Intricate stages of Riccia's life, from spore germination to the development of gametophytes and sporophytes. Explore the unique reproductive strategies, environmental influences, and biological adaptations that shape the lifecycle of Riccia. Whether you're a student, researcher, or simply curious about the wonders of plant biology, this presentation promises an illuminating exploration of Riccia's life cycle.
3. Introduction
The genus Riccia was named in honor of P.F Riccia Florentine politician . It
is widely distributed all over the world. It includes about 200 species all
the spices are terrestrial except one species Riccia fluitans , which is
aquatic . It is found in free floating condition . The other species are found
in moist places like banks of streams , tree , trunks, wet-walls, rocks.

5. Habit & Habitat
Riccia are mostly terrestrial , except Riccia fluitans.
Riccia is cosmopolitan. It commonly is present in southern
hemisphere. In India about 31 species grow in various regions. In
Maharashtra it is very common in lonavala , khandala, etc.

structure of
thallus

The plant body of Riccia
is gametophytic. The
gametophyte is a flat,
dichotomously branched,
dorsiventral prostrate,
ribbon-like, green, fleshy
thallus. Each branch of the
thallus is linear to wedge-
shaped or obcordate.

assimilatory region on the
dorsal side(upper side).
• The parenchymatous or
storage on the ventral
side (lower side)
11. Types of reproduction in Riccia
Vegetative reproduction
• In favorable conditions, the
plants multiple from the pre-
existing part of themselves
• Types : fragmentation, tuber,
etc
Sexual reproduction
• Sexual reproduction is fusion
of both male and female
gametes to form a diploid
zygote

Asexual reproduction
• Asexual or cloning is the
process of formation of an
offspring without involvement
of any gametes

vegetative
reproductions

Tubers : in some species
of Riccia, lobes of thallus
are formed in unfavorable
conditions and in
favorable conditions they
resume growing into
individuals
14. Sexual reproduction in Riccia
• In unfavorable conditions:-
In unfavorable conditions they
sexual reproduces through
“oogamous”. The gonads are
developed and well differentiated.
Male gonad is called “antheridium” &
female gonad is called
“archegonium”.

17. spore
The riccia sporophyte consists of a peripheral layer of cells that form the wall
of the capsule and a central mass of the mother cell that contains spores. The
diploid zygote is the first generation of sporophyte cells. The sporophyte of
Riccia is the simplest because as it contains only capsule, both the foot and
seta are absent. It consists a peripheral layer of cells constituting the capsule
wall and a central mass of spore mother cell which produces spores.
