4. My cover image
My media product that I have designed is an electronic music magazine.
I chose this particular photo for a variety of reasons:
I decided to put ‘Felix Neal’ on the cover photo as the main story as from my primary
research people did associate the style of the artist with the genre. I asked the artist to
put his hand over his mouth and give a smile, almost as if he has done something
wrong, this in turn intriguing my target audience. The pose that the artist is doing can
also be seen, stereotypically as a feminine pose. This was important as my target
audience isn’t just male, but also female. From the photo the artist is male however it
also appeals to the female market because of the pose of the artist. This magazine
then appeals to all genders, what I have done could be seen as something different
and what you wouldn’t stereotypically expect however it was important to engage all
genders.
The social group that I was aiming for was at students that meant that I included
information and language to attract the student market, however I did make sure it
was also appealing to consumers who liked the electronic music genre. I did this by
using stereotypical design choices in the cover, for example using blue. From my
audience research and from my focus group it was clear that the colour blue was
accosted with electronic music. Blue also had connotations of affordability and being
premium. Therefor appealing to students and others interested in the music genre.
The price of £2.99 is also displayed on the cover, 60% of my target market said they
would be willing to spend £3 on a music magazine
5. My contents image
I chose this photo for a variety of reasons
In my contents page I have made sure that the artist is looking away
from the camera, this will engage my target audience. This is because
it will intrigue them as they don’t know what he's looking that. Also
the photo is slightly out of focus, this means that the artist isn’t too
eye catching and it means that the other items on the page are still
easily visible.
I have also continued the colour scheme used throughout the
magazine, this includes the blue and the white in the masthead. These
colours are important as they continue to have connotations of being
premium and being affordable and also related to the specific genre of
music magazine that I have created.
In the photo I made sure that the artist had dark black clothing on, this
is what students typically wear, dark clothing.
6. My double page spread images
I chose the photos in the pages for variety
of reasons:
In the double page spread I decided to
use to separate images of the artist
looking at the camera, this is a technique
called a direct gaze. This was important in
my magazine as there are questions asked
towards the artist and there were answers
provided also. Since he seems to be
looking right at the consumer it seems
almost as if the consumer and Felix Neal
are having a conversation. This was
important as it fit the overall design of the
magazine as it was a interview type
conversation and this meant that it
attracted the target audience to read into
the story in depth.
In these photos I have not challenged
what people have come to except from an
electronic music magazine, that means
that the artist is particularly healthy and
has no sign of physical disabilities. This
makes him a stereotypical electronic
music artist.
