8. PHYSICAL WEATHERING
MECHANICAL WEATHERING
• It refers to the Geological Process of rocks
breaking apart without changing their chemical
composition.
• It happens especially in places where there is
little soil or few plants grow such as mountainous
area and hot dessert
9. THERMAL EXPANSION • Aka ISOLATION
• It is a tendency of a matter to
change in size, shape area
and volume in response to
change in temperature
• usually occurs in arid places.
• Tendency of a mineral to
expand and contract based on
temperature.
10. FROST WEDGING • Water expands when it
freezes.
• It is usually occurs in areas
with extremely cold
conditions with insufficient
rainfall.
• The repeated freezing and
thawing of water found in the
cracks of rocks pushes the
rock to the breaking point
11. ABRASION • Physical grinding of
sediments and rock
fragments.
• It can be caused by wind
transporting sand or small
stones against surfaces of
rocks
12. BIOLOGICAL WEATHERING
• Occurs when there is
living matter interacts
with the weathering
process, causing the
rock to break down.
14. CARBONATION •occurs when carbon
dioxide from the moisture
in the air react with
carbonate minerals.
Carbonic acid break down
rocks when combine with
water
15. OXIDATION-
• when oxygen combines
with minerals such as
calcium and magnesium
and creates IRON OXIED
21. IMPORTANCE OF WEATHERING:
1. HELP SHAPE EARTH’S SURFACE
2. PRODUCES UNCONSOLIDATED MATERIAL
FROM WHICH SOIL IS FORMED.
3. PROVIDES PLANT NUTRIENTS
4. RESULTS IN THE FORMATION OF
SECONDARY MINERALS- CLAY MINERALS
