This radio drama adaptation of The Hunger Games tells the story of what would happen if Primrose Everdeen, rather than her sister Katniss, was selected at the reaping and entered the Hunger Games. The adaptation is split into 7, 20-minute episodes that will air weekly on BBC Radio 1 at 6:00pm. Primrose is 12 years old and much more fragile than her older sister. Her approach to the games seeks to find peace and beauty, changing how others view the events. While Katniss is unable to volunteer in Primrose's place, she works outside the games with their friend Gale to support Primrose through her experience in the arena.
2. SUMMERY& GENRE
• The radio drama is an adaptation of the Hunger Games, the first film of the franchise where
originally in the reaping Primrose Everdeen was selected as a tribute, however her sister
Katniss Everdeen volunteered instead.
• In this adaption the Hunger Games don't allow Katniss to volunteer and Primrose does go
into the Hunger Games instead.
• The whole process and outcome of Primrose going into the Hunger Games compared to
Katniss differs completely.
• The genre of the radio drama couldn't just be narrowed down to one as there are many
aspects of the radio programme that make it different genres.
• For example the storyline of the radio programme would categorized as a drama with what
happens.
• However with the mystical essence involved in the adaptation it would also be classed as a
fantasy.
• Plus because of the hunger games itself and what happens in there, this adaptation would
also be classed as action and adventure.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE
• The target audience for this adaptation would be the same target audience as the
Hunger Games as people who watch the Hunger Games would understand this
adaptation but would also want to see the film in a different perspective/situation.
• This adaption is good for the target audience as it doesn't really change much
manually in a sense just the one thing- which is that Primrose goes into the hunger
games instead of Katniss and that in itself changes circumstances automatically so
this twist would interest the audience because its the whole idea of what if Katniss
volunteered, but the capitol didn't let her swap places with her sister.
4. CHARACTER PROFILES.
• Primrose: She would be the central character here as she is the one going in the Hunger Games.
She is 12 years old, so she is very young, rather petite but also very fragile. She is very caring and
likes to see beauty and peace in all things and her approach to the hunger games also changes
the way other people view things too.
•
Katniss: Although she tried to protect her sister through volunteering which failed she still tries
her best to protect Primrose from outside the games. Katniss is about 17, average height, she is
rather strong due to the fact that she had to look after her sister and mom when their farther
died as their mother struggled to cope with this. She is a good hunter and cares a lot about her
little sister.
•
Peter: He is the other tribute that is selected from district 12. Quite small, works at his mother
bakery, a little bit of an outsider.
•
Gale: Katniss's best friend, he helps her support Primrose during the hunger Games. Rather tall,
has a little bit of a muscular body, he like Katniss looks after his family and is also a good hunter.
5. SCHEDULE INFORMATION
• The radio drama would be broadcasted on radio 1. This is because the radio station
is listened to by a much younger audience who would be the ideal target audience
for my adaptation and who would have watched the original Hunger games
franchise.
• The adaptation will be split into 7, 20 minute episodes which will play out the whole
drama which will be played over the whole week on the radio at 6:00pm. This will
the be available on BBC I player for people who missed it or who want to listen to it
again.
