2. The 1975 are a British indie rock band who formed in Manchester. The band
consists of Matthew Healy (vocals and guitar), George Daniel (drums), Adam
Hann (guitar) and Ross MacDonald (bass). The band have released Four Eps
and an album which reached number 1 in the UK album charts. The band have
released nine singles throughout the years 2012 to now (2015). However, the
band have released many music videos onto their official YouTube and also
their VEVO page. The song which I have chosen (Milk) does not have an official
video.
3. As indie rock is my favourite genre of music and The 1975 are one of my
favourite bands, I believe that this gives me the opportunity to create a music
video to the best of my ability as I am aware of genre characteristics and the
bands identity which they display throughout most of their music videos.
Indie rock genre conventions
• Low budget
• Set in simplistic places that can be easily accessed
• Mise en scene – Indie artists usually have a retro/identifiable look about them which sets them apart from
other artists from different genres such as the pop genre and displays the genre of their music.
• Most indie rock videos hold a narrative whilst others are just performance based and some even have elements
of each.
• Most indie rock music videos include close-ups to show off the star/band in the performance whilst also
showing emotion In narrative terms, medium shots, point of view shots, mid shots and establishing shots are
also popular.
• Black and white is a very popular choice for indie rock music videos when it comes to editing as it can make the
video emotive whereas The 1975 usually use it for brand identity.
4. The Narrative
‘’Milk’’ is a song about a female who has become
addicted to the drug cocaine as she is trying to
mend her broken heart. As a lot of The 1975’s
video are highly illustrative and display the song
through narrative, I would like to continue this
running theme. My current idea for the song
would be to display the girl and her addiction to
the drug in line with the song. Minimal lip syncing
will feature throughout the video as the band
rarely appear in their own videos and therefore
milk will have no performance base in the video.
The actress will just lip sync parts of the song
which are written about what the female has said.
The 1975’s lead singer, Matthew Healy doesn’t
really lip sync in his own videos and this can be
seen in “Settle Down” and “Robbers”. He is one of
the actors but does not lip sync and I think I
should include this in my video so that it again
keeps the bands brand identity.
5. Actors
‘’Milk’’ will feature a female protagonist, a dealer
at a house party with some background actors and
also another female actress who will be much
older than the main actress as she will be
portraying when she’s older but we will not see
her face. Throughout the video, a males name will
appear onto a mobile phone but we will not see
an appearance from him.
6. Costume
The main female actress will ideally resemble Effy
Stonem (Kaya Scodelario) from Skins. Therefore
the actress will have similar grungy clothing with a
dark make-up look and messy hair. This also
reflects the indie genre as many girls dress similar
to Effy and some even see her as an icon.
7. Camera
The video will feature close-ups to display
emotion, establishing shots/extreme wide shots
to show off the setting, wide shots to show the
actress in full frame, mid shots to show the
actress In more detail, medium close ups, point of
view shots to show what the actress is seeing/give
the effect of the audience experiencing what she
is and over the shoulder shots to show the
actress’ mobile phone and the dealer giving the
actress her drugs with a cut in and also at the end
to show the other actresses prop for narrative
purposes.
9. Props
‘’Milk’’ will feature money, a bag of a fake
substance, make-up, a mobile phone, a photo
frame and a necklace. This will all be for narrative
purposes.
