Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and came from a family known for teaching elocution. He developed methods for teaching the deaf to speak by watching lip movements and reading others. In 1871, he moved to Montreal and taught visible speech, then published his work in Washington D.C., helping thousands of deaf people learn to speak. In 1876, Bell patented the telephone and helped found the Bell Telephone Company, which later became AT&T, a major company today. His invention allowed for long-distance communication by telephone.
