1. Self evaluation 3
Now that I have finished the third period, I could observe some
positive and negative aspects in my teaching. The positive thing is that I
noticed that I'm not one of those teachers who sits in front of the class and
waits for students to finish their works, all the contrary, I'm constantly
moving, walking around the classroom, always waiting for students' calls,
so I can go to their seats and clear any doubt they could have.
Another positive aspect is that I'm really patient, which is a virtue
that many teachers don't have. Students called me over and over again to
ask me things about the tasks, and perhaps the same student called me
several times to ask me something different, and I noticed that I spent that
time explaining him what he didn't understand. Another positive aspect is
that I didn't let one student hog all my attention, because there are students
who are more demanding than others, so in the videos I observed that I
knew how to distribute my time with all the students who needed my help.
Also, I could see that when I'm explaining anything, I talk to the
whole classroom, and not only to a few ones. There are some teachers who
tend to speak and show cards and pictures always to the same students, for
example, those who are sitting on the left. Fortunately, that's not my case,
everytime I talked to students I did it to all of them, and the same happened
with the pictures and photocopies.
On the other hand, I found out two aspects of my teaching that I
could consider them as negatives. The first one is that I always use the
same kind of vocabulary, which is basic, and I have the tendency to repeat
the question "yes?", which is something that bothers me as I think I look a
bit stupid with that twitch, so I'll try to change it in the future.
Finally, the other negative aspect is that perhaps I don't gesticulate
enough to express what I mean when I speak. I think I should use more my
arms, my hands and even my tone of voice to make myself easier to
understand when I talk to students. Maybe the nerves made me stay still, so
what I'm going to do is to record one more lesson, but this time with my
students, and the video will be only for me, so this way I will be able to
observe if I was nervous or if I'm that way all the time, in which case I'll try
to change that bad habit.
