Teaching a diverse classroom of 20 kindergarten students including new English learners and an autistic child
1. Group Description
The classroom where I taught had twenty children that were about 5 years
old approximately, most of them were acquainted to the school, to the teachers
and the ways of working in the classroom.
However, there were some new students that had some problems with the
language as they had never learnt English before, and their knowledge about the
language didn't even reached the minimum required for this kindergarten, they
didn't even know the primary colors.
Another thing to bear in mind was that in this classroom there was an
autistic boy, so there were some problems that in other circumstances (without
any integrated child), weren't. The first thing that I realized was that my lessons
were interrupted several times because of this child (he didn't use to behave).
Also, there were some days in which this student had a great predisposition
to work, but unfortunately most of the times he had problems to concentrate, so
those days I had to let him work freely.
Furthermore, as this child couldn't work alone, there was an special
teacher in the classroom all the time, who had to transmit the boy the knowledge
I was teaching the rest of the students.
Finally I could say that the group in general was very nice and hard worker,
I didn't have major problems and I really enjoyed this experience very much.
