Spijkenisse is a town located in the western Netherlands in the province of South Holland. Archaeological research has shown the area around Spijkenisse has been inhabited for thousands of years by people who depended on fishing and hunting. Originally part of the Lord Putten fiefdom, Spijkenisse grew out of farming and fishing villages along the Oude Maas and suffered devastating fires in the 17th-18th centuries. After World War II, Spijkenisse was still modest in size but experienced heavy urban growth from the 1960s-1970s. The town is currently working to overcome its urban growth conditions through a comprehensive city plan project.
