2. Introduction
HertsRock is a rock-genre music magazine designed for Hertfordshire residents to feel
proud about their heritage in terms of this genre.
This magazine aims to promote Hertfordshire rock artists to the public and renown the
area for its diverse music landscape. It also gives a chance for lesser known artists to
gain popularity from their home town and county, boosting their status.
The name HertsRock was chosen because it clearly states what the magazine’s
purpose is – a rock magazine based in Hertfordshire.

3. Target audience
The main target audience for HertsRock is teenagers and young adults between the
ages of 16-21, and men. This is because stereotypically young men are into more thrill-
inducing music, such as rock and screamo. This has been decided from research on
NME’s statistics, that show 66% of males compared to 34% of females read the indie-
rock genre newspaper.
My secondary target audience is from the age of 18-60, as from my research this is the
general age for music fans, and those under 18 and over 60 may not like heavy music
as it can be very strong on their ears.

4. What will the magazine include?
The magazine will include factual information and interviews with and about various
rock bands, but primarily those based/founded in Hertfordshire.
An example of a rock band in Hertfordshire are The Hunna, who are a 4-membered
band originating from Watford. Their debut album, ‘100’, which earned a Silver
certificate from the BPI [British Phonographic Industry].
Another example, but outside of Hertfordshire, are Bring Me The Horizon, who are
originally from Sheffield and are a rock band consisting of 5 members.

5. How will I get my bands and interviews?
In the early stages of the magazine, I am planning on using interviews that exist online
already. As the magazine gains popularity, I am hoping to hire interviewers who are able
to contact band labels and arrange interviews and events.
I will also contact labels myself prior to interviews in order to receive permission.

6. How will I advertise the magazine?
I am currently looking at advertising within pubs and social media, but want to branch
out to restaurants and other venues that play music. My ideas for social media are
Nextdoor and Twitter, where I can tag local locations.

7. What’s so special about HertsRock?
HertsRock is about celebrating the genre of rock within Hertfordshire, since this genre is
so overly under-represented in media surrounding Herts. Rock is one of the genres in
Herts that is not talked about, primarily due to the fact that stereotypically it is a peaceful
county that has calm music, and stars such as George Ezra and Alesha Dixon.
In terms of distribution, HertsRock will be available online and also in retail stores.

9. Extra information
- There will be roughly 30-40 pages of content, with an attempt to split this half
regional and half nationwide.
- As for the price, I am looking at setting the RRP for the magazine at £3 due to the
large amount of content and quality of the magazine.
- I hope to release this magazine monthly, and will fall back onto dated content (such
as older interviews
- I am planning on doing a spread of 60% local material and 40% national material, but
primarily local because of the nature of the magazine - based in Hertfordshire and
about local artists, majorly.
