  2. 2. Preiļi: <ul><li>Area: 5 km 2 </li></ul><ul><li>Population: 9875 </li></ul><ul><li>Status of the town: 1928. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Preiļi – one of the oldest settlements in Latvia <ul><li>Preiļi region, or Preiļi Land was first mentioned in historical documents in 1348. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1382, the ownership of Preiļi was given to the Borch family who are also considered to be the founders of the city. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Preiļi park <ul><li>One of the most treasured historic beauties is Preiļi Manor and its gardens. </li></ul><ul><li>In the park are many manor’s buildings – Preiļi castle,a chapel, a gate house,a horse stable and three gateways. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>The park’s waterways are dotted with many islands and peninsulas. </li></ul><ul><li>It is also said that the canals form a monogram of the Borchs. </li></ul><ul><li>The Love Hill has its own story. </li></ul>

Preiļi castle and manor <ul><li>Other remaining buildings include a chapel, horse stable, gardener’s cottage, gatehouse, and servants quarter. </li></ul><ul><li>Preiļi castle is an exceptional example of the 19 th century architecture in Latgale which reflects the romantic period in Latvian art and society. </li></ul><ul><li>The reconstruction of the castle had a lasting positive effect on cultural life in Latgale. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Preiļi park chapel <ul><li>The building of the Manor chapel was founded by Josef Heinrich von der Borch . The chapel was central to the spiritual life of the inhabitants and workers of the manor with daily services. Members of the family were buried beneath the chapel in a specially made sepulchre. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Preili museum of history and applied arts <ul><li>The museum collection contains artifacts displaying the region’s history, economic development, educational, and cultural development, as well the influence of notable individuals on the area’s history. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Polikarps Čerņavskis memorial home and museum <ul><li>The home of ceramics has an exhibit “Polikarps Čerņavskis – Master and Personality”. Here one can view the development of the art of ceramics from simple household dishes to complicated and intricate works of art and enjoy the way the artist plays with colour and design. </li></ul>

  11. 11. Preiļi cheese <ul><li>The company is the largest producer and exporter of cheese in the country, as well as an important contributor to the local economy. </li></ul>

Tiny kingdom <ul><li>In the centre of Preiļi, one can visit the courtyard of photography studio, M&MCo, to see local artist Jelena Mihailova’s created castle. </li></ul><ul><li>The castle is illuminated in the evenings and lights shimmer through the windows. There are the bell tower houses, a working clock and a windmill. The castle is created using a variety of materials. </li></ul>
  13. 13. <ul><li>Visitors love having their pictures taken with the castle in the background. To fit the mood more completely, the artist offers to try on ancient costumes for both adults and children made by herself. </li></ul>
  14. 14. Preiļi roman catholic church <ul><li>It is one of the most beautiful architecture monuments in the town. The church is home to several beautiful sacral paintings including a work of art above the altar which dates from 1842. </li></ul>

  16. 16. Guest house “Pie Pliča” <ul><li>In an idyllic location on Raiņa boulvard there is a guest house Pie Pliča – an early 19 th century log building. It is a well-known and popular place known to both locals and visitors. The log structure as well as the surrounding flower garden and stream crossed by small bridges is a favoured spot by newly-weds. </li></ul>
  17. 17. <ul><li>The owner, a businessman Igors Pličs, has created a small place of worship, the smallest in Latvia, which has been acknowledged and consecrated by the deacon of the Catholic church. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Cultural centre <ul><li>The renovated cultural centre was opened on 30 September 2002 and is one of the most modern in the small-town and rural areas of Latvia. During the autumn and winter, visitors can attend concerts, theatre and dance performances, and other events. </li></ul>
