2. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
Firstly, I had a look and researched into many music
magazines of the genre I wanted to base mine around
which was chart music. I found a target audience of 11-
19 year olds as I researched radio stations to find the
target audience statistics broken down. This helped me
understand my age gap and I found that the majority of
11-19 year olds listen to chart music/pop music. This
helped me plan my target audience and how to
approach them. My main focus was to target and
capture youth and there are links I made within my
media product that represented youth.
3. Front cover
My media product represents particular social groups. I have done
this on my front cover, as I have used a model who is mixed race.
However, this is due to coincidence. Meaning, this magazine would
appeal to a predominantly white audience. This could means my
front cover’s main image would represent a multicultural music
industry which recently has become integrated and tends to work
together. I have used bright colours on my front cover which could
represent a younger social group as bright colours could represent
the boldness of youth. There is also online references on the front
cover as there is a given website for the readers to visit again, this
could represent youth as younger people are commonly known to
use technology more than older people. I have also talked about
festival styles which younger people tend to be more social and are
seen at festivals and other social outings again this could be seen as
a representation of youth.
4. Contents page
My contents page could represent particular social groups such as a
Muslim audience as well as a predominantly white audience as I
have used a model called Eman. I used Eman to represent a
different nationality in the music industry as I used Ariana Grande,
former pop singer as style inspiration. This could develop my
audience and bring in diverse audiences from different nationalities
even though my target audience is mainly white readers.
Furthermore, this adds variety into my music magazine media
product. Also my contents page shows references again to
technology as there is the use of earphones in a picture. This shows
a link to youth as teenagers are normally associated with the use of
technology and music through technological devices. There is also a
male model featured in my contents page. This expands my
audience to males as well even though my chosen target audience
was mainly females, there may be males who buy the magazine as
well.
5. Double page spread
My double page spread could represent particular social groups
such as females as the main image model is female. This could also
represent youth as the poses my model is doing shows youth and
vulnerability, mostly associated with youth and younger audiences.
She is also posing with a guitar which could represent acoustic
music, which my appeal to a more mature sophisticated audience
like the higher end of my target audience scale e.g. 15+. I have also
stuck to my colour scheme, using pink white and black. These
colours are associated with femininity, meaning it could link in to a
female audience. Which is my aimed target audience.
