POSTER RESEARCH
The background is dark, but in
the back you can see that there
is some light. Due to the fact
the killer is blocking the light
shows the power that he has.
The fact that one of his fingers
is a knife could give us the
idea that he is like an animal
and that his finger is actually a
claw. Due to the animal image
could make us think that he is
wild and out of control.
The typography is thin, sharp and bold and
the fact that it’s bold and sharp gives the
poster more power. The writing is also red
with red smudges around it. This conveys
rage, anger and death. The smudges also
suggest blood.
The date follows the red colour
scheme and also suggest that this day
is going to consist of lots of danger.
The date will also encourage people
to go out and watch the movie.
“Welcome to your new nightmare”. This tag line is
very inviting however it’s something that you
wouldn’t actually want to go to. This tag line also
puts you in the victim’s position. The tagline is in a
white front which has connotations of innocence
however this is a complete binary opposite and is
used to make is stand out from all the bright
colours.
Main image: A medium shot of the killer. His identity
is covered with his hat however we can see his face
is distorted and straight away this would make the
viewers scared/curious. He’s wearing a dirty jumper
that has holes in it on the colour red around the
edges. This conveys that even though he is comfy in
what he is wearing he is quiet dangerous and the
fact that the jumper is dirty tells us that he has been
up to something.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF ‘A
NIGHTMARE ON ELMS STREET’
 This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because the character is placed right in the middle to catch your
attentions straight away. In this poster the main character does not have direct eye contact with you, which then draws your attention
to his finger and the smirk on his face that makes you feel uncomfortable.
 The picture is a medium shot and this makes you feel more uncomfortable because now he is more in your face and apart from his
eyes you can see every detail of him.
 His clothes convey codes and conventions as the killer is never dressed up nice and doesn’t usually care about their appearance and
it is clear in this poster tat his clothes are ripped and old.
 The lighting in the background creates binary opposite as this is a horror poster and it should be dark, however his face is in the
spotlight and not only that his smile is also in the spotlight, this conveys the mystery in the poster and makes you wonder what is
going to happen.
 This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium,
where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when
equilibrium is restored. This poster conveys this by:
 Equilibrium: The light in the poster conveys hope. This tells us that even though it is a horror film and people will be dying, some
people are going to be able to escape. (The Final girl)
 Disruption: The killers face represents the disruption within the movie. We can tells from the texture of his skill that his face is burnt
and maybe due to this is why he wants to go out and murder people, so they feel his pain.
 Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: This is represented in the poster by his finger. Even though this represents pain,
betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice. The final girl is going to use a weapon that is going to eventually kill the killer and there is no more
evil in the area.
The black white and red colour
scheme reinforces the fact that it is a
horror and also has connotations of
power, death, evil, mystery, purity and
danger.
Her face draws the viewers’
attention straight away. The
fear in her eyes leave you
wondering what is going to
happen to her and the fact
that she is covering her
mouth and not screaming
goes as a binary opposite to
what the title is.
The tag line is what is going to make people
want to go and see it. “Clever, Hip” tells us
that it’s up to date with what’s happening in
society and the “scary” part reinforces the
fact that it’s a horror movie.
The typography throughout the
poster is white. However for the
Title the typography is more round
and bold and the fact that it’s bold
suggests power. The ‘M’ however
is not round and is very pointy
toward the middle, this could be
there to show the sharpness of the
knife.
The main characters are also on
the front cover and this is to help
the audience. This will help to
establish how good the movie is
good to be.
The main image is a close of what I
am assuming to be the final girl.
The spotlight is directly on her
which tells us that she is the centre
of attention throughout the movie
and even though she is covering
her mouth in the poster during the
movie she will be doing the most
screaming. Around her face is
however is complete darkness and
this tells us that there is no hope
for her.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF
‘SCREAM’
 This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because the final girl is placed right in the middle of the poster
above the other main characters who get killed. This links to a hierarchy, having the final girl at the top shows that in this movie
she is in a better position than the people below her as they are going to die and she is not.
 The picture of the final girl is a close up and once again this makes them fell like they are close to you and due to the fact that she
is the final girl this could convey that as the audience you will become closer to her character. The close up also allows us to see
what type of emotion she is in and you can tells that’s he is in shock and her eyes show fear. Also you can relate to her because
she is looking directly into your eyes, almost as if she is asking you for help. There are medium close ups of the other characters
and the medium close ups allows up to see more of them. They are all dressed in black and this could suggest their death within
the film.
 The spotlight on the final girls face with the dark background behind her creates a binary opposite. Also the fact that her eyes are
blue creates a binary opposite and this is because blue has connotations of innocence and softness, but the black background
goes completely against that and conveys the darkness in the movie that is going to over power all of them. The white writing also
creates a binary opposite as this suggests goodness and safety, but due to the fact that there is so much darkness in the poster in
shows that the goodness and safety will definitely be getting over shadowed.
 This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with
equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a
resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This poster conveys this by:
 Equilibrium: The light in the poster conveys hope, and due to the fact that the light is only on the final girl tells us that she is going
to be the last one standing.
 Disruption: The disruption in this poster is the use of the colour black , the black tells us that there was no hope within the movie.
 Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: The final girls blue eyes shows that there is a little but of hope in the movie
and due to the fact that the final girl is usually the smart one, this tells us that she is one who resolves everything.
The main image: This is a
close up of the Annabelle
doll. The doll is only
showing half of its face
this could imply that the
doll is 2 faced and has a
good and bad side to it.
The blood in the
eye: This tells us
that she is evil and
this doll is not safe
to be around.
Blood represents
life, so this gives us
the message that
doll is a real life
human.
The Title: The title is named ‘Annabelle’.
There is actually a baby toy named
Annabelle which is represented as a cute
sweet and friendly doll. This is a complete
binary opposite to that.
The typography is in
red and this tells us
that there will be lots
of blood, death, anger
and fear and this
reinforces horror
connotations.
The conjuring is displayed on the
photo and this is a good thing
because this is going to get
people who enjoyed that movie
to go and watch this one. This will
also help make more money for
the movie as it will attract a wider
audience.
The colour scheme: This
reinforces the whole horror
theme. The colours red and
black have connotations of
danger, death and fear.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF
‘ANNABELLE’
 This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because even though the doll is not placed in the middle of the poster, the doll
still catches your attention because the picture is a medium close up. This picture also follows codes and conventions because the doll has direct
eye contact with you and this shows the power that the doll has.
 The fact that the killer in this film is a doll creates a binary opposite because dolls are usually seen as cute and friendly, however this doll has
blood rolling out of its eye and this tells straight away that something is wrong with the doll. The black background also creates a binary opposite
as the spotlight is on the doll and this could be to highlight the good connotations that any other doll would have.
 This poster follows horror codes and conventions as it follows the colour scheme of black, white and red. These colours create a gloomy mood
and atmosphere and starts to make you feel uncomfortable about what is going to happen in this movie. Another thing that would start to make
you feel uncomfortable is the blood coming out of her eye. Blood is a convention if horror films, but the blood tells us that there is going to be
death and disruption within the movie.
 This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where
everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is
restored. This poster conveys this by:
 Equilibrium: The doll would of just started off as a little girls favourite toy, This could be the reason why there is a spotlight on the doll to show
that once up on a time this doll was a good doll.
 Disruption: The disruption in this poster is the blood rolling out of the dolls eyes the blood tells us that this is a doll that you should beware of.
 Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: This poster is harder to find what the resolution of this movie will be. The only thing that
brings hope into this movie is the dolls blue eyes.
 In all of the posters it is conventional to have all the writing, e.g. the
title, tagline and casting crew at the bottom of the poster and this is
because this is not the main focus. It is also conventional to have the
writing in white and red, not only because it makes it standout but
because this contrast of red tells us that a lot of bad things will be
taking place within the movie, like pain death and fear, but then the
white tells us that there still could be hope within the movie and
something good will come out of the movie.

  • 3. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF ‘A NIGHTMARE ON ELMS STREET’  This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because the character is placed right in the middle to catch your attentions straight away. In this poster the main character does not have direct eye contact with you, which then draws your attention to his finger and the smirk on his face that makes you feel uncomfortable.  The picture is a medium shot and this makes you feel more uncomfortable because now he is more in your face and apart from his eyes you can see every detail of him.  His clothes convey codes and conventions as the killer is never dressed up nice and doesn’t usually care about their appearance and it is clear in this poster tat his clothes are ripped and old.  The lighting in the background creates binary opposite as this is a horror poster and it should be dark, however his face is in the spotlight and not only that his smile is also in the spotlight, this conveys the mystery in the poster and makes you wonder what is going to happen.  This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This poster conveys this by:  Equilibrium: The light in the poster conveys hope. This tells us that even though it is a horror film and people will be dying, some people are going to be able to escape. (The Final girl)  Disruption: The killers face represents the disruption within the movie. We can tells from the texture of his skill that his face is burnt and maybe due to this is why he wants to go out and murder people, so they feel his pain.  Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: This is represented in the poster by his finger. Even though this represents pain, betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice. The final girl is going to use a weapon that is going to eventually kill the killer and there is no more evil in the area.
  • 4. The black white and red colour scheme reinforces the fact that it is a horror and also has connotations of power, death, evil, mystery, purity and danger. Her face draws the viewers’ attention straight away. The fear in her eyes leave you wondering what is going to happen to her and the fact that she is covering her mouth and not screaming goes as a binary opposite to what the title is. The tag line is what is going to make people want to go and see it. “Clever, Hip” tells us that it’s up to date with what’s happening in society and the “scary” part reinforces the fact that it’s a horror movie. The typography throughout the poster is white. However for the Title the typography is more round and bold and the fact that it’s bold suggests power. The ‘M’ however is not round and is very pointy toward the middle, this could be there to show the sharpness of the knife. The main characters are also on the front cover and this is to help the audience. This will help to establish how good the movie is good to be. The main image is a close of what I am assuming to be the final girl. The spotlight is directly on her which tells us that she is the centre of attention throughout the movie and even though she is covering her mouth in the poster during the movie she will be doing the most screaming. Around her face is however is complete darkness and this tells us that there is no hope for her.
  • 5. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF ‘SCREAM’  This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because the final girl is placed right in the middle of the poster above the other main characters who get killed. This links to a hierarchy, having the final girl at the top shows that in this movie she is in a better position than the people below her as they are going to die and she is not.  The picture of the final girl is a close up and once again this makes them fell like they are close to you and due to the fact that she is the final girl this could convey that as the audience you will become closer to her character. The close up also allows us to see what type of emotion she is in and you can tells that’s he is in shock and her eyes show fear. Also you can relate to her because she is looking directly into your eyes, almost as if she is asking you for help. There are medium close ups of the other characters and the medium close ups allows up to see more of them. They are all dressed in black and this could suggest their death within the film.  The spotlight on the final girls face with the dark background behind her creates a binary opposite. Also the fact that her eyes are blue creates a binary opposite and this is because blue has connotations of innocence and softness, but the black background goes completely against that and conveys the darkness in the movie that is going to over power all of them. The white writing also creates a binary opposite as this suggests goodness and safety, but due to the fact that there is so much darkness in the poster in shows that the goodness and safety will definitely be getting over shadowed.  This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This poster conveys this by:  Equilibrium: The light in the poster conveys hope, and due to the fact that the light is only on the final girl tells us that she is going to be the last one standing.  Disruption: The disruption in this poster is the use of the colour black , the black tells us that there was no hope within the movie.  Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: The final girls blue eyes shows that there is a little but of hope in the movie and due to the fact that the final girl is usually the smart one, this tells us that she is one who resolves everything.
  • 6. The main image: This is a close up of the Annabelle doll. The doll is only showing half of its face this could imply that the doll is 2 faced and has a good and bad side to it. The blood in the eye: This tells us that she is evil and this doll is not safe to be around. Blood represents life, so this gives us the message that doll is a real life human. The Title: The title is named ‘Annabelle’. There is actually a baby toy named Annabelle which is represented as a cute sweet and friendly doll. This is a complete binary opposite to that. The typography is in red and this tells us that there will be lots of blood, death, anger and fear and this reinforces horror connotations. The conjuring is displayed on the photo and this is a good thing because this is going to get people who enjoyed that movie to go and watch this one. This will also help make more money for the movie as it will attract a wider audience. The colour scheme: This reinforces the whole horror theme. The colours red and black have connotations of danger, death and fear.
  • 7. CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF ‘ANNABELLE’  This poster follows the codes and conventions of a horror poster because even though the doll is not placed in the middle of the poster, the doll still catches your attention because the picture is a medium close up. This picture also follows codes and conventions because the doll has direct eye contact with you and this shows the power that the doll has.  The fact that the killer in this film is a doll creates a binary opposite because dolls are usually seen as cute and friendly, however this doll has blood rolling out of its eye and this tells straight away that something is wrong with the doll. The black background also creates a binary opposite as the spotlight is on the doll and this could be to highlight the good connotations that any other doll would have.  This poster follows horror codes and conventions as it follows the colour scheme of black, white and red. These colours create a gloomy mood and atmosphere and starts to make you feel uncomfortable about what is going to happen in this movie. Another thing that would start to make you feel uncomfortable is the blood coming out of her eye. Blood is a convention if horror films, but the blood tells us that there is going to be death and disruption within the movie.  This poster follows Todorov theory, who exclaims that all narratives follow a three part structure where they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress as something comes along to disrupt that equilibrium, and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This poster conveys this by:  Equilibrium: The doll would of just started off as a little girls favourite toy, This could be the reason why there is a spotlight on the doll to show that once up on a time this doll was a good doll.  Disruption: The disruption in this poster is the blood rolling out of the dolls eyes the blood tells us that this is a doll that you should beware of.  Recognition of disruption, the equilibrium is resorted: This poster is harder to find what the resolution of this movie will be. The only thing that brings hope into this movie is the dolls blue eyes.
  • 8.  In all of the posters it is conventional to have all the writing, e.g. the title, tagline and casting crew at the bottom of the poster and this is because this is not the main focus. It is also conventional to have the writing in white and red, not only because it makes it standout but because this contrast of red tells us that a lot of bad things will be taking place within the movie, like pain death and fear, but then the white tells us that there still could be hope within the movie and something good will come out of the movie.
