn’t wear? How important is your style to you? Around how much is every item of clothing worth?
  22. 22. MOOD BOARD
  23. 23. INTERVIEW TEST (193) Interview test - YouTube
  24. 24. SHOT LIST - VIDEO Shot Number Shot Type Shot Duration 1 Close up shot of me in the shower with jacket it on 15secs 2 Close up shot of me speaking into camera 20secs 3 Wider angle of me speaking into camera 10secs 4 Long range shot of public 5secs 5 4 repeated 5secs 6 Close up shot of me showing items of clothing to camera 5secs
  25. 25. SHOT LIST - VIDEO Shot Number Shot Type Shot Duration 8 Over the shoulder shot 3secs 9 Green screen shot 5secs 10 Mid range shot low angle of me in bedroom 3-5secs 11 Long range shot of public 15secs 12 Wider angle shot of me speaking to camera 10secs 13 Straight close shot speaking to camera 30secs 14 Medium range shot of me in 20-30secs
  26. 26. STORYBOARD VIDEO/INTERVIEW
  27. 27. AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING For my documentary I will be including a voiceover/narration over the footage that I will of collected for my final product. More specifically this will include me recording my narration using my own personal mic at home. I will also include a variety of sound effects and soundtracks to help enhance the overall production quality.
  28. 28. TASK 3.2 Organisational Planning
  29. 29. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO Jamie Brown (07539509576) - Main character, Videographer, Narrator Robyn Brown – Cameraman/women Joe Plaskitt – Interviewee Lucy Hall – Interviewee
  30. 30. LOCATION INFORMATION I am planning to film my interviews in York city center so that I will be able to gain a wider ranged audience which will help with my responses. I will also be filming at my house for some of the shots including me showing items of clothing to the camera. Another location will be Harrogate town as this is the most accessible place for me to film however if no one will allow to be interviewed I will have to go somewhere else. Leeds city center will be another location to gather footage of people's outfits but also to gather interviews.
  31. 31. RISK ASSESSMENT Risk Number Risk 1 Equipment could get damaged depending on the weather 2 People that I will be needing to help me film may not be available on said day 3 I may get the wrong response from asking people to be interviewed 4 5 6 7
  32. 32. CONTINGENCY PLAN/TECHNICAL . There could be issues with the camera equipment e.g. Camera could be out of charge, not enough space in SD card etc. . I don’t have access to premiere or photoshop currently at home so I wont be able to edit footage in my spare time. . Transferring footage onto the college computer could take a while but not only that I may miss certain bits of footage as they could be corrupt. .
  33. 33. CONTINGENCY PLAN/LOCATION . I may not get many results from Harrogate as the people that live/visit there ill not want to be disturbed most of the time. I also think that Harrogate is more of a older demographic which wouldn’t help me with my project. . People that I will need to help me with recording will need to make their own way to the different locations which could become a problem if they have no ay of getting there. . Because I will be recording most if not all of my interviews outside I will need the weather to be good on the day of filming and if not then there will be no one to interview as no one will be outside.
  34. 34. CONTINGENCY PLAN/PERSONNEL . People that I need may not be able to make it on the day of recording which would ruin the whole plan and would then have to reschedule . The public may not want to be interviewed and could give me irrelevant responses, this would end up to being a waste of time for both me and the interviewee . My cameraman may not be available at all times so I will have to get someone to fill in for some extra clips and they could end up being blurry.
  35. 35. CONTINGENCY PLAN/ORGANISATIONAL . The studio may be fully booked and in use at all times which would make me lose time as I will be needing to use equipment in there.
  36. 36. CLEARANCE AND PERMISSIONS Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your video must have a completed form Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and insert here

Editor's Notes

  • 5 restrictions to your ideas
  • Why this idea? Why this format? What skills do you have that support this and what are you looking forward to exploring more.
  • What do you want to make, reference the look, style and type of project. This could be a synopsis of the piece and some visual reference points. Reference content and the themes you are wanting to explore and resources that might help you to achieve your aims.
  • You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?

  • What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
  • Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Teams.

  • Remember, video production is a multi-sensory medium, do not forget your audio planning, whether this is for spoken dialogue, VO/narration, sound effect or soundtrack. This needs detailed planning, linking to sequencing and sourcing/creating.
  • Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production, using a table is suggested
  • Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest solutions
