1.0 Acknowledgement
First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Mr Syed Kamal
Affendi who has given me the opportunity to work at ATSA Architects. The past two months have
been such a turning point in my career as an architecture student, ever since I started my
internship here.
Besides, I would also like to thank everyone at ATSA Architects, especially to those who have
been sharing as much knowledge, experience, exposure and faith as they possibly could
throughout my internship period here. I have definitely broadened up my understanding on
Architecture even more now, as well as finally get the chance to experience the real working
culture at an architecture firm. Under the guidance and supervision of some senior and junior
architects, they have helped me improved so much, not only as an architecture student, but as a
person as well.
Next, I would also like to give my appreciation to my fellow colleagues, who have always been
there and helped me getting through this internship. The journey of my internship won’t be as
smooth and successful without their help, assistance and endless support.
Last but not least, my utmost appreciation goes to my tutor, Miss Balkish who has guided me
throughout my internship. Thank you for all the guidance and helping me preparing myself for
the future of my career. I would definitely remember all the fruitful advices during her visit at
ATSA Architects.
2.0 Introduction
2.1 General Purpose of Study
The internship training is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities
and operations involved in working in architectural practices. The purpose is to facilitate
the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in
order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law
and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws.
Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various drawings
from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to
support these drawings.
Via a full time internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation
and report-writing skills require of an employee (architectural assistance / architect) in a
typical architect’s firm.
2.2 Working Environment

2.2.2 Period of Training
The total period of internship training covered 8 weeks from 3rd January 2017 to 10th
March 2017. Students are required to submit their internship training report on Friday,
10th March 2017.
2.2.3 Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 6pm
(Lunch Hour: 1.00pm to 2.00pm)
3.0 Weekly Project Summary
3.1 Week 1 (3rd
January 2017 – 6th
January 2017)
During the first day of internship, my colleague and I were being introduced to every
staff members by the admin of ATSA Architects. We also went for an informal interview
by Mr Syed Kamal (Operating Officer) before our spot were being placed and separated
by him. I haven’t really gotten the task until I actually volunteered myself to help one of
my colleague to create a physical model of Masjid Setia Alam for study on the second day.
On Wednesday, I was assigned to prepare the original floor plan drawing of Surau Al-
Firdaus. It is basically a small, old mosque, located at Kampung Atap, Klang that was built
in 1970s. The resting area of the mosque was burnt about a year ago, resulting a very bad
damage that affects more than 80% of the mosque. Since it was built long time ago, there
were no proper drawings of the mosque produced by any architects back then. So, my
task was basically to produce the original floor plan of the mosque from the site by tracing
from a hand-drawn drawing using AutoCad. The sketch of the old floor plan of the mosque
was prepared by Mr Ismail (ATSA Senior Architect). On Friday, I was also assigned to do a
3D animation video of different mosque, called Masjid Kampung Teluk Memali. It is
basically a conservation project of an abandoned 105-year old masque that has been
relocated and restored from Kampung Gajah to Taman Seri Bougainvillea, Bandar Seri
Botani, Perak. Since it was already Friday, I was given a very short time to produce the
video as the deadline of the video is due on Tuesday, the following week. The video will
be sent to the media, which will be published on television (Majalah 3, TV3). In the
nutshell, the first week of internship had been really tough for me as I wasn’t really
adapted to the real working life at an architecture firm. However, as soon as I got to know
the members of ATSA Architects, I managed to make myself comfortable and getting used
to the real working environment.

Kampung Teluk Memali before being sent to the media, TV3.
3.2 Week 2 (9th January 2017 – 13th
January 2017)
During the second week of internship, I was assigned to amend the floor plan drawing
of Surau Al-Firdaus. I was able to submit the drawings on time to Mr Ismail. Besides, I also
had to finalize the final 3D animation video that week before being sent to the media. The
video was actually produced by using different softwares such as Lumion and Movie
Maker. I was delighted that I was given the faith and opportunity by ATSA Architects to
produce the video that will be published to the television. Even though the time given to
produce the video was considered short, I was still be able to submit it on time with good
quality and satisfaction by everyone at ATSA Architects including the boss, Ar Azim.
Moving on to the next project, I was assigned to produce elevation drawings of an
apartment called, Subang Murni (Nadayu) by one of the junior architects, named Faiz
Rusli. The drawings were produced by using AutoCad. In this project, I have learned to
produce drawings using the correct line weights, colours and also enhancing my AutoCad
skills. By the guidance of Faiz Rusli, I was exposed to several AutoCad commands which
allows me to produce the drawings even faster. However, due to a very intense working
culture, I was absent for the first time as I was down to fever on Thursday.

3.3 Week 3 (16th January 2017 – 20th
January 2017)
As for the third week of my internship period here, I was assigned to continue working
on my drawings. Since the building façade comprises of complicated design of windows,
doors, fin walls and more, it took my awhile to finish it. On Monday, I was also told to
assist one of ATSA Architects draftmen to fold A1 drawings into A4 size. All the drawings
were then being sent to the client’s office in Kuala Lumpur. I was able to meet up with
the client, as well as being able to learn the phase of a project construction. On
Wednesday, I was assigned to assist one of the senior project architect named, Mr Nur
Faiz. I was told to produce a 3D massing proposal of a company factory called Composites
Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM). CTRM is basically an aerospace engineering
company, with the primary field of engineering concerned with the development of
aircraft and spacecraft. It is located at an industrial area, somewhere in Batu Berendam,
Malacca. The factory is currently in pre design phase

3.4 Week 4 (23rd January 2017 – 27th
January 2017)
During my fourth week of internship at ATSA Architects, after several times of
amendment, I managed to submit all the elevation drawings on time. The drawings were
sent to the graphic designer at ATSA Architects for 3D modeling and rendering. As for the
CTRM factory, I was asked to continue making the 3D massing. Since the floor plan of the
factory kept on changing, I had to produce a new 3D massing as well. On Wednesday, I
attended a client-consultant meeting, which took place at a meeting of CTRM, Malacca.
The meeting was lead by the project architect, followed by some mechanical and
electrical engineers, quantity surveyor and the clients themselves. Besides that, I also got
the chance to attend a product presentation from a company called HILTI the following
day. HILTI is a company that provides services in construction industry. From there, I was
introduced and exposed to products that can be used in building construction.

Surveyor, and the clients themselves
3.5 Week 5 (1st
February 2017 – 3rd
February 2017)
It was public holiday (Chinese New Year), so we were given day offs until Wednesday.
As for this week, I only had to continue producing the updated massing based on the
updated CTRM floor plan, prepared by the project architect.

during CCM meeting. Several changes had been made.
3.6 Week 6 (6th February 2017 – 10th
February 2017)
During my sixth week of internship here, as usual, there have been a lot of changes of
the floor plan of the CTRM factory. Due to clients’ demands, many changes had to be
made in order to reduce the cost, as well as improve the functionality of the factory. So,
the massing of the CTRM also had to be changed as well. I was also assigned to propose
a design of the façade, entrance and the office of the factory. On Friday, I also attended
another Client- Consultant Meeting Minutes which took place at CTRM meeting room,
Malacca. The meetings were commenced around 10.00 am to 1.00pm. The meetings
comprised of mechanical and electrical engineer, quantity surveyor and the clients
themselves. I was assigned by Mr Faiz to write minutes and learnt how to chair a meeting
as the architect plays the main role in a site meeting. In the evening, we also went to
Pejabat Tanah & Galian Melaka to get the land planning information, for example zoning,
height limit and plot ratio.

3.7 Week 7 (13th
February 2017 – 17th
February 2017)
As for week 7 of my internship period, I was assigned to update the 3D massing of
CTRM factory, based on the previous meeting that was held last week. This time, only
minor changes had to be made such as the position of the parking lot, the entrance and
etc. Other than that, I was also assigned to propose another design of the entrance of the
factory. Besides that, I also attended a product presentation from X’traseal, a company
that produces wide range of sealants and adhesives for buildings. It was held at ATSA
Architects meeting room and commenced from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

3.8 Week 8 (20th
February 2017 – 24th
February 2017)
During week eight of internship here, I was assigned to propose an improved design
of the entrance of the factory. After several discussion, I have made several entrance
designs according to the discussion that I had with the bosses, Ar Azim and Ar Zulqaisar. I
have gained a lot of knowledge from them, especially in designing a building façade and
functionality. Besides, they have also broadened up my perspectives towards several
architecture elements that could improve me as an architecture student.

3.9 Week 9 (27th
February 2017 – 3rd March 2017)
During the final week of my internship at ATSA Architects, I was assigned to go to
Majlis Perbandaran Hang Tuah, Malacca with a junior architect, Mr Khairul. This time, I
was exposed to the early stages of the DO Submission. I was asked to follow up the
progress on applying Surat Ulasan Kebenaran Merancang (KM) for the CTRM factory, as
well as to have a discussion with the Jabatan Perancang for the KM submission. Besides
that, we also went to Pejabat Tanah & Galian Melaka to get the CD of Garis Panduan &
Piawaian Perancangan of Malcca which costs around RM30. On Thursday, I was assigned
to design the final façade of the factory which includes the windows, materials and some
finishes. After that, I managed to do some final rendering of CTRM factory using V-ray
software. Last but not atleast, I was also assigned to help out the staffs to wrap up the
books that will be sold at a booth. Since it was the final week of internship, I was able to
have a small farewell with some staffs at ATSA Architects as well.

4.0 Conclusion
My internship at ATSA Architects was the first instance of me, working in any professional
field. So, I feel lucky to be doing my internship here as the place of my first work experience. It
had given me a new perspective towards architecture and provided me with a bright insight to
the real world of architectural working industry.
Practical training is very much essential for Architecture Students. It is also a great
opportunity to acquire practical knowledge. During my training period, in the industry I acquired
lots of experiences in producing and submitting BP drawings. This will help me to clarify my
theory knowledge. I hope and pray that it will help me much in the future profession.
I have learnt the values and importance of this industry and experienced that this is a
much superior field than most of the other field during my training. Therefore, I would like to
thank my mentor Mr Nur Faiz Abdul Jabar and all my colleagues for the help and guidance
throughout these 9 weeks of internship training.

  • 3. 1.0 Acknowledgement First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to my supervisor, Mr Syed Kamal Affendi who has given me the opportunity to work at ATSA Architects. The past two months have been such a turning point in my career as an architecture student, ever since I started my internship here. Besides, I would also like to thank everyone at ATSA Architects, especially to those who have been sharing as much knowledge, experience, exposure and faith as they possibly could throughout my internship period here. I have definitely broadened up my understanding on Architecture even more now, as well as finally get the chance to experience the real working culture at an architecture firm. Under the guidance and supervision of some senior and junior architects, they have helped me improved so much, not only as an architecture student, but as a person as well. Next, I would also like to give my appreciation to my fellow colleagues, who have always been there and helped me getting through this internship. The journey of my internship won’t be as smooth and successful without their help, assistance and endless support. Last but not least, my utmost appreciation goes to my tutor, Miss Balkish who has guided me throughout my internship. Thank you for all the guidance and helping me preparing myself for the future of my career. I would definitely remember all the fruitful advices during her visit at ATSA Architects.
  • 4. 2.0 Introduction 2.1 General Purpose of Study The internship training is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in architectural practices. The purpose is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various drawings from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to support these drawings. Via a full time internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation and report-writing skills require of an employee (architectural assistance / architect) in a typical architect’s firm.
  • 5. 2.2 Working Environment 2.2.1 Company Profile ATSA Architects was founded in 1992 by its founding members; Ar. Azim A. Aziz, Ar. Zulqaisar Hamidin and Yee Teck Choon. In the past 21 years, ATSA Architects has been successful in winning several awards and is regarded as one of the better established architecture firms in Malaysia. ATSA has been accorded within the Top Ten architectural practices in Malaysia by BCI Asia for several years. It is ATSA Architects' philosophy to always provide various design solutions for its buildings that will not only be incorporating excellent design ideas but will also provide memorable spaces and timeless architecture. They also believe in designing the next generation of buildings which are green and sustainable, to reduce its carbon footprint. Their goal is to meet the MS 1525 guidelines, for designing energy efficient buildings in Malaysia and designing buildings towards "Architecture 2030", where buildings are to be of Zero Carbon or powered mainly by renewable energy. As an Architectural company, they have experienced many changes over the past 21 years. They have grown in terms of our capacity from 4 key personnel which consists of its two founding members Azim and Zulqaisar, Yee Teck Choon as Senior Architect and Paul Lau as Director, to approximately 60 employees with offices in Penang and Kota Kinabalu. They are also planning to open their latest office in Johor within the first quarter of 2012. Their Head Quarters, located in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, has become one of the most highly computerised medium-sized architecture firms in Malaysia. They have progressed tremendously over the years since 1992. In order to ensure that they are always able to render high quality, innovative designs with comparative services to their clients, they have invested intensively in upgrading ATSA’s CAD division capability with the latest and up to date softwares. Currently, ATSA is also in association with OWMP International, providing Architectural design services in Brunei Darussalam. They have collaborated in jointly producing various design works together. They have also engaged in various international design experiences in Maldives, India, Papua New Guinea, Iran and the UAE. To date, ATSA is undertaking several projects in Malaysia that will be based on LEED and GBI (Malaysia Green building rating) green building rating system.
  • 6. 2.2.2 Period of Training The total period of internship training covered 8 weeks from 3rd January 2017 to 10th March 2017. Students are required to submit their internship training report on Friday, 10th March 2017. 2.2.3 Working Hours Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 6pm (Lunch Hour: 1.00pm to 2.00pm) 3.0 Weekly Project Summary 3.1 Week 1 (3rd January 2017 – 6th January 2017) During the first day of internship, my colleague and I were being introduced to every staff members by the admin of ATSA Architects. We also went for an informal interview by Mr Syed Kamal (Operating Officer) before our spot were being placed and separated by him. I haven’t really gotten the task until I actually volunteered myself to help one of my colleague to create a physical model of Masjid Setia Alam for study on the second day. On Wednesday, I was assigned to prepare the original floor plan drawing of Surau Al- Firdaus. It is basically a small, old mosque, located at Kampung Atap, Klang that was built in 1970s. The resting area of the mosque was burnt about a year ago, resulting a very bad damage that affects more than 80% of the mosque. Since it was built long time ago, there were no proper drawings of the mosque produced by any architects back then. So, my task was basically to produce the original floor plan of the mosque from the site by tracing from a hand-drawn drawing using AutoCad. The sketch of the old floor plan of the mosque was prepared by Mr Ismail (ATSA Senior Architect). On Friday, I was also assigned to do a 3D animation video of different mosque, called Masjid Kampung Teluk Memali. It is basically a conservation project of an abandoned 105-year old masque that has been relocated and restored from Kampung Gajah to Taman Seri Bougainvillea, Bandar Seri Botani, Perak. Since it was already Friday, I was given a very short time to produce the video as the deadline of the video is due on Tuesday, the following week. The video will be sent to the media, which will be published on television (Majalah 3, TV3). In the nutshell, the first week of internship had been really tough for me as I wasn’t really adapted to the real working life at an architecture firm. However, as soon as I got to know the members of ATSA Architects, I managed to make myself comfortable and getting used to the real working environment.

  • 8. Appendix 3.1.3 and 3.1.4: Images above show the final fly through 3D Animation video of Masjid Kampung Teluk Memali before being sent to the media, TV3. 3.2 Week 2 (9th January 2017 – 13th January 2017) During the second week of internship, I was assigned to amend the floor plan drawing of Surau Al-Firdaus. I was able to submit the drawings on time to Mr Ismail. Besides, I also had to finalize the final 3D animation video that week before being sent to the media. The video was actually produced by using different softwares such as Lumion and Movie Maker. I was delighted that I was given the faith and opportunity by ATSA Architects to produce the video that will be published to the television. Even though the time given to produce the video was considered short, I was still be able to submit it on time with good quality and satisfaction by everyone at ATSA Architects including the boss, Ar Azim. Moving on to the next project, I was assigned to produce elevation drawings of an apartment called, Subang Murni (Nadayu) by one of the junior architects, named Faiz Rusli. The drawings were produced by using AutoCad. In this project, I have learned to produce drawings using the correct line weights, colours and also enhancing my AutoCad skills. By the guidance of Faiz Rusli, I was exposed to several AutoCad commands which allows me to produce the drawings even faster. However, due to a very intense working culture, I was absent for the first time as I was down to fever on Thursday.

Appendix 3.2.5: Final technical drawing of the original floor plan of Surau Al-Firdaus in a title block. 3.3 Week 3 (16th January 2017 – 20th January 2017) As for the third week of my internship period here, I was assigned to continue working on my drawings. Since the building façade comprises of complicated design of windows, doors, fin walls and more, it took my awhile to finish it. On Monday, I was also told to assist one of ATSA Architects draftmen to fold A1 drawings into A4 size. All the drawings were then being sent to the client’s office in Kuala Lumpur. I was able to meet up with the client, as well as being able to learn the phase of a project construction. On Wednesday, I was assigned to assist one of the senior project architect named, Mr Nur Faiz. I was told to produce a 3D massing proposal of a company factory called Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM). CTRM is basically an aerospace engineering company, with the primary field of engineering concerned with the development of aircraft and spacecraft. It is located at an industrial area, somewhere in Batu Berendam, Malacca. The factory is currently in pre design phase

Appendix 3.3.3: Another perspective from different angle of the first 3D massing proposal of CTRM Factory including some façade by using Rhinoceros. 3.4 Week 4 (23rd January 2017 – 27th January 2017) During my fourth week of internship at ATSA Architects, after several times of amendment, I managed to submit all the elevation drawings on time. The drawings were sent to the graphic designer at ATSA Architects for 3D modeling and rendering. As for the CTRM factory, I was asked to continue making the 3D massing. Since the floor plan of the factory kept on changing, I had to produce a new 3D massing as well. On Wednesday, I attended a client-consultant meeting, which took place at a meeting of CTRM, Malacca. The meeting was lead by the project architect, followed by some mechanical and electrical engineers, quantity surveyor and the clients themselves. Besides that, I also got the chance to attend a product presentation from a company called HILTI the following day. HILTI is a company that provides services in construction industry. • 31. 4.0 Conclusion My internship at ATSA Architects was the first instance of me, working in any professional field. So, I feel lucky to be doing my internship here as the place of my first work experience. It had given me a new perspective towards architecture and provided me with a bright insight to the real world of architectural working industry. Practical training is very much essential for Architecture Students. It is also a great opportunity to acquire practical knowledge. During my training period, in the industry I acquired lots of experiences in producing and submitting BP drawings. This will help me to clarify my theory knowledge. I hope and pray that it will help me much in the future profession. I have learnt the values and importance of this industry and experienced that this is a much superior field than most of the other field during my training. Therefore, I would like to thank my mentor Mr Nur Faiz Abdul Jabar and all my colleagues for the help and guidance throughout these 9 weeks of internship training.
