2. What I like about the opening.
• What I like about the opening is how they
show how katniss’s life was before the reaping
was. It demonstrates how they had to grow up
so quickly in order to survive. It also gives you
a small insight to what the film is about
without giving it all away.
3. How it feeds into the rest of the film.
• Katniss and Gale discuss in the opening scene the
upcoming events in the film. For example when
Katniss promises Prim she won’t get picked for the
arena as her name isn’t hardly in the reaping and the
miners going to work whereas in the film we learn
how much the mines really did mean to Katniss
considering her dad died working there.
4. Textual analysis.
• Camera shots – The shots used in the hunger games
are mainly hand held shots to make the scene feel
more realistic and when the actors run it sets the
scene more. A pan shot is used when Katniss tries
and shoots the dear in the very first scene. There is
also plenty of close up to see the actors emotions.
5. Textual analysis.
• Sound – There is a mixture of non-diegetic and
diegetic sound.
• Editing – There is cross cutting used between
scenes to go from the present to the past. This
is clever because it gives us a background
story on characters which could be helpful
when it comes to empathising with them later
on in the film.
6. Textual analysis.
• The mise-en-scene used is used in a clever
way because the film is based in the hunger
games universe and their costumes they wear
really do represent where they come from.
7. How has it introduced the characters?
• It has introduced the characters by having it
on the day of the reaping so that straight away
the film gets into the action. This then shows
us how they respond as characters and gives
us an in look on how they will be towards the
film.
8. How has it introduced the plot?
• It has introduced the plot by having the
opening scene on reaping day. Once they are
at the reaping Effie shows them all a video on
why the have the hunger games and gives us
as an audience an in look on Panems past and
why it is like what it is today.
9. How has it introduced the theme?
• The Hunger Games is a 2012 American science
fiction adventure film. It’s introduced the
theme by straight away going into the reaping.
This show that it’s unrealistic as it would never
happen in real life.
10. • It has undercut expectations by making the
film similar to the book. So those who have
read the book wont be disappointed. It has
introduced a eerie atmosphere/tone because
if you haven’t read the book you don’t know
what to expect also the diegetic soundtrack
gives it that feel.
11. Finally.. How has it hooked the
audience?
• It has hooked the audience by Katniss taking
Prims place in the arena. It then makes you
emotionally attached to the character and
makes you want to watch on to find out
whether Katniss will survive the arena.
