Single cameras are mainly used in filmand TV. This technique was first used in classical
Hollywood cinema’s in the 1910s and became a staple in the film and TV industry. The way
this technique is used by using a single or multiple cameras to shoot one scene of a film or
episode. For example, you can use multiple to shoot one scene, this is mainly used in soap
operas where the director will cut from A to B while 2 cameras could be pointing at person
A while another 2 camera could be pointing at person B. This helps to shoot one scene
without moving the set while using only one camera is mainly used for film to capture one
scene on one set.
When using a single camera set up, you would have one camera set up to shoot each scene
with one camera to capture the footage.
One advantage for using single cameras is that fact it will much cheaper then used multiple
cameras.
Another advantage when using single cameras is the fact that they do take as much space
where a multiple camera setup takes up more room. Therefore, you will have much more
free space with a single camera for props and equipment.
Another advantage is the fact that you capture all of your footage on one camera so it will
be easier when it comes to editing and it can save more time.
Another advantage for using single cameras is the fact that you don’t have to worry about
another camera being in the frame as you are using one camera for one scene.
A fitch advantage when using a single camera is the fact that you will have less equipment
to worry about with can lead to more productivity.
One disadvantage for using single cameras is that it can very time consuming with can each
to overscheduling and delayed release dates.
Another disadvantage is that you will have to change the set each time you want to film a
scene at another angle to keep continuity witch can also lead to overscheduling.
Another disadvantage is fact that the actor/actresses will start to get tired of the doing the
same scene repeatedly with can lead to stress and aggression.
A fourth disadvantage when using a single camera is the fact that have to be careful with
each shot to make sure that you keep continuity.
A fifth disadvantage when using a single camera is the fact some of the crew member may
for agree with using a single camera while shooting the film which can lead arguments and
more disagreements.
There are many types of camera shots that are used in filmand tv dramas.
For example, in the film, 1917, at the start of the film where the two soldiers trying to make
it the other side if the trenches, the use of Steadicam in the film is used to help the audience
emerge themselves in the setting the protagonist are in as the filmis structured to look like
one shot to make the audience think that they are right beside the soldiers. This scene uses
a camera stabilizer so that the camera man can move more fluently rather the moving on a
dolly. Also, in this scene, there is a lot of long shots of the empty and destroyed landscape
the protagonists are in. These long shots are used to make the audience feel scared for the
protagonists as the long shots show that basically they are on their own with no one to help
them as they move though the trenches. Using a Steadicam for this scene was effective
because this technique gives the audience a flued experience throughout the scene. This
scene would not be as effective using a tracking shot or a handheld camera because if the
cameraman used a tracking shot, he would have the same flexibility as a Steadicam and
using a handheld camera can be disorientating for the audience with can ruin the
immersion.
This scene also had close up shots. These shots are used to show the emotions the
protagonists are feeling. This shot makes the audience feel scared for the characters as
there walking through the trenches. It also makes them feel thankful that they are not in the
same situation as the protagonists. Close up shots in film and tv are usually used to show
expressions a character’s face or they are used to make the audience focus on a specific
thing like an object or someone’s face. Overall the close up shots are effective because they
help show what each protagonist is feeling via facial expressions witch help make the
audience care for these protagonists.

In the music video of Arctic monkeys’ Florescent Adolescent. The use of over the over the
shoulder shots and close up shots makes the audience feel disturbed as the clowns attack the
civilians. The closes up shots the clowns beating up the men makes the audience feel
sympathy for them and it also make them unconfutable as they see their bloody faces. The
handheld camera is used to help give the music video that edgy, gritty and disorientating
effect as the camera shakes around. The long shots in the music video were effective because
they make audience feel like they are with the character in the music video and make them
feel like they haven’t got any personal space. The handheld camera in this music video is
effective because it helps give the video dark and cheap tone witch will make the audience
feel disoriented by what’s going on the screen. There are also a lot of POV shots in this music
video. POV shots in film and TV are used to show a person or objects point of view to
symbolise what the they might think or feel. The POV shot in the characters perspective give
the audience a first-person view of the clowns which will make the audience unconfutable
and scared when they see the clowns faces. Overall the POV shots are effective because they
help give off the dark and violent tone of the music video by showing the audience what the
character see in a first-person perspective.

in the opening sequence of the first episode of the tv drama game of thrones, the rules of
third are used on the three men on the horses. The audience are immediately drawn to the
middle of the screen where the three protagonists stand as they are the main focus in the
first scene. It makes the audience question “who are these men and why are they going into
passed the giant gate?”. It helps create anticipation for the audience and it will make them
want to carry on watching. The rules of third or used to make a person focus and a certain
aspect if a frame or photograph to grab their attention. The rule of thirds in this scene was
effective because it grabbed the audiences’ attention straight away it will make then think
about who they might be. as the scene goes on, we get a long shot of the surroundings the
characters are in. The long shot is if the massive tundra shows the audience where and
characters are, and it will make them think why. Long shots can be used to show the
audience the possible setting of a film or TV show. Overall this long shot of the tundra is
effective because it shows the audience the potential setting of the entire show and it make
them question why are the character in that certain location.

A fifth disadvantage when using a single camera is the fact some of the crew member may for agree with using a single camera while shooting the film which can lead arguments and more disagreements. There are many types of camera shots that are used in filmand tv dramas. For example, in the film, 1917, at the start of the film where the two soldiers trying to make it the other side if the trenches, the use of Steadicam in the film is used to help the audience
  • 3. emerge themselves in the setting the protagonist are in as the filmis structured to look like one shot to make the audience think that they are right beside the soldiers. This scene uses a camera stabilizer so that the camera man can move more fluently rather the moving on a dolly. Also, in this scene, there is a lot of long shots of the empty and destroyed landscape the protagonists are in. These long shots are used to make the audience feel scared for the protagonists as the long shots show that basically they are on their own with no one to help them as they move though the trenches. Using a Steadicam for this scene was effective because this technique gives the audience a flued experience throughout the scene. This scene would not be as effective using a tracking shot or a handheld camera because if the cameraman used a tracking shot, he would have the same flexibility as a Steadicam and using a handheld camera can be disorientating for the audience with can ruin the immersion. This scene also had close up shots. These shots are used to show the emotions the protagonists are feeling. This shot makes the audience feel scared for the characters as there walking through the trenches. It also makes them feel thankful that they are not in the same situation as the protagonists. Close up shots in film and tv are usually used to show expressions a character’s face or they are used to make the audience focus on a specific thing like an object or someone’s face. Overall the close up shots are effective because they help show what each protagonist is feeling via facial expressions witch help make the audience care for these protagonists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma9I9VBKPiw In the music video of Arctic monkeys’ Florescent Adolescent. The use of over the over the shoulder shots and close up shots makes the audience feel disturbed as the clowns attack the civilians.
