Existing Product
This product is based in a haunted
castle, which fits in really well with
pixel art as the bricks are all
squares, unlike mine which is based
in a graveyard. The castle is good
because it is quite a scary location
which is good as it’s a survival
horror pixel game. This would be
good because there were not many
castle survival horrors when this
came out. Altogether there is quite
a dark and dangerous felling
towards the whole castle. Which
might lure customers into the game
because it seem hard.
The angle they have
used is a 3rd person side
angle (side scroller).
This is the angle that I
will be using for my
product as well. This is a
good angle for a pixel
game because you can
see everything that is
going on around the
character. This would
make people want to
buy the game because
it looks really good 3rd
person with a side
angle.
The font they have
used is a pixel font
which works really
well as it is a pixel
game. The font
colour is yellow and
red, there is red at
the bottom and
yellow at the top.
The red is there to
show lava. This is
good because there
is lava in in the
game.
The character is
wearing a red costume
to show that there is
danger going towards
the green character.
Normally the bad guy
is wearing red but
they have switched it
around. You can tell
the green character is
the bad guy because
he is throwing fireballs
at the red guy and
fireballs are normally
associated with
danger.
These props are all red because it
is a horror game and red is
normally associated with danger.
Existing Product
The product is
based in a grave
yard, like mine. A
graveyard is quite
good for a pixel
game because
most of the
cemetery stones
are square. All of
the grounds are
different heights.
They did tis by
making them
square and
adding boxes in to
jump up, this
makes it more
challenging to the
customers.
The characters in the products have
square heads, so it is easy to make.
The props in the
product work
really well with
the surrounding
environment
because the skulls
and head stones
are really
represent death.
The font for the
title is in 3D this
is good because
emphasizes the
title a lot more.
Also the tile is
yellow and
everything
around the title
dark so the title
stands out a lot
more for the
audience it
stands out more.
The product is
3rd person and it
is a side scroller.
The product has a set background which is really good
because you can change the background as the character
moves. It would look good because it would actually look
like the character is moving along.
Existing ProductIn this product
they have used
a vignette to
make the
whole screen
look a lot
darker. This is
so the screen
does not look
bright as it is a
grave yard.
In the actual area
where the character
can walk. There is moss
between the bricks.
This is good because it
brings an older feel to
the location, which is
good because it is a
graveyard and they are
old.
This product has
squiggled out writing on
the grave stones. This is
because they cannot put
the writing in the pixels.
There are gravestone props in the
middle of the screen which really
emphasize the fact that it’s a gloomy
graveyard. Without the gravestones
customers would just think that it is
a room mad out of bricks
The whole
grave yard is
made out of
pixel bricks.
This is
because it is
easy to make.
The character is made out of pixels
And it has a weird shape but it looks
quite good because it is really detailed
for a pixel person.
The whole angle of
the game is on like
a 45 degrees angle.
This is good
because you are
able to make 3d
rooms but on a 2d
pixel game.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– All of the products are all pixel games.
– They are all in dark places and have a scary feeling to them.
– The 1st game and the 2nd one both are side scrollers.
– The 3rd one and the 1st one both are made out of bricks so it is easier to make
because the bricks are square.
– In the first one and the second one there are titles
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
– I will make my game a pixel a game because that is what I have to do anyway
– I will make my game look and feel dark by using dark colours and vignettes
– I will make my game a side scroller as it looks a lot better and it is a lot easier
to design.
– I will use bricks in some levels but in others I wont so I can have some
freedom in my work.
– I will only use a title to say what level the player is on, but in-between the
levels I will have a title for promotional reasons.
