Dynamics of Destructive Polarisation in Mainstream and Social Media: The Case...
Questionnaire results
1. Questionnaire Results
From my questionnaire on Survey Monkey, I found that it was mainly the age
group of 15-18 that didn’t buy many music magazines. I also found that the
most popular genre of magazine that was bought is Rock, with Indie coming up
as another alternative that they prefer. I also found that the most popular
thing that people look for when buying magazines was the artist or band that is
featured. I then found that the people that do buy music magazines, only ever
buy on around once a month, and so this helps me decide how often my music
should be released. When it came to anything that they would like to be
featured in this magazine, it was quite a mixed response, with 3 people saying
they would like competitions to be included in music magazines, 3 people
saying they would like posters, and 4 people saying they would like exclusive
information including interviews and blogs. Most of the people said that they
would like a good picture, and information about what will be included in that
issue of the magazine. I also found out that no one would buy a magazine
based purely on its title; this tells me that I need to actually make the whole of
it look appealing, rather than just spending ages trying to think of a good
name. When I asked the question, whether or not you would buy a magazine
even if it had stereotypically the ‘wrong’ colour for the sex, for example, having
pink on a lad’s mag, I found that half of them would but half of them wouldn’t.
The majority of people said that they would buy a music magazine that just
featured one genre of music, and only a small number said they wouldn’t. The
last question that was asked, about how much you would be willing to pay for
a normal music magazine, I found that the average answer was £2-£3.
I think taking into account of all of the information that I gained from my
survey; it is enough for me to try and produce a magazine that I know the age
range it is aimed for will like and enjoy.
2. Colour Schemes
These three colours I think work really well together, the dark colours put
together make it look more male dominant, but the use of purple also
shows that it can be for women as well. I think the grey contrasts with the
two different shades of purple and this would be a good colour scheme for
a music magazine.
These three colours I think are more aimed for the male audience, the
two greens look good next to the yellow, and I think these particular
magazine would look better on an Indie genre of magazine. Although
Indie is a type of genre that could be for either sex, I think it would
depend on the colours used on the cover.
These three colours are definitely aimed for the male audience,
although I do think these colours would look good on a pop
magazine, which usually is more aimed at a female audience, so
these colours could be seen as a more unisex scheme.
These three colours are obviously stereotypically more aimed for
girls, I think these colours would also look good on a pop magazine,
and definitely attract the attention of girls probably ages around 12-
15. Although some colours schemes including this one can restrict
what type of demographic buy the product, I think these colours
could definitely be used on a ‘girly’ feature.
3. Research into Institutions
Bauer Media
I found that Bauer Media produce Q magazine. This magazine, which features
indie style music, is the genre of magazine, which I would like to produce. The
demographic that Bauer media cater for range, from men and women, to
young teenage girls and boys. It ranges from magazine to magazine and so is
obviously a very popular company as it produces magazines, which are known
widely. I also found out that Bauer Media own some well-known TV channels
such as Kerrang! And Kiss. With this, they own the radio stations that go with
them as well. They also own well-known magazine websites like Closer and
Grazia. I found that Bauer media is also a sister company to the well-known H
Bauer Publishing and are branched out extremely widely.
IPC Media
The next institution that I found out about was IPC Media. They own the very
widely known NME Magazine. NME is known for its indie style featured stories
bands and interviews. It is famous for having very famous artists included
which is the reason why it makes it loved by a wide demographic. I found that
the main demographic IPC Media cater for is either young women who like to
read gossip/real life magazines, and also the teenage audience. IPC, like Bauer
owns a number of websites mainly for the magazines in which they also
produce. I think that IPC own more magazine companies compared to Bauer,
but Bauer own more TV Channels and radio stations.
