2. Opatów is situated in the south-east of Poland in the region of
świętokrzyskie. It is a little town on the Opatówka River.
Its population is about 6,3 thousand of people.
3. In the Middle Ages, our town was a settlement called Żmigród on the river,
in the area of forests and lakes. The first mention of Opatów comes from the 12th
century. In 1361 the town received the status of a city with wide privileges.
4. For centuries, Opatów was an important regional center. In the 18th century,
Opatów became home to a number of Greeks, who had escaped to Poland from
Turkish occupation of their homeland. Prior to the Second World War, Opatów
had a substantial Jewish population.
5. St. Martin’s Collegiate Church
The Romanesque Saint Martin of Tours’ Collegiate Church is the most valuable
monument in the town. The church was built in the 12 th century.
The temple contains a lot of elements of Gothic style, Baroque and Renaissance.

9. The Warsaw Gate
It was built in the 16th century. The gate was founded by the owner of Opatów
Krzysztof Szydłowiecki. It is the only one remaining of the four gates which once
towered over the town.
11. The underground tourist route
The dungeons were used for storage and defensive purposes. The total length
of the route is 402 metres. Tourists can visit 46 chambers and corridors running und
the market square. The temperature is between 6 and 12 degrees of Celsius.
13. The market square
The main market square in Opatów is in the shape of a square which
is surrounded by old houses. The most important building here is the town hall.
