2. Genre Choice
We have decided that the genre of our film will be aThriller-Romance film.
This is an interesting genre to work with, which is part of the reason we have chosen to
work with it.Another reason we have chosen this genre is because in the inpriations that
we have used for our own story, thrillers and romance are a much recurring theme.
3. Setting
The typical setting of aThriller-Romance is usually within a close
vicinity, and doesn’t really venture outside of small area. This could be
for example a small village, a college campus, or even just a house.
For example in one of our inspirations "Safe Haven" is around a cabin,
which is aThriller-Romance.
Another setting choice for example from another inspiration "The Boy
Next Door" is centered around a neighborhood (as said in the name,
next door neighbors).
Typically thrillers have to have some place where there are dark rooms
and scary corners, just so there can be some type of tension built, and
in a romance film there should be some kind of serene place where
there can be a romantic moment.
4. Characters
Stereotypical characters in the genre ofThrillers, usually there is a
protagonist and an antagonist, and in this case the girl would be the
protagonist and the man's alter ego would be the antagonist. The reason
there are those two stereotypical characters is because the conflict in the
thriller is caused by these two.
In a romance film there is obviously the two lovers, in this case, this being
the boy and the girl. These characters are needed because this is where the
romance is formed.
Other characters could include henchmen, a damsel character to be "saved"
or who is always getting herself into trouble. In our case, our female
character is only a damsel in the view that she is getting herself into trouble
and sticky situations, not that she is weak and needs saving.
5. Narrative
Usually in a thriller narrative.... Usually in a romance narrative....
Because the narrative of both of the genres we have chosen line up, they are good genres to choose
to work together because they storyline doesn’t need to be too heavily manipulated.
6. Iconography
When it comes to thrillers, it can change drastically. The location is always very important
and will determine the theme immediately, costumes and usually their color will
determine lots about a character too (for example the bad guy might where a black suit
but the good guy will wear normal clothes). Make up and hair are always very important
too and can determine a characters mood/attitude immediatley.
In a romance film however, there are different typical conventions. These include
voiceovers used to introduce characters or themes, a 'boy meets girl' story, emotional
topics or feelings, typical props which symbolize love (wedding bells, flowers, hearts etc.)
and usually with a romance film, it is used with another genre and isnt just simply a
romance film.
7. Style
Typically when looking at a thriller it has a very specific style, there are quick cuts,
shadows and lots of low key lighting, music used to build tension, lots of changes in
angles, diegetic sounds of breathing again used for tension, montage shots, possibly
black and white shots and always a constant conflict between the protagonist and the
antagonist.
In a romance film there is usually lots of red, pink, blue and white, all colors that carry love
bearing connotations, slow motion shots which are supposed to make people look
"sexy", voiceovers are used lots and there is always without fail usually a happy
ending.
