Location and Geography
Egypt is in the northeast corner of
Africa. Look the map on the left.
Here you have the
Egyptian flag.
Egypt has the second longest river
in the world, the Nile river with
6.671 km, but most of Egypt is a
desert.
The ancient Egyptians created the pyramids
as burial tombs to honor their pharaohs and
they believe they were both man and god
and that the pyramid was the mean to get
to ‘another life’.
Pyramids
The ancient Egyptians
believed that there was a
life after dead and buried
the pharaohs with items to
use in the ‘other life’. There
were big treasures inside
the pyramids.
Tutankhamun treasure into his pyramid.
Pyramids at Giza.
Because the great wealth
inside the pyramid there were
a lot of thieves. Traps and
secret passages were built
inside a pyramid to catch
robbers.
The pyramids were decorated with paintings and
hieroglyphic. Some hieroglyphic were instructions for pass
testing for to the
other life.
Book of the Dead
One of the most important pharaohs was
Tutankhamun.
Tutankhamun was born at Akhetaten which
was the capital city of Egypt. He was born in
about the year 1346 BC.
He became pharaoh at the age of nine in 1337
BC and reigned during the 18th Dynasty.
Pharaohs
His tomb was discovered by a team of
British archaeologists in 1922, nearly
3000 years after his death.
The small tomb contained hundreds of
objects, decorated and covered in gold.
Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was one of
the most famous women in history.
She was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 69
BC. She reigned for 21 years– the year
she died.
In 48 BC. Cleopatra and Julius Caesar fell in love. They
had a child. Cleopatra visited Rome and stayed at one
of Caesar's country houses.
In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated and Cleopatra
returned to Egypt.
In 41 BC, Cleopatra and Marc Antony
met and fell in love. They had three
children.
After Mark Antony’s troops lost a
Battle Antony committed suicide.
Cleopatra followed and according to
tradition, she killed herself by letting
a poisonous snake, bite her on August
12, 30 BC.©
Clothing
The ancient Egyptians had to
have clothes that were not
too hot and let pass air
through to cool their bodies.
Clothes were made of linen
from the flax plants, that
grows up in 100 days. The
type and quality of the linen
depends on how rich the
person was.
Ancient Egyptian men wore
knee-length skirts, and
women wore ankle-length
tunics, and bracelets.
Children under 6 did not wear
clothes.
Important animals in ancient Egypt
The ancient Egyptian had many
domestic animals, but the most
preferred were cats, dogs, birds.
The cats were very important
because they thought they were
magical and protected their children
and their homes
