2. First commentsCons
From the start, Tom, our media teacher, spotted the first error in the advert. The shot starts with the actor
standing still before walking, ruining the smoothness of the scene as the viewers wait for the actor to walk.
What we should have done - In our plans/storyboard, the actor should be walking continuously, so that he has
already been walking and the viewers have joined in. To improve the scene, we should have cut the start off and
decrease the speed, therefore it will make up the time that has been cut.
Pros
The use of mise en scene of white shoes connotes to purity, in which is related to the quality of the water
product.
The use of the tracking shot and tilt up was smooth, and was in pace with the action of the actor.
3. Second commentsCons
In these sequences, the camera was slanted, creating a dutch angle.
In which wasn’t intended.
Once again the actor is standing still, waiting for the action to take place, ruining the flow.
The way the actor is positioned from one shot (third picture) is different to the angle he is facing in the fourth
image. Ruining the fluidity.
What we should have done - Firstly, we should have have checked the tripod for the balance of the shot, making sure it
was shot straight. Once again cut the part where the actor is waiting for the action to take place and we should have
shot the next scene right away from where he catches the bottle to ensure he stays on the right angle. Or we should
have done multiple takes.
Pros
The use of match on action was edited in a good standard
4. Third commentsCons
When using a trombone shot; a dolly or track should be used to ensure quality and smoothness.
There are people in the background that are not part of the advert.
What we should have done - We should have at least waited for the people in the background to leave, but they
were doing something for their project. Also we could have found a different location, but our equipments was
already set up before they appeared. The track and dolly wasn’t available on our schedule, and we thought of not
including it, but we gave it a shot and we thought it was fine.
Pros
The ambitiousness of the use of the trombone shot was decently executed, without the use of the track or dolly,
but it still lack fluidity.
The use of the rule of thirds with the trombone shot helps establish the marketing design of the product, from
the logo.branding, colour scheme, and bottle design. Therefore informing the viewers the product right away.
5. Fourth commentsCons
The rain droplets on the lenses ruins the fluidity and smoothness of the scene, as it
diverts the audience’s attention from the main action. It also puts the scene out of
focus as it is shot through the water, making it blurry.
The mise en scene of the weather juxtaposes from the choice of music as the light and
upbeat tone of the music contrasts from the grey and dull weather.
What we should have done - As we only had an hour to film, we didn’t have time to check
our recordings as we were tight on time. Therefore next time, we should take multiple
shots to avoid this mistake, and review the footage.
We didn’t have a choice but to film in the dull weather conditions as we only had one
lesson to film. But filming the advert at spring or summer time would be ideal.
6. Fifth commentsCons
The slogan should have stayed on screen for longer, so the viewers could read it by their own
time.
The music at the last second of the video is cut too early, and the slogan is also cut whilst the
product is still on screen.
What we should have done - The last second of the video should have been cut, as it surpassed the
30 seconds mark. Or the music and slogan should have stayed on the same time as the video.
Pros
The use of the pak shot and the rule of thirds once again allows the audience to establish the
look of the product and the space from the rule of thirds allows the slogan to appear next to the
product that is being advertised.
7. Reflection
Doing this preliminary task has allowed me to identify the
pros and cons of our use of cinematography, mise en scene,
and editing. I will use the feedback our teacher has given
use for my deodorant advert to make sure the mistakes will
not be made, hopefully creating a better advert.
Though there are some control variables problems that I
cannot mend and are hard to avoid; such as the, weather,
schedule of actors, availability of the equipments, I will
definitely use the feedbacks to my advantage.
