Louis Dodds-Rodgers describes the process of creating a documentary poster. He began by adding a bleed line and matte black background. He then imported a film reel and removed the black to add his own COVID-related images like NHS guidelines and statistics. These images were warped to fit the reel. Masked faces and an NHS worker image were also added. Finally, coronavirus spores were overlaid on the worker's face and a title was added in the 'Bebas' font to complete the poster.
2. Process
• Firstly for my poster design I
decided to add a portion which
would be considered a bleed line
just to make sure that all the
images I import onto the poster
will not be cut out incorrectly or
accidentally cropped.
• I then added a matte black colour
base. Instead of using pure black I
decided to add a matte overlay to
give a lighter connotation to the
message behind the poster and
documentary but still dark enough
to portray the correct emotions
and message to the viewer.
3. Process • I then came up with the idea to add a film
reel to my project which I imported with
the hope of it being interpreted as a
lookback over the year and how far we
have came since the first original
lockdown.
• After adding the reel on its own I decided
to use the magic wand tool to select all
the black parts of the reel and remove
them, making way for my own images.
• Following deleting the black reel which
filled the image I started importing my
own images such as; NHS COVID
guidelines, a member of the NHS, the
lockdown tier system and other things
such as statistics and the college. I
decided to do this because it further
reinforced my point about how far we
have come in the past year and how
much we have all worked through, as a
community and a civilisation.
• I managed to do this by importing images
that I wanted going onto the reel, then I
put them in place and began warping
them into place even more to help boost
the aesthetic appeal of my product. I did
this for every image and it took a long
time due to me wanting all the images to
fit perfectly in the reel.
4. Process
• In this part of editing my documentary
poster I decided to add a PNG of
people wearing masks to give the
viewers another bit of interpretation
towards my trailer. By adding this
image onto my product I am making it
clear that we are all diverse characters
and all individually different in many
ways but at this moment in time we
are all fighting for the same thing.
Which unites us as a civilisation.
• I managed to add this PNG by finding
it on google and then using the magic
wand to select and remove all of the
unwanted black background. Due to
my background being black it messed
up the magic wand a bit so after I had
erased all the selected parts I went
over it with an eraser to make sure
there was no different shades of black
leftover as this would effect the
aesthetic of my poster.
5. Process • I then decided to add
worker for the NHS which
I found online, I added
this because I wanted to
make sure to add
someone who is trying
their best to battle the
situation we are currently
in.
• When I first added her in
it was a fully coloured
image but then I decided
to give it more effect I
would change half of the
image to grey to make it
look a bit more
aesthetically appealing
and related to the
coronavirus as it can be
interpreted that the NHS
are losing their lives
protecting us.
6. Process
• To finish off my poster I started
adding the coronavirus spore to the
right of the image to show the
actual virus itself to create an effect
on the viewers which will make
them think of it negatively and
proceed to watch my trailer with
more insight to what it is about.
• Originally I decided to add them just
to the right and spread the spores
out a bit but as I went on I decided
it would be a good idea to add the
spores over the lady from the NHS’
face to give more connotations of
the effects of the virus on the NHS.
• I did this by going into the image
setting on Photoshop and then
selecting black and white and I
edited it accordingly. I then copied
and pasted each spore and edited
the size and placement.
7. Process • Finally to finish of
my product I added
a title onto the
poster and a small
credit to myself at
the top.
• I chose the font
‘Bebas’ due to
seeing it on a few
other
documentaries and
other forms of
media which
needed a more
serious font adding.
I believe this font
fits my image
perfectly as it has
the right amount of
boldness on it and
also helps put over a
message compared
to other fonts.
