1.0 Introduction
1.1 Module Objective
This internship is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and
operations involved in working in architectural / construction practices. The purpose
is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural
practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and
procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the
Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the process of authority
submission for various drawings from an architectural practice and the range of
contract documentation produced to support these drawings. Via a full-time
internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation and report-
writing skills required of an employee in a typical architect’s firm.

3.0 Training Program
3.1 Training Program Schedule
There is no proper schedule for internship training in Paradigm Architects. We are
either assigned to our main supervisor, Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan or other co-workers to
complete given task.
3.2 Projects
3.2.1 Car Park Canopy, Horizon Hills
Overview
Site location : Bandar Nusajaya, Mukim Pulai Daerah
Specification : Residential Apartment
Supervisor : Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan
Task : Car Park Canopy design proposal
Duration : 6th
January – 9th
January (2 working days)
Horizon Hills is a residential project under Paradigm Architects. This project has
many different phases which consist of semi-detached houses, condominiums,
apartments, etc. The particular phase I was focusing on for this task was a
completed 380 storey apartment for phase 4C. After construction of Phase 4C, the
clients realized the need of a car park canopy at the ingress and egress of the
apartment’s car park as shown in Figure 1.0. Without a canopy in place, there will be
no shelter against rain for residents to swipe their cards at the card reader upon
entering and exiting the car park.

Overview
Site location : Bandar Nusajaya, Mukim Pulai Daerah
Specification : Canopy
Supervisor : Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan
Task : Car Park Canopy design proposal 2
Duration : 20th
February – 22th
February (3 working days)
As the first design proposal for the car park canopy in Horizon Hills was rejected by
the client as the client prefers a less skeletal frame structured design and would
prefer something elevated of the ground, I have been instructed by Ar. Teoh Eng
Kuan to design 2 more options for the client. Under his supervision, I have managed
to create 2 more proposal options for the client.

As shown in Figure 1.7 above, our initial concept for this center was to create a
sense of balance between the sizable indoor café, kitchen spaces and the gym,
shower room spaces divided by a central walkway which acts as an axis which
separates the 2 sections. The rectangular frames acts as visual screening from the
busy highway.

Figure 1.10 shows the final design proposal layout of spaces
As shown in Figure 1.10, the concept for our final proposal did not differ much as we
still kept the concept of balance between 2 sections divided by an axis. However, the
initial idea of the axis being a central walkway was replaced with a sunken lounge
with water features and a tree in the center. We have also included an outdoor café
in this recreational center.

Learning Outcome:
Through this project, my colleague and I were given a very great opportunity to
design our very own building which may be built in the near future. This project has
also led me to study more about the Uniform Building by Laws, UBBL which plays an
important role in architecture as it ensures the comfort and safety of the occupants
and how the rules instituted make sense to an architectural design. For example, I
now have a more in depth understanding about the handicap requirements for a
recreational center as well as the fire protection systems needed for a building.
Furthermore, I have also grasp the methods of gross and net area tabulation of a
building through this project.

Learning Outcome:
Through this project, I now understand that there are more than one type of TNB
substation namely, 2 chamber substations or 3 chamber substations. For this
particular project, the area requires a 3 chamber substation which means it consist of
2 transformer chambers and 1 switchgear room whereas a 2 chamber substation
only has 1 transformer chamber and 1 switchgear room. I have also learned about
the requirements for a substation in terms of the size, height and type of vent blocks
used, the setback distance, etc.

4.0 Conclusion
I carried out my internship at Paradigm Architects, a firm that I selected to be
part of my learning process in architecture after contacting with main supervisor, Ar.
Teoh Eng Kuan. As a fresh employee who was lack of practical experience, I was
and still am thankful for being given fair amount of jobs and obtained a lot of
guidance from my supervisor and co-workers. I am thankful to my supervisor and co-
workers who spent a lot of time to share his or her experience and impart the
construction and design knowledge to me personally. Throughout the internship
training, I could perceive more about the definition of being an architect and its social
position which allow me to prepare myself to become an innovative and responsible
architect in future. Along my training period, I realize that a strong observation skill is
required to tackle the problems I encountered with. Moreover, the projects indirectly
lead me to become more independent, considerate and self-confident. Other than
that, I have no doubt gained more knowledge in terms of technicality and
requirements in design. Besides that, this internship has given me the opportunity to
learn new software skills as well as giving me a chance to design and build my own
designs in the real world.
All in all, I have realized the significance as follows:
- Time Management
Architects are always racing against time to meet deadlines and packed schedules,
a proper adjustable and flexible time management will minimize facing overdue
deadlines. It helps reduce time wastage and in turn gives us more time and the
possibility to check and improve our work.
- Critical and Analytic Thinking
In order to organize our task and assignment, we need to analyze our problems and
formulate a good solution to the problems. We would have to set contingency plans
for the solution, so that we are well prepared for the unforeseeable situations.
- Communication
In any working environment, teamwork is vital in contributing to a strong
organization. Thus, communicating and sharing is much needed in the working
environment.
