2. Breaking Rules of Continuity Editing
• This is often done by cutting between performance and narrative.
• The narrative will be intercut with shots of the artist, who is also a character in the narrative, singing/performing the song to
camera.
• This is done to promote the artist as a singer but also to break up the narrative when the tempo of the song is too slow or fast to
run parallel with the narrative.
• This is done in Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sing’ music video, where the narrative is a puppet version of himself getting into mischief during the
verses.
• However, the chorus is slower than the verses so it cuts to Sheeran and the puppet performing during the chorus.
• The costumes are not always continuous and neither is the setting/background and props.

3. Obvious Editing
• Editing is usually intended to be subtle and not distract from what is being watched.
• However, some music videos use editing in a deliberately obvious way to suggest a
particular tone or meaning.
• An example of this is at the start of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sing’ music video when the editing is
fast and disjointed to create a chaotic tone as the car is out of control.
• Another time this is used in Sheeran’s music video is when the puppet character is
getting drunk and the shot becomes blurred and distorted to represent the character’s
deteriorating vision.

4. Jump Cuts
• Jump cuts are usually used to show the passing of time.
• In The Script’s music video for ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ they often
use jump cuts to show that time has passed.
• This makes it seem as though the artist/performer has been waiting a long
time for his partner.
• The intention of this is to provoke sympathy for the artist.
