1. One of the film posters I have chosen to
analyse is ‘The Last House on the Left’. The
poster focuses on dark mise-en-scene
elements which show traditional horror
conventions. The poster is very simplistic
however very effective.
In the title, the word ‘HOUSE’ is in red
writing, rather than the rest of the title
which is in white. The red writing shows
connotations of blood, danger and death.
The word ‘HOUSE’ also looks as though
the writing has been ‘clawed’ which could
suggest there is some type of monster in
the house.
The only lit area is a light shining behind
the house showing the house is emerging
from the darkness.
The tag line ‘IF BAD PEOPLE HURT SOMEONE
YOU LOVE, HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO
HURT THEM BACK?’ is very effective and
powerful as it asks a rhetorical question,
directed to the audience, which gets the
audience involved in the film.
2. The film poster for ‘Sinister’ is very powerful
and effective. Unlike other horror
posters, the mise-en-scene is light which
juxtaposes the typical horror conventions.
By including what other hit films, the
producer has produced, this attracts the
fan audience of these other films and
since the other films were so successful it
shows what can be expected of the film.
The child suggests vulnerability. We
can not see her face which adds
mystery to the character. The child is
looking down which suggests she fears
what is around her. The child is dressed
in nightwear, this shows that the events
which happen in the film happen at
night which reflects the typical horror
genre.
The tag line ‘ONCE YOU SEE
HIM, NOTHING CAN SAVE YOU’ is very
effective as it gets the audience
involved by saying ‘YOU’.
3. ‘Mirrors’ is a horror film released in 2008.
The poster for this film shows all horror
conventions. The mise-en-scene is very
dark, which suggests mystery and the
unknown. We can’t see all of the characters
face which adds a chilling character to the
woman. The poster shows a typical female
victim which reflects typical horror
conventions. the poster another film is
At the top of
mentioned which will attract the fan
audience of this film. The audience will also
know what to expect of the film by including
this. On the poster, the creators have
mentioned a famous actor who appears in
the film. This will attract his fan base
however this goes against the typical horror
films as famous actors/actresses do not
normally appear in horror films to make the
film seem more realistic.
The title of the film ‘MIRRORS’ is in red
which shows connotations of blood and
danger. The poster does not feature a tag
line.
4. Another film poster I have chose to analyse is
the poster for ‘THE WOMAN IN BLACK’. At
the top of the poster a famous actor is
mentioned which will attract his fans and
fans of the other films he appears in.
However including an extremely famous
actor in a horror film juxtaposes the typical
horrors as famous actors do not regularly
appear in horror films to make it seem more
realistic and based on facts.
The marshland background shows where
the film is set. The woman is the main
focus of the poster, we can not see her
face which adds mystery. There is also a
group of children however they appear as
ghosts. The children characters suggest
vulnerability.
The tag line ‘SHE’LL NEVER LET GO’
causes the audience to ask questions to
themselves and imagine their own plot
for the film.
5. Paranormal Activity 3 was released in 2011
and is the third film of the Paranormal activity
series. It is a prequel to the other two films.
There is a shadow on the wall but we can not
see that figure anywhere else in the room
suggesting it is not a human. The shadow is
dark which suggest death.
The image is clearly been taken by a
CCTV camera which implies that the
events are factual and have actually
happened. It has been taken at night
which reflects typical horror conventions.
‘PARANORMAL ACTIVITY’ is written in
red which shows connotations of
blood and danger.
The tag line ‘DISCOVER HOW THE
ACTIVITY BEGAN’ attracts the fan
audience of the other Paranormal
Activity films.
