This poster is the part of the promotional package for
the ‘Rob Zombie’ remake of ‘John Carpenter's’ classic
‘Halloween’. The film was released on the 31st of
August 2007 and saw a total of $30.5 million in its
opening weekend box office. The narrative sees
Michael Myers, now a grown man and still very
dangerous, escapes from the mental institution after
being locked up for 17 years and return immediately to
Haddonfield to find his baby sister, Laurie. Myers
stalks Laurie and her friends as he goes on a
murderous rampage.
The colours used on the poster are stereotypical for
this genre. In the poster the colours orange, black,
white and red are predominately used as they are
closely connected to the annual event of halloween.
These colours could also represent binary opposites
as the colour white is used for good and the colour
black is used for evil. This helps represent a common
theme throughout the film of good vs evil. As well the
use of a black shadow is to signify that this character is the villain due to the connotations of
the colour being associated with evil and fear. In contrast the shadow stands out with the red
background which is used. As the red and orange are used to connote flames and hell which
supports the villains evilness and creates the idea of suspense and tension.
For the main image a silhouette is used through a long shot and is located in the centre of
the poster. This signifies that this is the films antagonist of the film as you can see the whole
body of the character and allows you to see the weapon which he is holding. Meaning he is
being portrayed as dangerous, violent and unpredictable. Supporting the overall message
that this character is pure evil and most likely the murderer in this film.
As previously said the recurring theme of this poster is the battle of good vs evil. As seen the
horror iconography presents this battle through colour. As well another theme that features is
death. This is shown by the background image of his mask having a skull shape created in
the middle. The skull suggests death will be a major film in the film as it signifies the death of
many people. As well in the mise-en-scene knife also represents this theme of death as it is
associated to be a weapon and used for killing his victims.
The typography for the poster sees ‘Halloween’ as the biggest piece of text shown on the
poster in a bold orange colour which directly links to the annual event of halloween. As it
connotes the typical thoughts for halloween as of pumpkins and fire. This title is in the
biggest font on the page and really stands out. The tagline is in white at the top of the page.
Aloughth it is not the biggest font on the page it still stands out well against the red and
orange background. The colours are contrasted week to show some sort of innocence or
hope shining through the darkness which could hint that maybe someone on the film
survives.

In the main image the fact that the shadow is holding a knife it symbolises death and murder
which supports the conventions of a horror film. This prop is an important part of establishing
a narrative as it gives a clue to how the murderer may kill his victims. As well in the other
hand it is obvious to see the villain holding a mask. This links to the way he wants to hide his
identity as they do not want to be known who he is. Of course this is a major convention for
the slasher genre so they have presented this in the poster to signify what sub-genre this
film is.
