3. Research
• What were the strengths of your research?
– One strength was that it gave me was, the chance to look at other products and adapt on
those ideas; so it wasn’t a copy of other peoples products.
• How did your research help your product?
– It helped it because it gave me some ideas to do that will help in the final product.
– One idea it gave me was for the video. My researched video product had animations on.
This helped me open my ideas and be more creative in my work. I added slow motion,
filters and writing.
– Another idea it gave me was to combine the masthead with the main image. Putting the
main image person in front of the masthead and the rest of the image behind.
– The logo gave me the idea to combine the logo with something to do with skating.
• What were the weaknesses of your research?
– I didn’t look thougherly through the internet for some good products.
• What could you have done better/improve?
– I could have looked through the internet more and found some more photos.
• What effect would this have had on your product?
– I would have different ideas to adapt on that could have been better.
4. Planning
• What were the strengths of your planning?
– One strength of my planning was that I got the chance to pick the style of the product. For this one I
chose to do fonts. This helped in my skate magazine a lot as I got a chance to see which one would
work and wouldn’t. another strength would be that I got the chance to plan out my magazine and to
see where all my writing/ pictures will go. Also I got the chance to plan for all the contingencies in my
planning.
• How did your planning help your product?
• It helped it a lot because I had the chance to plan potential things before they actually happened. It
was good because it lifted a lot of weight off my shoulders. It helped me think off things before I
actually put them in my final product and it also helped me plan the contingencies.
• What were the weaknesses of your planning?
• One weakness was that I felt that it was a waste of time and this made me not actually think
thourerly through all of it.
• What could you have done better/improve?
• I could have concentrated more throughout the work and thought of more things to say before I
tackled it in the actual product.
• What effect would this have had on your product?
• It made my final planning not as thought through as I didn’t think of good enough things to plan
out.
5. Time Management
• Did you manage your time well?
– I did not manage my time well.
• Did you complete your project on time or would your products have improved with additional
time?
– No I didn’t complete my final product on time as I did not realise how long it would take. My first struggle was
finding time to gather my clips, it was hard getting the clips in time due to weather, as it was rainy and for
skateboarding it is hard to get clips in the rain. Also it was hard to land some really good tricks for the time
given so I decided to film a friend on a skate board as he is a better skater. However that was pretty good as it
gave me chance to think about the whole edit and picture it all coming together in my head. In the end I just
filmed him doing some cool tricks that were not that hard and use my filming/editing skills to make them look
good.
– Yes I would have improved my product with additional time as I would have had chance to land some cool
tricks myself and also feature other people. Also my logo, magazine and skate deck would have been improved
but I spent more time on the video part of my project as I thought it was the most important.
• What would you have done if you had more time to produce your work?
– I would have spent more time on my logo, magazine and skate deck. My logo was pretty dull to be honest.
Even though it was not an need to my project I still made a logo as it makes everything look more professional,
as I learnt in my research.
– My magazine could have been a lot better, I chose to have it with just a masthead, a main image and a sub
heading of the skaters name. This was because it looked a lot ‘cleaner’. It was also because it was the fastest
way to do things.
– My skate deck was also rushed, however I am pretty happy with it as it goes with the company name. if I would
have had more time I would have done more research and chose better colour scheme.
6. Technical Qualities
• Compare your work to similar existing products and discuss the similarities and differences
• Put your final piece(s) in the centre of a page alongside an existing product
• Use text boxes and arrows
They both have a
image as the main
feature on the deck.
They both have the
writing on the top
right of the image.
However mine is
my logo
I have more of a
wooden feel to
the base of my
deck. This is
because of the
different shades
of blue.
They have
more of a
matte colour
to the base
of their deck.
This is
because of
the bold
white colour.
They have
their logo on
the bottom
of their deck.
7. Technical Qualities
I have writing in the
middle of the screen for
a comedic effect, as this
is from a video game.
(not copy righted). Mine
is not meant to be part
of the video.
The editing in this is
meant to be part of
the video. It is for
dramatic effect in this
video.
Both have a
colourful setting
(in this screen
shot its black
and white
because of the
effect).
8. Technical Qualities
Both just has, an
image, masthead and
the skaters name.
The
masthead is
not meant to
look like it is
part of the
image
because I
wanted the
exaggerate
the size of
the stairs.
The
masthead
is meant
to look
like it is
part of
the
image.
The picture was taken
from further away to
exaggerate the size of
the stair set.
The picture was taken close
up to show what he is doing
in the trick. He is also
wearing yellow to stand out
Meant to look like it is
part of the image.
This is more of a stamp
image so it stands out.
9. Aesthetic Qualities
• Does your work look good? Was it creative? What aspects of your game’s visuals do you
like? What would you improve? How would you improve it?
• Discuss the strengths and weaknesses
• Put your final piece(s) in the centre of a page and analyse them
• Use text boxes and arrows
I like how I put the
logo on the top of the
side picture. A strength
is that people would
know what brand it is.
This is good so when
someone buys the
board they will be
contently advertising.
However a weakness
would be that the
colors don’t really
match
I think this looks
good because my
brand is ‘diabolus’
which means
devil in Latin.
There is a devil
and a goat which
is all relatable.
However if I had
more time I
would have made
some designs
myself.
10. Aesthetic QualitiesThis part of the
video is really
good as it has a
really good
comedic effect to
it. It could have a
weakness though
as it breaks the
flow of the video
but, the music is
still in time. I
would not want
to try and
improve this as I
think the comedic
effect with the
‘wasted’ sign is
really good as it
references a
popular video
game (GTA 5).
Overall my video looks really good and
smooth. This is because when I was filming
thought i tried to think of the timing of the
skate tricks and the music. I think this was
perfect. Even though I had good timing my
video was pretty short.
My logo is in the top right and it is used for
Advertisement purposes. It also makes the video
look more professional. The only weakness I have is that
It is a bit plain as it is just a font. To improve I would have
Spent more time on a logo design than just a font.
There where a few
moments in my
video where I used
special effects
such as slow
motion and zoom
ins. These were
good the
emphasize the
dramatics of my
video. To improve I
would spend more
time working on
animations that
can be
implemented into
the video
11. Aesthetic Qualities
I purposely didn’t put
anything around the
skater because I
wanted to emphasize
the scale of the stairs.
However it does look
pretty plain and I think
I could have
implemented some
things in there such
as, a price tag,
advertisement
(sponsors) or, some
sub images of what is
also in the magazine.
I think that my mast head looks
pretty good as the main name
‘Diabolus’ is larger than the
‘skate board magazine 'part.
This is better then people will
know what they are buying.
One thing I would improve is
the fact that the main image is
not all the way up. I would
have placed a background
there to blend it in.
Here is the skaters name. I
tried to put it on an angle
so it blended with the
image but it didn’t work.
To improve I would make
it fully blend with the
back wall with a different
font.
12. Audience Appeal
• How have you appealed to your target audience? What specific bits of content would appeal
to your target audience.
• Refer to your findings from your questionnaire.
• Put your final piece(s) in the centre of a page and analyse them
• Use text boxes and arrows
My target
audience is 16 to
24, the most
common age
group in my
survey. I put a
devil in the
skateboard image,
not just for
relevance with the
name of the
brand, but for the
audience
13. Audience Appeal
In my survey
they said that a
4 minutes video
would be the
best. However I
did not have
enough clips to
get 4 minutes
worth of
footage.
In my survey I
had people asking
me for a ‘good
flow of different
scenes’. I did this
buy having a few
different scenes
with all different
effects. Also by
linking the audio
with the video.
In my survey I had people asking me for
‘slow Motion closeup’ I achieved this by
zooming into the feet of the skater when he
landed a sketchy trick. I did this for comedic
effect. Throughout the whole video I used
slow motion to emphasize tricks.
Throughout my
whole video I had
fading shots,
which was also
asked for on my
survey, that made
a smooth
transition
between clips.
Another thing
that was asked
was to use filters.
I did this when I
used the black
and white filter.
14. Audience Appeal
In my survey most
people said that
the image of a
skate magazine
attracts them to a
magazine, because
of this I tried to
emphasis the
image as much as
possible but not
putting anything
else around and to
exaggerate the
scale of the stairs.
16. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The consistency of the branding is clear and all the products have a clear
theme and tie together as a media package.
– The camerawork is steady and the editing choices are thought out and synced
to the audio well.
– The magazine reflects the conventions of the genre.
– The deck design used images that are consistant with existing products.
• What improvements could have been made to the product?
• The video is slowly paced and could have done with a build up of action
and tension in the content and audio to draw the audience in.
• The magazine would have appealed to a wider audience with use of a
selling line and basic information such as issue numbers and pricing.
• The deck design could have been edited with more precision and thought
to create a more realistic and united design with the images and text into
one final graphic.
17. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the video product as it showed some good content and the beat was matching to
the tricks
– I also like the skateboard deck design as it has an artsy feel
– The skateboard magazine design looks very professional
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
• I think that the skateboard design could be more slick with the board as in blend the images and the name
to make it look more realistic I also think that magazine should have a price and an issue number
18. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the video as I like the music syncs with the video
– I like the colour of the skateboard as it has a wood effect
– I like the writing on the magazine as it draws attention the
the name brand.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– Everything could be improved with more writing for
example the skateboard doesn’t have much writing neither
does the magazine.
19. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– I agree that the skate design could be a bit more slick
as it doesn’t really look like the design is meant to be
on that board.
– I also agree that my music syncs with the video.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– I dis agree with the one who said that everything
needs improving.
20. Peer Feedback Summary
I would make the skateboard design look more slick by adding writing and trying to
blend it all in. also I would add more writing and sub headings to my skateboard
magazine to make it look more professional.
