2. Existing Product
The image is an action shot from the game street
fighter, the location is somewhere in Asia as
portrayed by a dojo themed building behind the
characters the colour scheme is quite bright as
the sprites are wearing colourful outfits but the
scene is set at night time giving it a contrast of
colours.
The set angle for this game and will
most likely be the same for my game is
face on this gives the effect of viewing
the fight head on leaving the player
being only able to move from left and
right due to the perspective.
The lighting used in this particular
image is quite dark around the actual
background scene whereas the centre
characters are well lit providing them
both with the players main focus. The
avatars are both dressed in traditional
Asian karate themed robes to give the
impression that the game revolves
around hand to hand combat. The font
used to display the names and the
‘K.O’ sign are simplistic blocky
characters with a simple block colour
and fade on this design looks neat and
polishes and the font fits in with the
pixelized design of the game.
This appeals to the games target audience as it includes
violence without graphic imagery, a neat set of colours
and animation style and also can appeal to younger and
older generations as the game is a remake of the original
arcade streetfighter.
3. Existing Product Tekken 6 has a similar look to the
streetfighter series but different mechanics
as Tekken features more freedom with the
POV and angles you can play from. The
lighting in the Tekken franchise is more
limited compared to streetfighter as the
settings usually reflect the characters which
is a feature I will be using in my game.
The natural lighting in the game is quite
limited as a lot of the settings are dimly lit
outdoor scenes. Tekken uses a lot of
different in game mechanics compared to
other arcade fighting games, compared to
street fighter Tekken includes weapons and
other props making the game more open to
its audience giving them more choice. The
costumes in Tekken 6 are more
customisable making the game more open,
the general costumes used in the Tekken
series differ per character some in boxing
attire and some In more traditional karate
robes similar to street fighter.
The fonts used in the screenshot I took from
Tekken 6 are similar to most arcade fighter
games in an 8bit style giving the traditional
arcade aesthetic.
This game appeals to its audience as it sticks
to the classic arcade fighter game aesthetic
as the game is rated 12 it does not contain
graphic violence but is still entertaining for
older players due to the fact it maintains
several old school arcade fighter mechanics.
4. Existing Product The image is head on once again to give the
perspective of seeing both sides, in Mortal
Kombat’s more recent releases such as
number 11 you can move more freely like in
the Tekken franchise this creates a lot of
diversity in this game compared to other
arcade classics like streetfighter. The location in
this particular scene is dimly lit and has very
limited natural lighting creating a more intense
atmosphere.
The image is composed by two characters caught
mid attack with each other with a shady backdrop
which appears to be an Asian dojo, the characters
costumes are very different and are customisable
giving the player a lot of freedom making the game
more accessible, from the colours we see the
characters wearing we can deduct the one in white
is a stereotypical ‘good’ character and on the right
in red is a villain shown through his blood red robe.
There is no text on the screen showing the game is
shown to be more simplistic and more focused on
the enhanced graphics.
This game appeals to its audience which in the case
of this game is a more mature audience due to the
fact it is rated 18 because of the heavy violence and
graphic imagery it does this by keeping the graphics
current and high resolution and keeping the game
concept current too by adding DLC’s in which you
can purchase characters which aren’t in the base
game such as Alien and Predator from the older
films predator and alien. The games main audience
is male as most of the characters are men and the
vast majority of female characters are over
sexualised whilst the male characters are appeal
more to the theory of hegemonic masculinity.
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
• Some common features my researched games include is a similar
8bit font creating the aesthetic of an arcade game. Another
common feature in some of the researched games is the character
design, in Tekken and street fighter the animation style was a lot
simpler compared to mortal Kombat.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on
work?
• I will include several aspects from my different research projects
such as the character design and 8bit settings to give my product a
vintage arcade fighter game which will appeal to several different
audiences.
