Editing assigment
1. Unit 21: Film Editing: Learning aim A
Film editing is crucial when making a film or TV show. The purpose of film editing is telling a
story who different types of editing techniques.
One technique in particular is continuity editing. Continuity editing is used to create a
smooth sequence in a scene or segment of I film.

Another editing technique in film and TV is cross-cutting. Cross cutting is used to show 2
scenes that are happening at the same time in a sequence or a segment. For example, in
this scene from the film “Inception”, The camera cut backwards and forward to the scene
with the characters asleep, to the scene in the hallway when one of the protagonist are
fighting the antagonist in the dream world. The use of cross-cutting matches with each
action in both scenes. For example, then the van drives off the road, time is slowed down
and then cuts to the dream sequence to show that time is moving normally. This is used to
show the audience time is moving slowly in the real work and that shows that what is
happening in the real work, is effecting the dream world the protagonist is in. it gives off a
sense of logical progression. Overall, I think this scene was partially effective because it can
be quite hard for the audience to concentrate on what is going on in both scenes which can
lead to the audience either getting confused or disorientated.
Another main editing technique in filmand TV is non-continuity editing. Non- continuity
editing is mainly used in flashbacks, montages and jump cuts.

Montages are used to help show a series of events in a matter for a few minutes. The
montage could show a protagonist daily routine or it could be used to tell a story in
different settings in just a few minutes. For example, in this scene from the film “Rocky,”
the director decided to use a montage to show the audience Rocky training in various cut to
different scenes to show the audience that he is work hard every day when they watch the
montage. It makes the audience think that with each cut, he is getting closer his main goal
and this will make the audience feel proud of rocky and will keep on encouraging him to do
better. This montage is effective because it makes the audience proud of Rocky as he works
harder and harder each day. This scene is also effective because it could inspire the
audience to work as hard as him every day.
Flashbacks are used to help the audience know what is going on in a particular scene in a
film. For example, there could be a scene that might be ambiguous to the audience and
when the flashback happens, the audience will get exposition for the other scene they
watched. For example, in the first and second act of the film“Forest Gump.” The story is
told in a non-linier time line.
2. The filmstarts with the main protagonist sitting on a bench talking about his first shoes that
he ever wearied. The next scene is a flashback the main protagonist as a child and it shows
the audience his first shoes he had. This flashback is effective because before the flashback
when the main protagonist talks about the first shoes he ever wearied, it makes the
audience think “What first shoes did he wear” and then, when the flashback happens, the
audience gets some exposition on what were his first shoes he ever wearied.

Jump cuts are used to in film and TV by the camera transition to another scene or camera
angle. It is also used to jump forward in time. For example, is the French film “A bout de
souffle (Breathless),” as the characters are driving in the car, the camera jumps forward to
the same scene, but with a different shot. This was used to show the audience that time is
moving forward in the scene and they will know this because of the change of frame.
Overall, this jump cuts in this scene were effective because it shows the audience that time
is moving forward because if the sudden change of frame and this can also not be effective
because it can be disorientating for the audience and this can lead to them being confused
about what is going on on the screen.
