hotel and apartment units, hotel, golf course, villas, cinemas, shopping
malls, town centre, phased completion ongoing, project close out
December 2012, is currently in construction. Construction is undertaken
by the in-house construction unit of Amer Group which I was attached.
Overall projected build out cost of US$5billion.There are multi projects
ongoing in various stages of completion with a workforce of 3,000 living
on site. The project was over budget and in delay. I was brought in as VP
Projects my role was a 6 month review of construction scheduling
implementing an on-site audit on programme, cost, and sequence,
method of construction, reporting findings and recommendations to the
CEO Amer Group. The construction unit used the SAP system for tracking
the procurement of all construction materials.
Microsoft Project was the planning system adopted for all time lines and
cost reports. I introduced Primavera which complimented SAP, a sister
product. I also undertook a review of the master plan, implemented a
traffic study analysis, and re-sequenced the infrastructure construction.
I also introduced the Real Estate Progress Reporting system proformas
including a dashboard executive summary report. The reporting system
was in nine phases complementing the various stages of completion as
follows;
Programme, Pre Development, Design, Construction, QHSE,
Procurement, Risk, Cost and Handover. There were no systems in place
when I arrived on site.
Cancun Centara Grand Hotel comprising 100 beds Hotel, staff
accommodation, 100 villas, target date for completion December 2009.
Centara Grand was originally due for completion in June 2009. Centara
Grand is 25KM from Porto Sokhna and part of my Red Sea remit. All
construction activities were carried out by Amer Construction Group, my
role was to upgrade the facility; this was achieved by end of November
2009. My first task was to replace the existing on site construction team
and bring in better quality finishing groups, supervise their activities and
support them to completion. I introduced the handover procedures and
protocols which the Amer Operations Group used for completion.
2008 to 2009 Employer: Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai, UAE
Position held: Vice President Hotels & Hospitality Development
Description of duties: Dubai Trade Centre Development and Dubai Exhibition City overall gross
floor area 1,500,000m2 (DWTC), 7.2km2 approximate area, both sectors
with a portfolio of 18 Hotels brands comprising Accor, IHG, Langham,
Aman Resorts and GHM Hotels, product offerings economy, upper
upscale and luxury hotels.
My responsibility was the review of all technical aspects of the
construction portfolio of 18 hotels for DWTC, including design and
construct-ability and programming of the hotels. This was a continuation
of my role with Mace on DWTC. The product included five, 55 storey
towers of high quality luxury hotels built above four basements and a
podium, plus an Ibis and a Radisson Hotel all within an overall ground
floor footprint of 134,000m2. Construction was still in basement level
when the economic downturn hit Dubai. The balances of the hotels were
in Dubai Exhibition City near the proposed Jebel Ali Airport. My technical

expertise also extended to the master plan of DEC with relation to the
hotels.
2007 Employer: Mace International Limited- Middle East
Position held: Senior Project Manager Sector Leader Hospitality
Description of duties:
Dubai Trade Centre Development Mixed Use Development overall gross
floor area 1,500,000m2, Sector Leader for Ibis Hotel (600 Keys),
Radisson Hotel (450 Keys), GHM Towers 1&2 (70 Storeys), Concierge
Apartments and Aman Towers 1&2 (60 Storeys).
Phase 1 Master Plan, Project Execution Plan, and Procedures Manual
and Dubai Municipality liaison for special studies Phase 1.
Phase 1 Environmental Impact Assessment, Aeronautical Survey and
Wind Study Analysis.
Mace were the construction managers for the Phase 1 development my
role began with implementing the project protocols and strategic
management of the hotel portion of the project and how to tackle the build
out of Phase 1. EIA, Aeronautical Study and Wind Study were required
because of the height of the proposed structures. My role was to review
the structural designs for build-ability relative to the Hotel Requirements;
we adopted a 9m2 grid throughout the site and programmed an
aggressive 5 day construction cycleper floor. Secant perimeter piles 20m
deep were required stretching 1.2km around the perimeter of the site due
to the high water table, prior to excavation and piling of the basements.
Planned manpower on site was to be 12,000 at peak of construction. I
managed the design teams through concept, schematic design, detailed,
tender and construction phases of the project prior to transfer to the
Client. The construction cost of Phase 1 was approximately AED 12
Billion.
2005-2007 Employer: Mace International Limited- Hong Kong & Philippines
Position held: Project Manager
Description of duties:
Seconded to Shangri-La Hotels Hong Kong for the Shangri-La Hotel
Project Boracay, Philippines, a 220 key resort and spa hotel, to manage
the construction of the $80 million hotel project, the staff quarters and
welcome Centre facilities.
Before joining Shangri-la I was appointed by Balfour Beatty as Project
Director for the Manansala Project in Manila a 50 Storeys Residential
project for the Lopez Group. The project was in delay by 134 days with
serious penalties for default and non-completion on time. I was brought
in to bring the project back on track. I implemented a change in the
formwork system to Mivan and increased the concrete strength bringing
the floor cycle down from 10 days to 5 days dramatically reducing the
delay and the project back on time.
Shangri-la was a project with major environmental issues both on the
island and offshore with the marine life adjacent to the beach. The project
was 12.8 hectares area from sea level up to +170m elevation comprising
80 villas, 20 tree houses and 120 bed room hotel. The build was on coral
requiring a short bored piling system to be adopted as recommended by
the design team, I disagreed we went with a flat slab system, the
opportunity to get piling rigs to the island was virtually impossible due to
the fragile sea ecosystem. I am a PADI Master Instructor and surveyed
the offshore coastline adjacent to the property; there was no possibility
of lay barges being able to reach the shore without causing serious
damage to the ecosystem. Compromise was reached and a suspended
ground floor flat slab solution was adopted.
