1.0 Introduction
1.1 General Purpose of Study
The internship training aimed at introducing students to the requirements,
activities and operations involved in working in architectural / construction practices.
This purpose is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to
architectural practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature,
principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings,
especially the Building by-Laws.
Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for
various drawing from an architectural practice and the range of contract
documentation produced to support these drawings. Via a full-time internship
attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation and report-writing
skills required of an employee (architectural assistant / architect) in a typical
architect’s firm.

1.2 Working Environment
1.2.1 Company Profile
Paradigm Architects Sdn Bhd was incorporated in 1995 with an overriding
objective to provide truly professional service for full range of architectural services.
Paradigm Architects specializes in the design of high end residential communities and
individual designed houses. The firm is located at the heart of Dataran Ara Damansara,
Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Paradigm Architects is currently cooperating with Sime
Darby Property to enhance and promote the development of new townships area, for
example, Bandar Ainsdale, in Seremban. Paradigm Architects has become known for
designing amazing projects which are affordable and practicality.
1.2.2 Period of Training
The total period of internship training covered 8 weeks from 3rd
January
2017 to 10th
March 2017. Students are required to submit their internship
training report on Wednesday, 8th
March 2017.
1.2.3 Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m
(Lunch Hour : 1:00p.m. to 2:00p.m.)

2.0 General Scope of Training
The overall task and practice carried during the internship would be related to-

3.0 Training Program
3.1 Training Program Schedule
There is no proper schedule for internship training in Paradigm Architects. We are required
to finish the work assigned within the given amount of time.
3.2 Projects
3.2.1 Gazebo Design
Overview
Site Location : Denai Alam, Shah Alam
Specification : Gazebo for a new township
Mentor : Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan / Mr Ken Chan
Task : Gazebo Design Proposal
Denai Alam is a planned township located approximately 10km north of Shah Alam,
alongside the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. I was assigned to modify and further develop
the façade with affordable construction cost within the budget and propose a new design
based on client’s comment.
I was given a couple of days to propose a developed design using the software, Sketch
Up. Mr. Ken Chan guided me along way through as I was still new to Sketch Up, while Ar.
Teoh follow up my progress daily to catch up my progress.

Learning Outcome :
Throughout this project, I am able to enhance my software skills for Sketch Up
and get to know some new shortcuts which I have never learnt before.
Ar. Teoh comments: Not practical, as vent blocks are heavy and cannot be supported on
roof area and looks bulky as per client’s comment.

Ar. Teoh comments: Too expensive, over client’s budget as I beams are very
expensive but looks lightweight and modern.

Mr Ken Chan comment: practical and light weight. However, design is spoiled by the
rainwater collecting system at the corners. Do make it free flow of rainwater.

Final Design of Gazebo as approved by Ar. Teoh and Mr Ken Chan. Aesthetically
pleasing due to the skeleton model, practical and modern.

3.2.2 Recreational Center for Amverton Hills
Overview
Site Location : Amverton Hills, Sungai Buloh
Specification : Recreational Center Design Proposal
Mentor : Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan
Task : To design a Recreational Center beside a Sales Gallery.
I am required to work together with my other internship partner, James Tay to design
a recreational center located in Amverton Hills, Sungai Buloh. As the site is quite big, we
will have to design a single story recreational center which is required to have a free form
swimming pool. We must design the circulation of the recreational center and the landscape
features of the whole site, also, to provide the presentation drawings and tabulation of gross
floor area and net floor area. Finally, we will have to combine all perspectives, drawings,
and area tabulation to Microsoft Power Point for presentation to client.
Learning Outcome :
Ar. Teoh has given us a softcopy of the UBBL of designing a recreational center and
it was quite tough to follow the by-laws. However, we manage to settle it within a week. This
was a very fun project as we get to plan the entire recreational center ourselves with no
restriction but the by-laws only. We have also managed to brush up our Sketch Up skills too.

3.2.3 Gazebo Working Drawings
Overview
Specification : Gazebo Working Drawings for Construction
Task : Gazebo Design Working Drawings
alongside the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. I was assigned to do the working drawings to
be submitted to client and also, for construction soon.
I was given a day to finish up this working drawings as I have references of other
gazebo’s working drawings.
Learning Outcome :
It wasn’t easy to do the working drawings as there are many hatches to insert and
layers. However it was interesting to work on these working drawings.

3.2.4 New Gazebo Design
Overview
Specification : Gazebo for a new township
Task : Gazebo Design Proposal
alongside the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. I was assigned to modify the design based on
client’s comment. I was given a day to amend the developed design using the software,
Sketch Up. Mr. Ken Chan guided me along way through.
Learning Outcome :
I managed to learn some new Sketch Up shortcut keys again through this gazebo
design. Also, I manage to gain some knowledge about the positions of I-beams and how it
will actually affect the whole design of the gazebo.

3.2.5 Contract Drawings
Overview
Specification : Contract Drawings for Denai Alam Residence.
Mentor : Ar. Teoh Eng Kuan / Mr Ken Chan / Mr Alan Cheong
Task : To complete contract drawings
alongside the Guthrie Corridor Expressway. I was assigned to indicate all specifications of
the residence using Revit. There are 20 rows of terrace houses to be built in Denai Alam
and I will have to indicate all specifications and adding several details into it.
Learning Outcome
Mr Alan Cheong was very patient with me as I was a beginner in Revit and he guided
me the whole way through while I was doing this project. It was a really fun one but boring
as I will have to indicate the same specifications to all 20 blocks of residential terrace
houses. However, I did pick up some handy shortcut keys and able to do work faster as I
use Revit day by day.
Although the work is little, but it has a lot of steps to finish a block of terrace houses
and it took 2 days to finish a block, because it includes Ground Floor Plan, First Floor Plan,
Roof Plan, 4 Elevations (Front, Rear, Left, Right) and 3 Sections. Furthermore, there are
many specifications that I should add on as I was doing half way too. It took me more than
a month and few weekends to complete this project.

Cleaning up drawing and also setting crop region for all 20 blocks. (Block 3 – 22)

Adding of specifications and setting of view range for all Ground Floor Plan.

Adding more details of ramp, perimeter drains, man hole, outdoor turfing, rain water
down pipe to all blocks.

Adding specifications and detail of First Floor Plan, drop level and rain water down pipe
to all blocks.

Adding of specification, grid lines, roof eave and dimensions to Roof Plan of all blocks.

Indication of specifications, grid lines, type of unit, dimensions, glass symbol, window
and door tags to Front Elevation of all blocks.

Adding of specification, fencing, dimension, window and door tags, and masking regions
of Left Elevation to all blocks.

Indication of specifications and details to Right Elevation too.

Applying different details, stack pipe, vent pipe, rain water down pipes, specifications and
dimensions to Rear Elevation of all blocks.

Cleaning up of drawings, indication of specifications, dimensions, room spaces, position
of stack pipes and more to Section A-A of all blocks.

Modification of party wall form and dimension, adding of trusses, degree of fall, window
tags, room spaces, and more to Section A of all blocks.

Adding of trusses, window tags, glass symbol, specifications, dimensions and grid lines to
Section B of all 20 blocks.

Applying roof trusses, window tags, room spaces, dimensions, specifications and more
details to Section C of all 20 blocks.

Then, I will need to apply all completed drawings to Sheets in Revit to be printed out.

After the completion of contract drawings, I was assigned to complete the Bomba
drawings of 2 blocks within a day. Mr Alan Cheong guided me throughout the whole process
of completing this set of Bomba Drawings.

3.3 Site Visit
3.3.1 New Township at Bandar Ainsdale, Seremban.
This project was still under construction located in Bandar Ainsdale, Seremban. Ar
Teoh Eng Kuan had brought me here to check on the mock up models of the residential
houses here. He emphasizes on the quality of workmanship, the problems faced by the
contractor upon construction because some of the drawings drawn were incorrect.
Also, he emphasizes on the horizontality and the verticality of the beams and columns
made by the workers. Ar. Teoh also ask me to jot down and capture the picture of things that
he had pointed out while site visiting. I have visited this project twice and have accumulated
the pictures below.

Riser of stairs are not
straight enough. As seen
in picture, Ar. Teoh is

Beams is slanting
downwards towards the
end. Contractor will need
to fix that before the next
site visit.

Poor quality workmanship of
plastering done by workers,
surfaces are not flat and
bumpy.
Engineer over estimated the
amount of beam needed,
house looks very heavy as
there are 5 beams across the
living room.
Position of beams are too
low, thus affecting the
aesthetic value of the house
as tiles of the bathroom are
cut.

4.0 Conclusion
Within these 10 weeks of my internship training in Paradigm Architects Sdn Bhd, my
critical thinking skills and visualization has improved a lot. Although there are many
restrictions whenever I am designing, due to the impracticality of the design and the client’s
budget, my supervisor and I had managed to solve it quickly.
This 10 weeks of internship training had brought me lots of joy because of the fun
working environment and the staffs here are extremely patient and friendly. Although we had
to work during the weekends, it was a fun yet tiring working experience. It has greatly
improved my software and communication skill within the collogues here.
Finally, I would like to thank everyone who made my internship training a superb
experience!
