TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH – VIDEO 1
Lil Dicky (Earth) - Initially the music video introduces their audience into worldwide issues around
nature, through denoting a news report on the California fire; this then alters in a transition to a TV
within a shop, through an effective use of editing. Immediately the music video engages the audience,
as generally everybody has watched or been involved within the news at least once in their lifetime,
and as a result is effective in creating something that is relatable to the audience and the music
video/artist themselves. This results in a stronger relationship that is built between their audience, as a
sense of trust and care is set, through making worldwide issues more aware within their community and
how that in doing so helps people change in conforming to society's (in this instance ‘Earths’) needs; it
also effective in self promoting the artist (Lil Dicky) in setting a positive attitude around the artist.
In regards to camerawork within this small section of the music video (panning out to about 9 seconds)
it is limited to the total amount of shots used, yet some shots, including an extreme long shot, denoting
center LA’s skyscrapers in a sunset mise-en-scene, and a pan, denoting the numerous amount of forest
fires in California, are used effectively to create meaning and effect through the audience. Initially, it is
evident that the extreme long shot pan is used to develop an immediate serious tone to the music
video, alongside the worldwide issues creates an engaging, yet threatening, atmosphere to the music
video. This creates an intriguing effect on their audience as the news reports on the fires are introduced
during this shot of LA in the backing sound effects, this shows an understanding on the issue, creating
a trustworthy approach to the music video, but also introduces that a great effect will occur to this such
iconic place, setting a transformation within his audience to change the future of earth’s problems that
we have caused; it is evident that this is the purpose of music video, to change people, as the video
talks about saving earth and stopping the problems that we have caused, shown throughout the music
lyrics and animation used etc.
RESEARCH – VIDEO 1 CONTINUED
Furthermore, a lot of editing has taken place alongside the camerawork that is initially used in the
narrative strand of the music video. This is evident in the title of the music video appearing, when the
music videos narrative is introduced denoting ‘Earth’, and throughout the majority of the video when an
animation effect is involved, denoting Lil Dicky in an animation figure form going through the range of
diversity in our nature alongside issues that are occurring within earth. Initially, at the beginning of the
music video we, as the audience, are introduced the main title of the music video, this denoted ‘Earth’.
From the title that appeared, it clearly shows a linked reference to the music video, being primarily about
nature, but also holds intertextuality references to the popular BBC program ‘Planet Earth’, which grew
insanely popular in the recent years and talked about nature's incredible wonders etc. The effective use
in referencing BBC’s ‘Planet Earth’, through the slight glow on the edging of the title, brings in the wider
audiences, alongside this it also supports the fact that the music video is about nature and the earth,
setting an immediate idea on what the expect throughout the music video.
In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the
only things included that I may use consists of the initial opening shots, stating worldwide issues that
relate to everybody, alongside also including the title effect, of which states the title of the video and
relates to hidden meanings and messages that are concealed within it. With using the initially opening
scenes of worldwide issues, linking effectively with my music choice, I would switch the issues around to
about mental health, this is generally because it affects millions of people and is relatable, alongside
linking very well with the lyrics and title of my music. Furthermore, I think I would also use the title effects
upon the opening of the video. This would obviously be changed to a title that is suitable and relevant;
but I would also change the aspects of which it is presented in, this consist of making it hold meanings
and conceal certain messages or intertextuality within it.
RESEARCH – VIDEO 2
David Guetta (Titanium) - Initially the music video sets the scene and situation through multiple uses of
panning shots, denoting a school scenario in a destroyed environment in an isolated area. The
immediate use of panning is effective in setting the initial atmosphere of the music video, this was
primarily under mystery at the beginning of the video as a destroyed school had been denoted whilst
also consisting of being isolated, this differs to the normal stereotype juxtaposing massively to
stereotypical busy and clean corridors. Further, setting this atmosphere engages the audience and is
effective in grabbing the attention of the viewers through the mystery aspect show here. Alongside the
use of panning shots, it is followed by a tracking shot of which follows the main character leaving the
school, this is also used effectively in showing more of an understanding to the audience of the total
damage that has occurred, still holding the mystery genre and creating connotations that whatever has
occurred the child has been involved within it, engaging the audience even more, and as a result means
a longer view time is present in their audience.
In regards to camera work, as previously mentioned, panning and tracking shot have been used
effectively, but a range of other shots had also been used to create meaning, present a character, and
set an initial atmosphere. The main shots changing the perspective of things within the music video
consist of a long shot and close up. Firstly the use of a long shot, denoting two large women running in
the foreground with the main character overlaid on top of them (roughly about 1:35), immediately
changes the pace and atmosphere of the situation, from a fast paced action scene to a much more
relaxed situation. The camerawork here, backing into a long shot, is effective IN creating a much more
relaxed atmosphere that juxtaposes well against the previous scenes. This is evident in how a speeded
up motion effect is present in the previous scenes, creating an intense and quickly paced tone to the
narrative, contrasting effectively against the consequent scene, presenting a slow motion shot of two
RESEARCH – VIDEO 2 CONTINUED
Furthermore, a lot of editing has taken place alongside the camerawork that is initially used in the
narrative strand of the music video. This is evident in the excessive use of a slow/speeded up motion
effects to the different shots, primarily show when the main character is initially introduced (slow motion)
and in the escape scene when on his bike (speeded up). Initially, the use of a slow motion effect creates
a much more relaxed atmosphere to the video, this is effective in allowing the audience time to
understand the narrative of the video much more efficiently; this comes across the different scenarios
that is evidently used throughout the video, from a stereotypical school to an urban street and then a
forest, as well as the atmosphere that is intended throughout their audience, differing from time to time,
primarily under an intense chase scene to a relaxed calm and more thoughtful setting. Further, the use
of a speeded up scene effectively engages the audience, this is primarily because the narrative is being
pushed onwards quickly, but also because the main character is subsequently running away from the
police, this conveys that he has done something wrong, creating a sense of mystery in the narrative that
is engaging throughout the music video, until the last shot where we find out the reasoning behind the
chasing.
In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the
only things that I can relate to which may be effective are the use of slow/speeded up motion effects to
different scenes in my music video. From this I think that a slow motion shot would be engaging to my
audience, and would effectively flow my narrative onwards from scene to scene; further, the use of
speeding up some of the scenes could be used similarly, to push the narrative forwards quickly and
create a sinister atmosphere, which is evident in my music choice and structure of the narrative here.
Therefore using these aspects as mentioned, being a slow or speeded up motion to some of the
different shots, would benefit my music video greatly; as I could use them to effectively engage my

The White Stripes (Seven Nations Army) - The white stripes most recognized music video and song across
the world was called ‘Seven Nations Army’, holding many awards for creating such an impact into the world
with such simplicity to the production of the music. The video holds a very interesting illusion style
throughout, used as a transition between the different scenes of the guitarist/main vocal singer to the
drummer in a repeated pattern, and then a discoloration is used between the beat drop of the music itself,
alongside visual editing creating a greater effect on its audience as a whole. Throughout the music video
only red, white and black is used; the white and black is used to create the illusion, almost never ending,
cycle that is repeated, and then the reed is used to emphasize the duo between themselves, such as
through the denotation of a bright red top and drum set that is reoccurring. The change in color between the
group, being red and white, in the illusion/background, is effective in making you as the audience focus
more towards the identity of the group, creating a stronger relationship between each other as it allows their
audience more ease in recognizing the duo as a collective; furthermore, it is also evident that they want to
be recognized, through the constant denotation of their faces in the music video, supporting the fact that
they want to be identified as the duo who had come up with this song, primarily because this was their only
worldwide popular song and so they have used this as an opportunity to gain popularity as a person.
Furthermore, in the music video, it is evident that a limited amount of intertextuality is referenced
throughout the video. Some of the references include the white stripes brand franchise, this is presented
through the reoccurring white triangular stripes that appear in the illusion aspect of the music video, and
willy wonka the chocolate factory, through the denotation of red and white swirls set on the drum kit. The
duo effectively embed their brand franchise, as a concealed idea, through the white stripes to gain
further recognition on promoting their brand through this such popular song; furthermore it is also
repeated throughout, creating a greater effect as it is constantly visualized into their audiences mind,

In regards to camera work primarily low angle shots are used, denoting both the singer/guitarist and drummer
singularly in separate scenes, alongside medium close ups are also being used, in a similar way to present the
duo separately. The low angle shots used creates a dominating and threatening atmosphere to the music video,
which is essential in linking across the rock genre where a threatening personality is stereotypical of this type of
music, conforming to society's expectations. Furthermore, they also used medium close ups in the music video;
these allows more of a personal relationship between the duo and their audience members, allowing them to
connect more as they are clearly recognizable and more approachable; this is generally because in these shots
they make eye contact with the camera and are much more relaxed compared to when the beat of the music
drops. Even Though the camera work is essential to conveys certain messages between the duo and their
audience, editing is also important and used regularly throughout the music video. The main cause of editing is
the transition between each scene, in having the illusion and never ending effect. The use of this transition
causes a great effect on their audience in conforming to the beat of the song, primarily because the general
beat of the song is never ending, similarly to the music video which is in a never ending effect, linking effectively
across the music and video itself. Furthermore, having the beat of the video conforming to the song also
creates a much more linked atmosphere, engaging the audience effectively and as a result creates a stronger
connection between them.
In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the only
things included that I may use consists of the dark color scheme, this relates to the colors black and red and
white, primarily because it holds sinister and threatening connotation which reflect my video effectively. Using
these colors through dress codes, the mise-en-scene etc will result in many messages throughout, mainly
conveying that the character holds sinister interpretations, this is essential to the music video. Further, I also
think I would transfer the use of a low angle shot within my own video. This is primarily because the use of both
aspects will strongly convey a sinister message through my audience, alongside this it would also deliver a
threatening atmosphere which is essential to the purpose of the music video. In conclusion these aspects

Franz Ferdinand’s most popular music video and most recognized video across the world was called
‘Take me out’, holding Grammy nominations, mercury prize and many more awards. The music video
holds a very interesting comic book, steampunk and retro design that creates an impressive effect on
their audience, denoting many mechanical structures with cogs, appealing to the steampunk theme, a lot
of dotted patterns in a discolored format, representing the pop art movement and comic book interests of
people, and then finally retro, through the constant discoloration of everything contained within the
video, alongside the occurring newspaper scene that appears to be in the retro design of the late 1990s.
It is unsure to why these themes have been specifically emphasized throughout the music video, but it
links effectively along with the initial sounding of the main singer, having added a slightly radio effect to
their voice, making it as a whole seem like a retro and older produced song. Furthermore, this retro
theme that is presented here is also evident throughout a range of their music videos across the
platform, denoting unusual forms of design and creative aspects in the way they present their music; it is
clear that there is purpose behind the unusual creativity in their videos, yet it is vague behind the
reasoning why they use this style.
Furthermore, in the music video, it is evident that a lot of intertextuality is referenced throughout
the video. Some of the references include the cybermen from doctor who, this is presented when
the members of Franz Ferdinand are denoted with a robotic body made out of cogs, the pop art
movement, by including recognizable features such as the dotted pattern and random everyday
objects, and finally Rocky the film, when a boxing match of Rocky Balboa is evident in a
newspaper that regularly appears throughout. There are many more references in the music
video but they are primarily concealed in different ideas or themes that appear, also because the
RESEARCH – VIDEO 4 CONTINUED
In regards to camerawork a few long shots and close ups had been used, denoting the band as a whole
generally; however, evidently a lot of zooming out or zooming in shots had been used similarly. These
zooming in shots had been effectively used in making their audience focus in on certain parts that hold
messages or convey meaning within; further, these zooming in/out shot helps engage the audience
more, this is primarily because more of the situation is being revealed (for zooming out) and is engaging
alongside the unique style of the music video, creating a sense of interest throughout their audience on
what's coming next. It is also effective in zooming in, as it limits the total amount of view space, to
generally make you focus in more on the band themselves, and as a result makes them more
recognizable through referencing their identities much more clearly, this of which is useful for future
references. Furthermore, a lot of editing is clearly established throughout the music video, primarily
through adding colorization effects, layering different objects over the others, and animations embedded
in. Music videos generally all have quite a bit of editing, but this exceeds anything that have seem
previously as there seems to be so much going on at the same time, almost overwhelming its audience
to the creativity involved, which is evident throughout most of their music videos holding similar styles
and techniques.
In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the
only things that I can relate to which may be effective are the use of zooming in/out shots and the
various amount of intertextuality references that are used throughout. Initially the use of zooming in/out
shots would be effective in setting the general setting and situation of the narrative (zooming out),
whether that’s through the main character etc, but also the use of zooming in would be beneficial to
present a focus point of the video, in this instance it would be the main character. Furthermore, also the
use of intertextuality would be effective in bringing the wider audiences from different backgrounds,
POTENTIAL SONGS
Our initial briefing when choosing a song for our music video, whether you like it or not, comes under anything
that you can access across the internet; this comes under a wide range of different genres, from rock to country,
yet in the instance of music that I prefer it generally comes under the pop/upbeat type of music. Some of the
music that comes under the type of music I enjoy, and in general would work effectively within a music video,
consists of:
Flashes by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this initial song, and the way that it is presented, comes across a
motivational vibe. Following from this I would use it to set issues surround nature, I think it would be effective to
send a message over a clear narrative, mainly because it is engaging a doesn’t have following lyrics, just a
beat.
Heroes Tonight by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this song, it is evident that a up beat/happy yet isolated
atmosphere is set through the music and lyrics, setting a juxtaposed vibe throughout. Further I think it would
effectively suit a narrative based music video, primarily because you could easily follow the lyrics alongside.
Gizmo by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this song, it is obvious that a happy atmosphere is set throughout,
in the beat, instruments used and lyrics. Following from this it would effectively suit a relationship or summer
vacation music video narrative, this is because it links well with the song and is engaging to the audience.
In My Mind by Dynoro & Gigi D’Agostino – With this song, it is clearly defined that a sinister and creepy
atmosphere is set, through the lyrics and music style used. From this both a narrative and message directly
focused video would work; this is generally because mental health issues could be involved, linking well with the
lyrics, but also a narrative could be set, possibly with children through the vocals but also in a horror genre.
Cradles by Sub Urban – Finally in this song an obvious creepy/horror genre is set, through the music and lyrics
POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
In regards to techniques that will come across my music video, there is a wide range that surround the
initial idea to create meaning, ideas, and effects on the audience when watching the music video that i
will produce. Some of the techniques listed below, consisting of camera movement, angles and editing,
visual effects, lip syncing, and cutting techniques, are described regarding how i could use them in my
project:
Camera movement techniques – Following camera movements, these consist of different shots, such as
a panning or tracking shot, that generally are in a constant movement; whether that’s following a
characters footsteps, tracking, or setting the mise-en-scene of a shot/scene, panning. This is evident in
music videos such as ‘Earth’ (Lil Dicky), where a panning shot is initially used as the first shot of the
video, denoting the LA skyscrapers, which is evidently linked across the music video in regards to the
California fires; furthermore, it is also presented in ‘Titanium’ (David Guetta) where a tracking shot,
following the footsteps of the main character of the narrative, is used throughout the music video in
different places, such as in the beginning, middle and end.
With regards to the different camera movements available, I think that it would be beneficial to use them
throughout my video. I would use the following tracking shot to denote the movement of the main
character, whether that’s from behind or focusing in on a certain body feature, such as their feet or
arm/shoulder. This allows a free flowing transition between the narrative that is placed and the different
shot/scenes that will be included, but also means it engages my audience more, as the narrative is
moving forward; this is evident in the tracking shot that would be used, and effectively intrigues the
audience into where they’re going and what may happen next, leaving them to carry on watching the
video. I would also use the panning shot effectively to similarly intrigue the audience, yet primarily to set
CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
With regards to the general horror genre that I am following, there is stereotypical features that will be
included within my music video, linking to other media sources relating to the same or similar style.
Some of these features primarily include the setting, this mainly coming under very isolated and urban
areas in dark or confined spaces, dress codes, including the denotation of simple dark clothing whilst
limiting the amount of revealing styles (such as hoodies and long baggy clothing), camera
movements/shots, incorporating the use of close ups and extreme long shots to evoke the idea of
isolation (linking effectively alongside the stereotypical setting situations, as it helps identify them), and
finally editing, primarily coming under the use of some fading shots yet mainly quick cutting and adding a
vignette to emphasize the focus point of the music video.
Initially, and possibly one of the most important factors in engaging the audience to the sinister
genre that will be set throughout the music video, is the setting used. I plan to use a variety of
different settings across a wide range of locations to hopefully create reliability within my
audience, through having possibly encountered or seen these locations in your nearby area; this
is effective through engaging the audience more and creating a stronger relationship that is built
between myself and my audience, it also allows escapism, which is primarily evident in locations
of urban areas who don’t have the ability to experience some of these locations physically.
Further, these location that I will have chosen to be included within my music video (yet to be
confirmed) will include stereotypical features of the horror genre, helping conform to society's
expectations of scary and intense situations of which create a threatening atmosphere
(something that is critical to the video), some of these features come under very isolated and
urban areas in dark or confined spaces.
CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE CONTINUED
In regards to others conventions that I will use in my music video effectively, yet also remaining
important to the sinister genre, comes under dress codes. I plan to use a set style of clothing to help
support the specific genre that is being presented, and to create a focus point of mystery within the
music video alongside sinister connotations; these features conclude of primarily all black or dark
colored clothing, whilst also consisting of a hood (this is critical in mystery context of the video, which
also supports sinister connotations) and a baggy jumper/jacket. The use of these dress codes denoted
on the main character of the music video helps support the sinister connotations that are essential, and
as a result causes a sense of mystery, as nothing obvious to the figure and clothing creates any sense of
identity; this evidently causes my audience to become intrigued into the narrative strand of the video,
whilst also engaging the audience effectively to find out their identity, this remains visible in the last shot
of the video, leaving them focused until the end.
Furthermore, also one of the most important components to make up this video as a whole, comes
under camera movements/shots. In regards to this aspect, it covers a lot; however, some elements to
this cause stand out, such as panning, tracking and extreme long shots. Initially, the use of panning
shots helps establish the mise-en-scene or situation of a character, this would be effective in allowing my
audience to gather more of an understanding to the sinister narrative and atmosphere being set;
alongside this, an extreme long shot works similarly. Further, the use of a tracking shot would help to
move the narrative onwards, as it effectively follows the steps of the main character presented; this also
can be used to focus in on a particular feature, creating a focus point or point of interest which may alter
the audiences interpretation of the situation, character or place, this is useful in hinting at the mystery
genre alongside.
SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES
As a result of creating a music video for the first time, there is a various amount of different opportunities
and disadvantages when first producing it. Initially, I am going to go through some of the opportunities
that will help me out in the near future, whilst also learning different aspects of directing a music video
permanently. In regards to opportunities that will help me develop, they generally come under learning
new skills, management/directing the filming of the video, meeting new people/actors, gaining a wider
experience of producing, and in filming across a variety of different abstract locations.
Initially, and as foremost one of the most important opportunity, comes under learning new skills. In regards to
producing and directing a music video, the general new skills that I will develop are editing aspects, such as
transitions and visually engaging effects, and finally different camera work styles/shots, primarily being panning
and tracking shots to emphasize the accustomed genre. To begin with, editing aspects are effective and useful
in engaging the audience, to present the scenario being set in the video, but also to display a more obvious
understanding of the narrative/video as a whole in the audience, as different focus points and context can be
individually emphasized; such as through the use of a vignette and blur effect, concealing the affected area, and
as a results making the audience engage on the distinctive focal point, of which is intended by the use of these
editing effects. Furthermore, also different camerawork styles/shots will develop alongside producing the video.
These generally consist of panning and tracking shots, used to show more of an understanding of the situation
or mise-en-scene through the audience (panning shot), but to also to quickly move onwards the narrative of the
video (tracking shot if necessary). In conclusion, editing and camera work/shots are a very beneficial
opportunity to take across making the music video project. This is primarily because these are skills of which will
permanently help in the near future, whether that’s through producing good quality coursework for
college/university, or through the range of different job opportunities that can come up across the media
platform.
SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED
Furthermore, another opportunity that seems very important to myself through producing this music
video project, whilst also remaining very important and being beneficial in the future, comes under
management. In regards to producing and developing a music video, management has to be one of, if
not the most crucial component to making a successful and well organized/planned music video.
Management comes under a large range of different aspects, some of which consist of booking different
places to record, hiring actors to participate within the video, and most importantly the timings/arranging
of different scenes etc. In conclusion, management plays such a significant part in the music video, and
evidently will be essential in my and anyone else's future; whether that's through a future job or in many
different life situation which will occur, such as a holiday or appointments in health etc.
Even more so, another opportunity that seems important in gathering and having a contented social life,
whilst as usual remains very important and beneficial in the future, comes under meeting new people. It
may seem obvious, but can make I big impact on your life permanently, whether its an actor you make
friends with, it means that in other possible projects they would probably be more willing to work
alongside you, due to your connection between yourselves. Furthermore, it could be a company rather
than a person, and as a result can mean organizations collectively work together, which may bring in
different communities and bring in the wider audience, generating more of a popularity and recognition
nationally. In conclusion, meeting new people seems very obvious and insignificant, yet it is very
beneficial in the long term, not just personally but also nationally, bringing in different communities from
around the country, or even world if the project is of a big brand name. However, personally for me this
opportunity is still greatly positive. Its effective in create connections with people in my local area, which
is limited at the moment due to moving schools, but also means opportunities open up, whether that’s
through these people I meet or as a collective with them.
SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED
Furthermore, another opportunity that seems alongside all of the others, very important to myself, yet
not so much everybody else this time, whilst remaining very beneficial in the near or far future, comes
under gaining a wider experience. It is known that for most jobs a good experience is essential in setting
a good example efficiently, that’s why part of this project is very effective in setting and beginning that
journey of experience in the filming and editing and producing industry. Further, presenting the theme of
producing the music video, directing it, and organizing everything, from booking equipment and times of
filming different scenarios in every other location, all gives a very good and accurate representation of
jobs and situations I may be incorporated within if I head towards the media industry. In conclusion,
experience is such a significant element in identifying whether this is the right path for me to follow, but
primarily is because it is an effective component in getting jobs and showing an understanding of the
industry; coming under video producing and editing and directing and time management, all of which are
essential in the media industry from day to day.
Finally, another one of the opportunity's, and the final one alongside all of the others that have been
beneficial, this also seems very important, yet is portrayed in a very insignificant and concealed point of
interest, comes under filming across a variety of different abstract locations. This is one of the most
important features of a film, as it can portray a specific characters situation or present a particular
atmosphere, however, in the instance of being an opportunity, it is also very beneficial off camera. It can
allow myself to reimagine the video as a whole, rethinking different shots, scenes and possibly the whole
video, but also results in the opportunity to visit some incredible places, some of which may be
concealed to the local public, whereas myself would have the right to film there. In conclusion, location
can effectively impact the video as a whole, primarily altering the narrative and portrayal of characters;
but also grants the opportunity to visit some amazing places, whether that’s a public place or private
SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS
As a result of creating a music video for the first time, there is a various amount of different opportunities
and restrictions when first producing it. Adjacent to the opportunity's, I am going to go through some of
the restrictions to my ideas of my music video now. In regards to restrictions that prevent myself from
performing certain aspects of my ideas, they generally come under the total amount of budget allowed in
the production of the video, accessibility to locations, being unable to use professional equipment,
having to produce family friendly content for all, and finally the issue regarding copyright of certain types
of music.
Initially, and as foremost one of the biggest restrictions, when coming across producing a music video,
comes under the total amount of budget allowed in the production of the video. Throughout music
videos, generally a lot of money goes into hiring actors, locations, and booking out equipment; however,
in regards to myself, there isn't a budget given, due to being a college project, meaning everything used
must be free of charge. Due to this limitation, actors, have to be friends/family that are available,
locations, primarily have to be public places, and finally equipment, also have to be free of charge from
the college of which are booked in advance; as a result this limits the total amount of possibilities
significantly, meaning that generally the video produced isn't to the best of its standard that it can
achieve, portraying an unprofessional and poorly sophisticated music video being produced. However,
alongside the budget being a compelling and momentous restriction to the video, some positives are
available from this situation. Some of which come under generally more public places are used,
meaning that more of a connection and bond is built between the video and its audience; this is primarily
because the location used are reflective of real life situations and locations, meaning the video is much
more approachable through being relatable to the audience present. In conclusion, the budget holds a
significant impact on the total amount of possibilities available, consisting of generally location and
SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS CONTINUED
Furthermore, another restriction that holds a considerable and significant effect on the music video as a
whole, yet remains still not completely essential in making the music video, comes under being unable
to use some professional equipment. It is evident that in every music video available professional
equipment is used efficiently and effectively, this is present through the quality of the recording and other
equipment used, such as lighting and camera movement stabilizers. However, in regards to myself,
some of these equipment choices are unavailable, primarily consisting of portable lighting etc; this is
because the college are only able to provide the cameras, due to other equipment be excessively
expensive, alongside the fact that if any is damaged then costs will be applied. In conclusion, it is
obvious that a lack of professional equipment restricts the possibilities available when producing the
video, and also will evidently create a video that is not to the best of its ability; however, in regards to
essentials, cameras are provided and available, meaning a good quality recording is achievable, and
helps support the fact that a music video can be produced from this, even though its limited.
Even more so, another restriction that holds back the full potential of the music video being produced,
yet once again isn't essentially needed, comes under having to produce family friendly content for all.
Initially, once this was mentioned as a limitation to the video, it doesn’t affect myself alongside the
choice of music I had chosen; yet in regards to other people, cause issues that significantly changes
their video ideas as a whole. Currently in our time period, most songs don’t follow the family friendly
content that is advised, primarily evident under the rock and rap genre; due to songs not following these
advised restrictions, a lot of editing is then taken place to cover up swear words and explicit scenes etc,
resulting in a prolonged music video generation, taking longer to finally release. In conclusion, this
restrictions doesn’t affect me greatly, however may affect overs significantly; even though generally
ideas of family friendly content is portrayed poorly in areas of the rock and rap genre, it does hold some
SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS CONTINUED
Furthermore, another limitation that affects everything significantly about the music video, no matter
what choice of song you have specifically selected, comes under copyright of using certain types of
music/songs. Across the music industry, once a song has been produced they are generally always then
copyrighted, given the owner of the song the choice to do whatever they want with it, primarily giving the
right to use it or not etc. This comes under a large issues across making a music video, as not having
the right to a song can evidently change everything, because you wouldn’t be able to use it ever. In
regards to myself, the song I have chosen already states it is non copyrighted, giving me the freedom to
use it in anyway possible, and evidently means that I will be able to produce the video; however for other
people, it will be a significant issues to their whole music video ideas. In conclusion, copyright is a
serious issues in regards to making a music video, yet personally it doesn’t affect myself with the choice
of music selected; however with other people, they would have to inquire on the use of the song/music
type.
Finally, the last restriction that can alter the production of the music video being created, yet isn’t
essentially going to change the project as a whole, comes under accessibility to the locations. In regards
to this it primarily comes under if we can access the location, whether its been locked off from the public
or is in the boundary of private land, and if the crew can make it to the desired location/s, such as in the
case of a family emergency of transport issues. If any of these issues appear in the case of an
emergency, then the only option would be to either reschedule to a more appropriate date, suiting the
needs of everybody to turn up, or relocate the filming scenario. In conclusion, having accessibility issues
significantly alters the production line when filming the music video, meaning that the production of the
video, in regards to filming and the editing, has been delayed to a further date, creating an
inconvenience; however, if backup locations and dates are scheduled, in the case of an emergency, then

Name Of Artist: Dynoro & Gigi D’Agostino
Biographical Background: "In My Mind" is a song by Lithuanian DJ Dynoro and
Italian DJ Gigi D'Agostino. It is based on the 2012 song of the same name by
Ivan Gough and Feenixpawl featuring Georgi Kay, and uses the hook from

any production. The new remix was released on B1 Recordings, a joint venture
with Sony Music. In July 2018, the song reached number one in the German and
Austrian music charts. It was also a number one hit in Czech Republic, Finland,
Hungary, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and a top 5 hit in Belgium and
Ireland. It also made it to number five on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the
first top five hit in Britain for both Dynoro and D'Agostino.

LOCATIONS
Initially, it is evident in the caption below, that the recording is set underneath a railway track on an under
passing road. This is specifically situated Selby YO8 5AL, at a distance of 13.6 miles (quickest route)
from York College. In regards to the specific time of day when the filming will take place, comes under
the transition between day and night, otherwise known as in the evening. Furthermore, the only costs
that will be applied consist of transportation from York/Wakefield to the location, this is because my
actors come from further away places.
In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under travelling from place to place, alongside having to film in a
generally dark area. Initially, and the most important restriction which may apply, comes under
transportation; this is primarily because the people acting in my music video come from further away
locations, consisting of Wakefield and York. Furthermore, another limitation which could create a significant
impact to the overall quality of the video being produced, comes under the general dark lighting in the
scene; this is could cause a grainy effect to the recording, of which will evidently reflect an unprofessional
and poorly produced video.
Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, a few different option appear in this location; these primarily
come under the risk of slipping, being hit by a passing car, and the risk of passing strangers in the
surrounding neighborhood. Initially, and most obviously, there is a risk of slipping and falling over in the
case of bad weather appearing, primarily coming under rain as snow or frost is unachievable in the
current time period of the year. Alongside the fact that slipping is a significant hazard that is possible in
almost any location, also being hit by a car is, as for the location of the filming is on a road, increasing
the overall chances of this from occurring. Finally, alongside all of the other possible outcomes which
may occur, this seems almost impossible to avoid, being coming into contact with strangers; whether

Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, two different option appear in this location; these primarily
come under the risk of getting hit by a passing car, and the risk of surrounding strangers in the area.
Initially, there is a predominant risk of being hit by a car; even though the location of filming is in a
closed off walkway tunnel, it is beside a very busy road where regularly cars pass at high speeds. Due
to the evidently highly fast cars passing beside the location, when exiting/entering the location of filming,
there will always be a significant risk of being hit, regarding why it is being identified here. Furthermore,
and most finally, the filming area is along a public footpath, in regards to this there will always be a
chance, whether that’s through communication of physically, that you will come in contact with the

the filming will take place, comes under in the evening, otherwise also anytime during the day is

is not intended or fully essential.
In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under travelling from place to place, alongside having the
right to film by a church, regarding privacy situations with nearby graves. Initially, a significant issues
which is occurring within the different locations, comes under transportation; this is primarily because the
people acting in my music video come from further away locations, consisting of Wakefield and York.
Furthermore, another limitation comes under having the right to film near a church; this is significant as
privacy rights may be implied against the location, but also regarding the graves, restricting the potential
of what to film in this area.
Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, a few different options appear in this location; these primarily
come under the risk of slipping on the uneasy ground, falling into the nearby ditch, and the risk of getting
hit by passing vehicles. Initially, and very obviously with most outside locations, there is a risk of
slipping on the uneasy ground, this primarily being mud and grass, in the case of bad weather occurring.
Furthermore, having a nearby ditch evidently could cause harm to ourselves, this is predominantly
because in the case of bad weather occurring again, which is highly likely, we could slip into this near
risk. Alongside the other possible risks, the most significant one comes under being hit by a passing car;
even though the location of filming is concealed to the side of the road in the distance, there will always

this is being grass and mud, in the case of bad weather causing it to occur at a higher chance.

Initially, it is evident in the caption below, that the recording is set beside some derelict buildings along
the river Ouse. This is specifically situated Selby YO8 6EB, Cliffe Bank, Turnham Lane; at a distance of
13.9 miles (quickest route) from York College. In regards to the specific time of day when the filming will
take place, comes in the evening and midday. Furthermore, the only costs that will e applied consists of
transportation from York/Wakefield to the location identified, because actors etc come from further away
locations.
In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under traveling from place to place, alongside whether or not
I have the right to film and access the abandoned buildings, and having to film in a generally dark area.
First, transportation is a big restriction to the process, this is primarily because my actors etc in the music
video come from farther away location, such as York/Wakefield. Furthermore, also whether or not I have
the right to film the location, regardless of entering it, could cause a significant problem. Finally, the area
is generally dark, causing a grainy effect to the recording, reflecting an unprofessional and poorly
produced music video.
Finally, in consideration to the risk assessment, a few different reasons appear in regards to the location;
these primarily coming under the risk of slipping on the uneasy ground, risk of falling in the river beside,
and the worst of all, the risk of the structure of the abandoned building collapsing. Initially, there is a risk
of slipping in the case of bad weather from occurring, this is supported through the ground predominantly
being mud and grass, increasing the chances overall. Alongside, there is also the opportunity to fall into
the river beside, it is highly unlikely, but there is still the opportunity as nothing is in place to prevent it
from occurring. Furthermore, and most finally, there is also the risk of these abandoned building

Initially, it is evident in the caption below, that the recording is set in a forested area, full of vegetation
and a concealed stream within. This is specifically situated Wakefield WF4 4AX, New Hall Lane; at a
distance of 36.9 miles (quickest route) from York College. In regards to the specific time of day when the
filming will take place, comes in the evening and midday. Furthermore, the only costs that will be applied
comes into transportation, as from actors etc, all come from farther away location, such as York.
In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under travelling from place to place, alongside having to film
in a generally dark area. Initially, and the most consequential restriction which may apply, comes under
transportation; this is primarily because the people acting in my music video come from further away
places, consisting of Selby and York. Furthermore, another limitation which could create a significant
impact to the overall quality of my video being produced, comes under the general dark lighting in the
scene; this causes a grainy effect, and evidently reflects an unprofessional and poorly produced video.
Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, a few different options up hear from this specific location;
these primarily come under the risk of slipping and falling along the unleveled ground, and coming
across any wild animals that may present a threatening behavior towards you. Initially, there is a risk of
slipping a falling over in the case of bad weather occurring, primarily coming under rain as for snow or
frost in unachievable in the current time period; this also may be possible under normal conditions, as for
a lot of branches and roots along the pathway stick out, creating a numerous amount of hazards in total.
Furthermore, and most finally for this location, comes under the possibility to come across a wild animal
which may present a threatening atmosphere towards yourself; this seems unlikely but the opportunity
still holds being possible with the various range of animals that are in the location.
PERSONNEL
In regards towards my crew, this significantly differs in comparison against other
music videos, this is primarily because only myself is involved within the process
of pre-production to filming and finale editing phases (otherwise known as the
whole project). However, due to some locations involving a higher risk of people
interrupting the scenarios, such as a town center, I did involve someone to keep
watch of the surrounding area, in the case of somebody appearing they would
politely interrupt them asking to currently wait until the shot had been captured.
Furthermore, I had also used a family relative in their assistance to gather one
recording of a pan from behind me, this was necessary as for it would seem
impossible to perform by myself; alongside they were also useful in preventing
oncoming strangers from interrupting the shot, of which would evidently mean for
me to retake until another suitable time.
Evermore so, some personnel's had been used in the production of my music
video, yet to an extent of not actually participating or being involved within the
technical aspects, they were primarily useful in the filming phase and this was
their only beneficial involvement, not completely changing the project
significantly.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
In regards towards props, these were not an essential or important implication that would be used in my
music video; this category had primarily been scrapped and only come under the costume instead. The
costume is the most important aspect that is essential within my music video i am to produce; this is
primarily because it helps support the intended atmosphere and genre, these coming under
sinister/threatening connotations alongside a sense of mystery so engagement in the audience is present
throughout, whilst also being effective in portraying the figures lifestyle, of which the narrative consists of.
The dress codes consist of generally full dark clothing whilst also incorporating a hoodie. Initially, the
dark dress genre is essential in supporting the sinister and threatening atmosphere set tryout my music
video; alongside this also creates a sense of mystery through the character's identity, as for nothing
abstract or recognizable is achievable, of which further means a sense of engagement in the audience is
present. And finally, having denoted a hood within the figure is necessary in concealing the face of the
character; supporting the sense of mystery that is displayed throughout my audiences feelings.
If I had the ability to change the dress codes present, I would; altering specific aspects to infer a sense of
strength and dominance over the audience more. Initially, it is important to recognize that some of these
atmospheres intended to emphasize through these changes (strength and dominance) is already
displayed, primarily in the dark clothing and sense of mystery which creates a dominating attitude;
however, this needs to be emphasized more, and in doing so I would change his footwear to big black
boots, and also incorporate possibly a prop. The use of big black boots would help support the sense of
strength, this is primarily because strength is required in wearing this clothing type whilst also having a
close representation to Michael Myers (a mass serial killer); and then secondly, having a prop, such as a
knife, would making it much more threatening and worrying throughout the audience, of which supports
the portrayal of dominance intended whilst consisting the sinister and threatening atmosphere.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
CONCEPT BOARDS: THE
DARK FIGURE
In regards to creating this initial and prominent figure that appears throughout the music video,
they need to be used effectively. Initially, I had come to conclude that a threatening atmosphere
will be set through the character to create a greater effect on the audience, alongside also
sinister connotations will be incorporated to support the atmosphere and help convey the
message more. Through the characters dress codes they will primarily come under black/dark
clothing consisting of a black hoodie; this seemed essential to get across as it lacks a sense of
identity/recognition, conforming toward another genre being mystery. Furthermore, the figure
would generally in his movement and position be concealing his face in a slow progressing from
position to position, whether that be through walking etc; this also seemed essential in creating
tension throughout the audience, engaging them more, but also through supporting that
threatening connotations set. This juxtaposes effectively against scenes of him running, as for it
differs incredibly to the usual portrayal of the character; once again making it much more
intriguing into the character itself and the music video narrative.
CONCEPT BOARDS: THE
DARK FIGURE CONTINUED
Upon the initial thoughts on the figures looks, representation, and characteristics, a blurry effect
may be beneficial to incorporate. It allows the restriction of identity, which is idle throughout the
music video, and supports sinister/threatening connotations around the character and
atmosphere set, conforming to my expectations intended.
However the blurry effect may look impressive, effective, and perfect to suits the needs of the
general ideas around my video, it does hold some disadvantages. In regards to applying the
effect, initially it is very difficult to do this, as for lowering the focus can display the intended
visual, yet also affects the background; creating a pointlessness to the need for locations.
Furthermore, there is a range of different variants to the focusing aspect, producing a clearly
visible structure to the figure or a slim irregular look; the issue here is that it would almost seem
impossible to produce the same look/style and extent of blurriness toward the figure in every
different shot intended throughout the music video, from start to end. This would evidently look
poor, and infer an unprofessional music video; conveying a range of different messages
throughout my audience about myself as a producer, editor, and actor in my work.
CONCEPT BOARDS: ISOLATED
LOCATIONS
On of the most important factors into making a music video comes under locations. In regards to
locations they are imperative to include within my music video, they primarily come under
isolated and or abandoned locations of interest. Initially it is important to recognize that locations
help convey certain messages that the producer/artist etc want to emphasize upon and help
support a narrative through its free flowing transitions from place to place; because of this, it
seems impeccable that in relation toward my music video, abandoned and isolated locations
help support the main message i am wanting to spread across, coming under mental health,
whilst also inferring different meaning and generating ideas across the identity of the main
character, being a figure, of which evidently creates more of a tension and engagement in the
audience.
RIP-O-MATIC

PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Week 1 & 2 - Initially, during the first few days of pre-production, i am to to spend this beginning week on
aspects of research. The primary achievement that needs to be acknowledged and hopefully performed
consists of a larger understanding into music videos themselves. Generally it may seem an obvious
statement to hear, having most people watched music videos on a daily basis as the world increases in
technological advancements; however, there is much more present to than just grabbing a bunch of footage
and putting it together, evidently producing a music video, of which will then be displayed upon a various
amount of social media websites. In current time, music videos consist upon a large range of different ideas,
portrayed through different scenes/lyrics/shots, whilst also effectively engaging the audience in contrasting
information throughout; these ideas displayed are some key features of which i will identify across a range of
different music videos (such as white stripes and Franz Ferdinand), and evidently become very beneficial in
the production and end product of this project.
Week 3 - Next, after the pre-production phases comes the filming phase; it is quite obvious want this means,
to beginning filming the music video that will evidently be your end product. This will predominantly be
finished during my own spare time, as for lesson time still comes under finishing off research requirements
and coursework regarding the project; furthermore, the research produced here will primarily come under
planning, risk assessing, and location confirming, this is due to the relevance between them.
Week 4 & 5 - Finally, during the last couple of weeks, of which closes the project to an end, I am to spend this
time on aspects of editing and my final evaluation of the end product etc. Initially it is important to recognise
that the editing component should only take a couple of days to complete, of which leaves 4 days to finish off
every other uncompleted work and evidently the evaluation to finish everything off. It may seem at ease of
accomplishing this, however due to the large extent of work required and detail that is necessary within it, the
outcome of finishing everything to an outstanding rate, of which i hope to achieve, is very difficult in achieving
under this small amount of allotted time.

  • 2. TASK 1 Idea Generation and Research
  • 3. RESEARCH – VIDEO 1 Lil Dicky (Earth) - Initially the music video introduces their audience into worldwide issues around nature, through denoting a news report on the California fire; this then alters in a transition to a TV within a shop, through an effective use of editing. Immediately the music video engages the audience, as generally everybody has watched or been involved within the news at least once in their lifetime, and as a result is effective in creating something that is relatable to the audience and the music video/artist themselves. This results in a stronger relationship that is built between their audience, as a sense of trust and care is set, through making worldwide issues more aware within their community and how that in doing so helps people change in conforming to society's (in this instance ‘Earths’) needs; it also effective in self promoting the artist (Lil Dicky) in setting a positive attitude around the artist. In regards to camerawork within this small section of the music video (panning out to about 9 seconds) it is limited to the total amount of shots used, yet some shots, including an extreme long shot, denoting center LA’s skyscrapers in a sunset mise-en-scene, and a pan, denoting the numerous amount of forest fires in California, are used effectively to create meaning and effect through the audience. Initially, it is evident that the extreme long shot pan is used to develop an immediate serious tone to the music video, alongside the worldwide issues creates an engaging, yet threatening, atmosphere to the music video. This creates an intriguing effect on their audience as the news reports on the fires are introduced during this shot of LA in the backing sound effects, this shows an understanding on the issue, creating a trustworthy approach to the music video, but also introduces that a great effect will occur to this such iconic place, setting a transformation within his audience to change the future of earth’s problems that we have caused; it is evident that this is the purpose of music video, to change people, as the video talks about saving earth and stopping the problems that we have caused, shown throughout the music lyrics and animation used etc.
  • 4. RESEARCH – VIDEO 1 CONTINUED Furthermore, a lot of editing has taken place alongside the camerawork that is initially used in the narrative strand of the music video. This is evident in the title of the music video appearing, when the music videos narrative is introduced denoting ‘Earth’, and throughout the majority of the video when an animation effect is involved, denoting Lil Dicky in an animation figure form going through the range of diversity in our nature alongside issues that are occurring within earth. Initially, at the beginning of the music video we, as the audience, are introduced the main title of the music video, this denoted ‘Earth’. From the title that appeared, it clearly shows a linked reference to the music video, being primarily about nature, but also holds intertextuality references to the popular BBC program ‘Planet Earth’, which grew insanely popular in the recent years and talked about nature's incredible wonders etc. The effective use in referencing BBC’s ‘Planet Earth’, through the slight glow on the edging of the title, brings in the wider audiences, alongside this it also supports the fact that the music video is about nature and the earth, setting an immediate idea on what the expect throughout the music video. In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the only things included that I may use consists of the initial opening shots, stating worldwide issues that relate to everybody, alongside also including the title effect, of which states the title of the video and relates to hidden meanings and messages that are concealed within it. With using the initially opening scenes of worldwide issues, linking effectively with my music choice, I would switch the issues around to about mental health, this is generally because it affects millions of people and is relatable, alongside linking very well with the lyrics and title of my music. Furthermore, I think I would also use the title effects upon the opening of the video. This would obviously be changed to a title that is suitable and relevant; but I would also change the aspects of which it is presented in, this consist of making it hold meanings and conceal certain messages or intertextuality within it.
  • 5. RESEARCH – VIDEO 2 David Guetta (Titanium) - Initially the music video sets the scene and situation through multiple uses of panning shots, denoting a school scenario in a destroyed environment in an isolated area. The immediate use of panning is effective in setting the initial atmosphere of the music video, this was primarily under mystery at the beginning of the video as a destroyed school had been denoted whilst also consisting of being isolated, this differs to the normal stereotype juxtaposing massively to stereotypical busy and clean corridors. Further, setting this atmosphere engages the audience and is effective in grabbing the attention of the viewers through the mystery aspect show here. Alongside the use of panning shots, it is followed by a tracking shot of which follows the main character leaving the school, this is also used effectively in showing more of an understanding to the audience of the total damage that has occurred, still holding the mystery genre and creating connotations that whatever has occurred the child has been involved within it, engaging the audience even more, and as a result means a longer view time is present in their audience. In regards to camera work, as previously mentioned, panning and tracking shot have been used effectively, but a range of other shots had also been used to create meaning, present a character, and set an initial atmosphere. The main shots changing the perspective of things within the music video consist of a long shot and close up. Firstly the use of a long shot, denoting two large women running in the foreground with the main character overlaid on top of them (roughly about 1:35), immediately changes the pace and atmosphere of the situation, from a fast paced action scene to a much more relaxed situation. The camerawork here, backing into a long shot, is effective IN creating a much more relaxed atmosphere that juxtaposes well against the previous scenes. This is evident in how a speeded up motion effect is present in the previous scenes, creating an intense and quickly paced tone to the narrative, contrasting effectively against the consequent scene, presenting a slow motion shot of two
  • 6. RESEARCH – VIDEO 2 CONTINUED Furthermore, a lot of editing has taken place alongside the camerawork that is initially used in the narrative strand of the music video. This is evident in the excessive use of a slow/speeded up motion effects to the different shots, primarily show when the main character is initially introduced (slow motion) and in the escape scene when on his bike (speeded up). Initially, the use of a slow motion effect creates a much more relaxed atmosphere to the video, this is effective in allowing the audience time to understand the narrative of the video much more efficiently; this comes across the different scenarios that is evidently used throughout the video, from a stereotypical school to an urban street and then a forest, as well as the atmosphere that is intended throughout their audience, differing from time to time, primarily under an intense chase scene to a relaxed calm and more thoughtful setting. Further, the use of a speeded up scene effectively engages the audience, this is primarily because the narrative is being pushed onwards quickly, but also because the main character is subsequently running away from the police, this conveys that he has done something wrong, creating a sense of mystery in the narrative that is engaging throughout the music video, until the last shot where we find out the reasoning behind the chasing. In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the only things that I can relate to which may be effective are the use of slow/speeded up motion effects to different scenes in my music video. From this I think that a slow motion shot would be engaging to my audience, and would effectively flow my narrative onwards from scene to scene; further, the use of speeding up some of the scenes could be used similarly, to push the narrative forwards quickly and create a sinister atmosphere, which is evident in my music choice and structure of the narrative here. Therefore using these aspects as mentioned, being a slow or speeded up motion to some of the different shots, would benefit my music video greatly; as I could use them to effectively engage my
  • 7. RESEARCH – VIDEO 3 The White Stripes (Seven Nations Army) - The white stripes most recognized music video and song across the world was called ‘Seven Nations Army’, holding many awards for creating such an impact into the world with such simplicity to the production of the music. The video holds a very interesting illusion style throughout, used as a transition between the different scenes of the guitarist/main vocal singer to the drummer in a repeated pattern, and then a discoloration is used between the beat drop of the music itself, alongside visual editing creating a greater effect on its audience as a whole. Throughout the music video only red, white and black is used; the white and black is used to create the illusion, almost never ending, cycle that is repeated, and then the reed is used to emphasize the duo between themselves, such as through the denotation of a bright red top and drum set that is reoccurring. The change in color between the group, being red and white, in the illusion/background, is effective in making you as the audience focus more towards the identity of the group, creating a stronger relationship between each other as it allows their audience more ease in recognizing the duo as a collective; furthermore, it is also evident that they want to be recognized, through the constant denotation of their faces in the music video, supporting the fact that they want to be identified as the duo who had come up with this song, primarily because this was their only worldwide popular song and so they have used this as an opportunity to gain popularity as a person. Furthermore, in the music video, it is evident that a limited amount of intertextuality is referenced throughout the video. Some of the references include the white stripes brand franchise, this is presented through the reoccurring white triangular stripes that appear in the illusion aspect of the music video, and willy wonka the chocolate factory, through the denotation of red and white swirls set on the drum kit. The duo effectively embed their brand franchise, as a concealed idea, through the white stripes to gain further recognition on promoting their brand through this such popular song; furthermore it is also repeated throughout, creating a greater effect as it is constantly visualized into their audiences mind,
  • 8. RESEARCH – VIDEO 3 CONTINUED In regards to camera work primarily low angle shots are used, denoting both the singer/guitarist and drummer singularly in separate scenes, alongside medium close ups are also being used, in a similar way to present the duo separately. The low angle shots used creates a dominating and threatening atmosphere to the music video, which is essential in linking across the rock genre where a threatening personality is stereotypical of this type of music, conforming to society's expectations. Furthermore, they also used medium close ups in the music video; these allows more of a personal relationship between the duo and their audience members, allowing them to connect more as they are clearly recognizable and more approachable; this is generally because in these shots they make eye contact with the camera and are much more relaxed compared to when the beat of the music drops. Even Though the camera work is essential to conveys certain messages between the duo and their audience, editing is also important and used regularly throughout the music video. The main cause of editing is the transition between each scene, in having the illusion and never ending effect. The use of this transition causes a great effect on their audience in conforming to the beat of the song, primarily because the general beat of the song is never ending, similarly to the music video which is in a never ending effect, linking effectively across the music and video itself. Furthermore, having the beat of the video conforming to the song also creates a much more linked atmosphere, engaging the audience effectively and as a result creates a stronger connection between them. In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the only things included that I may use consists of the dark color scheme, this relates to the colors black and red and white, primarily because it holds sinister and threatening connotation which reflect my video effectively. Using these colors through dress codes, the mise-en-scene etc will result in many messages throughout, mainly conveying that the character holds sinister interpretations, this is essential to the music video. Further, I also think I would transfer the use of a low angle shot within my own video. This is primarily because the use of both aspects will strongly convey a sinister message through my audience, alongside this it would also deliver a threatening atmosphere which is essential to the purpose of the music video. In conclusion these aspects
  • 9. RESEARCH – VIDEO 4 Franz Ferdinand’s most popular music video and most recognized video across the world was called ‘Take me out’, holding Grammy nominations, mercury prize and many more awards. The music video holds a very interesting comic book, steampunk and retro design that creates an impressive effect on their audience, denoting many mechanical structures with cogs, appealing to the steampunk theme, a lot of dotted patterns in a discolored format, representing the pop art movement and comic book interests of people, and then finally retro, through the constant discoloration of everything contained within the video, alongside the occurring newspaper scene that appears to be in the retro design of the late 1990s. It is unsure to why these themes have been specifically emphasized throughout the music video, but it links effectively along with the initial sounding of the main singer, having added a slightly radio effect to their voice, making it as a whole seem like a retro and older produced song. Furthermore, this retro theme that is presented here is also evident throughout a range of their music videos across the platform, denoting unusual forms of design and creative aspects in the way they present their music; it is clear that there is purpose behind the unusual creativity in their videos, yet it is vague behind the reasoning why they use this style. Furthermore, in the music video, it is evident that a lot of intertextuality is referenced throughout the video. Some of the references include the cybermen from doctor who, this is presented when the members of Franz Ferdinand are denoted with a robotic body made out of cogs, the pop art movement, by including recognizable features such as the dotted pattern and random everyday objects, and finally Rocky the film, when a boxing match of Rocky Balboa is evident in a newspaper that regularly appears throughout. There are many more references in the music video but they are primarily concealed in different ideas or themes that appear, also because the
  • 10. RESEARCH – VIDEO 4 CONTINUED In regards to camerawork a few long shots and close ups had been used, denoting the band as a whole generally; however, evidently a lot of zooming out or zooming in shots had been used similarly. These zooming in shots had been effectively used in making their audience focus in on certain parts that hold messages or convey meaning within; further, these zooming in/out shot helps engage the audience more, this is primarily because more of the situation is being revealed (for zooming out) and is engaging alongside the unique style of the music video, creating a sense of interest throughout their audience on what's coming next. It is also effective in zooming in, as it limits the total amount of view space, to generally make you focus in more on the band themselves, and as a result makes them more recognizable through referencing their identities much more clearly, this of which is useful for future references. Furthermore, a lot of editing is clearly established throughout the music video, primarily through adding colorization effects, layering different objects over the others, and animations embedded in. Music videos generally all have quite a bit of editing, but this exceeds anything that have seem previously as there seems to be so much going on at the same time, almost overwhelming its audience to the creativity involved, which is evident throughout most of their music videos holding similar styles and techniques. In regards to aspects within the music video that I would take out and possibly use within my own, the only things that I can relate to which may be effective are the use of zooming in/out shots and the various amount of intertextuality references that are used throughout. Initially the use of zooming in/out shots would be effective in setting the general setting and situation of the narrative (zooming out), whether that’s through the main character etc, but also the use of zooming in would be beneficial to present a focus point of the video, in this instance it would be the main character. Furthermore, also the use of intertextuality would be effective in bringing the wider audiences from different backgrounds,
  • 11. POTENTIAL SONGS Our initial briefing when choosing a song for our music video, whether you like it or not, comes under anything that you can access across the internet; this comes under a wide range of different genres, from rock to country, yet in the instance of music that I prefer it generally comes under the pop/upbeat type of music. Some of the music that comes under the type of music I enjoy, and in general would work effectively within a music video, consists of: Flashes by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this initial song, and the way that it is presented, comes across a motivational vibe. Following from this I would use it to set issues surround nature, I think it would be effective to send a message over a clear narrative, mainly because it is engaging a doesn’t have following lyrics, just a beat. Heroes Tonight by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this song, it is evident that a up beat/happy yet isolated atmosphere is set through the music and lyrics, setting a juxtaposed vibe throughout. Further I think it would effectively suit a narrative based music video, primarily because you could easily follow the lyrics alongside. Gizmo by NCS (Non Copyright Music) – With this song, it is obvious that a happy atmosphere is set throughout, in the beat, instruments used and lyrics. Following from this it would effectively suit a relationship or summer vacation music video narrative, this is because it links well with the song and is engaging to the audience. In My Mind by Dynoro & Gigi D’Agostino – With this song, it is clearly defined that a sinister and creepy atmosphere is set, through the lyrics and music style used. From this both a narrative and message directly focused video would work; this is generally because mental health issues could be involved, linking well with the lyrics, but also a narrative could be set, possibly with children through the vocals but also in a horror genre. Cradles by Sub Urban – Finally in this song an obvious creepy/horror genre is set, through the music and lyrics
  • 12. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES In regards to techniques that will come across my music video, there is a wide range that surround the initial idea to create meaning, ideas, and effects on the audience when watching the music video that i will produce. Some of the techniques listed below, consisting of camera movement, angles and editing, visual effects, lip syncing, and cutting techniques, are described regarding how i could use them in my project: Camera movement techniques – Following camera movements, these consist of different shots, such as a panning or tracking shot, that generally are in a constant movement; whether that’s following a characters footsteps, tracking, or setting the mise-en-scene of a shot/scene, panning. This is evident in music videos such as ‘Earth’ (Lil Dicky), where a panning shot is initially used as the first shot of the video, denoting the LA skyscrapers, which is evidently linked across the music video in regards to the California fires; furthermore, it is also presented in ‘Titanium’ (David Guetta) where a tracking shot, following the footsteps of the main character of the narrative, is used throughout the music video in different places, such as in the beginning, middle and end. With regards to the different camera movements available, I think that it would be beneficial to use them throughout my video. I would use the following tracking shot to denote the movement of the main character, whether that’s from behind or focusing in on a certain body feature, such as their feet or arm/shoulder. This allows a free flowing transition between the narrative that is placed and the different shot/scenes that will be included, but also means it engages my audience more, as the narrative is moving forward; this is evident in the tracking shot that would be used, and effectively intrigues the audience into where they’re going and what may happen next, leaving them to carry on watching the video. I would also use the panning shot effectively to similarly intrigue the audience, yet primarily to set
  • 13. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO USE With regards to the general horror genre that I am following, there is stereotypical features that will be included within my music video, linking to other media sources relating to the same or similar style. Some of these features primarily include the setting, this mainly coming under very isolated and urban areas in dark or confined spaces, dress codes, including the denotation of simple dark clothing whilst limiting the amount of revealing styles (such as hoodies and long baggy clothing), camera movements/shots, incorporating the use of close ups and extreme long shots to evoke the idea of isolation (linking effectively alongside the stereotypical setting situations, as it helps identify them), and finally editing, primarily coming under the use of some fading shots yet mainly quick cutting and adding a vignette to emphasize the focus point of the music video. Initially, and possibly one of the most important factors in engaging the audience to the sinister genre that will be set throughout the music video, is the setting used. I plan to use a variety of different settings across a wide range of locations to hopefully create reliability within my audience, through having possibly encountered or seen these locations in your nearby area; this is effective through engaging the audience more and creating a stronger relationship that is built between myself and my audience, it also allows escapism, which is primarily evident in locations of urban areas who don’t have the ability to experience some of these locations physically. Further, these location that I will have chosen to be included within my music video (yet to be confirmed) will include stereotypical features of the horror genre, helping conform to society's expectations of scary and intense situations of which create a threatening atmosphere (something that is critical to the video), some of these features come under very isolated and urban areas in dark or confined spaces.
  • 14. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO USE CONTINUED In regards to others conventions that I will use in my music video effectively, yet also remaining important to the sinister genre, comes under dress codes. I plan to use a set style of clothing to help support the specific genre that is being presented, and to create a focus point of mystery within the music video alongside sinister connotations; these features conclude of primarily all black or dark colored clothing, whilst also consisting of a hood (this is critical in mystery context of the video, which also supports sinister connotations) and a baggy jumper/jacket. The use of these dress codes denoted on the main character of the music video helps support the sinister connotations that are essential, and as a result causes a sense of mystery, as nothing obvious to the figure and clothing creates any sense of identity; this evidently causes my audience to become intrigued into the narrative strand of the video, whilst also engaging the audience effectively to find out their identity, this remains visible in the last shot of the video, leaving them focused until the end. Furthermore, also one of the most important components to make up this video as a whole, comes under camera movements/shots. In regards to this aspect, it covers a lot; however, some elements to this cause stand out, such as panning, tracking and extreme long shots. Initially, the use of panning shots helps establish the mise-en-scene or situation of a character, this would be effective in allowing my audience to gather more of an understanding to the sinister narrative and atmosphere being set; alongside this, an extreme long shot works similarly. Further, the use of a tracking shot would help to move the narrative onwards, as it effectively follows the steps of the main character presented; this also can be used to focus in on a particular feature, creating a focus point or point of interest which may alter the audiences interpretation of the situation, character or place, this is useful in hinting at the mystery genre alongside.
  • 15. SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES As a result of creating a music video for the first time, there is a various amount of different opportunities and disadvantages when first producing it. Initially, I am going to go through some of the opportunities that will help me out in the near future, whilst also learning different aspects of directing a music video permanently. In regards to opportunities that will help me develop, they generally come under learning new skills, management/directing the filming of the video, meeting new people/actors, gaining a wider experience of producing, and in filming across a variety of different abstract locations. Initially, and as foremost one of the most important opportunity, comes under learning new skills. In regards to producing and directing a music video, the general new skills that I will develop are editing aspects, such as transitions and visually engaging effects, and finally different camera work styles/shots, primarily being panning and tracking shots to emphasize the accustomed genre. To begin with, editing aspects are effective and useful in engaging the audience, to present the scenario being set in the video, but also to display a more obvious understanding of the narrative/video as a whole in the audience, as different focus points and context can be individually emphasized; such as through the use of a vignette and blur effect, concealing the affected area, and as a results making the audience engage on the distinctive focal point, of which is intended by the use of these editing effects. Furthermore, also different camerawork styles/shots will develop alongside producing the video. These generally consist of panning and tracking shots, used to show more of an understanding of the situation or mise-en-scene through the audience (panning shot), but to also to quickly move onwards the narrative of the video (tracking shot if necessary). In conclusion, editing and camera work/shots are a very beneficial opportunity to take across making the music video project. This is primarily because these are skills of which will permanently help in the near future, whether that’s through producing good quality coursework for college/university, or through the range of different job opportunities that can come up across the media platform.
  • 16. SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED Furthermore, another opportunity that seems very important to myself through producing this music video project, whilst also remaining very important and being beneficial in the future, comes under management. In regards to producing and developing a music video, management has to be one of, if not the most crucial component to making a successful and well organized/planned music video. Management comes under a large range of different aspects, some of which consist of booking different places to record, hiring actors to participate within the video, and most importantly the timings/arranging of different scenes etc. In conclusion, management plays such a significant part in the music video, and evidently will be essential in my and anyone else's future; whether that's through a future job or in many different life situation which will occur, such as a holiday or appointments in health etc. Even more so, another opportunity that seems important in gathering and having a contented social life, whilst as usual remains very important and beneficial in the future, comes under meeting new people. It may seem obvious, but can make I big impact on your life permanently, whether its an actor you make friends with, it means that in other possible projects they would probably be more willing to work alongside you, due to your connection between yourselves. Furthermore, it could be a company rather than a person, and as a result can mean organizations collectively work together, which may bring in different communities and bring in the wider audience, generating more of a popularity and recognition nationally. In conclusion, meeting new people seems very obvious and insignificant, yet it is very beneficial in the long term, not just personally but also nationally, bringing in different communities from around the country, or even world if the project is of a big brand name. However, personally for me this opportunity is still greatly positive. Its effective in create connections with people in my local area, which is limited at the moment due to moving schools, but also means opportunities open up, whether that’s through these people I meet or as a collective with them.
  • 17. SUMMARY OPPORTUNITIES CONTINUED Furthermore, another opportunity that seems alongside all of the others, very important to myself, yet not so much everybody else this time, whilst remaining very beneficial in the near or far future, comes under gaining a wider experience. It is known that for most jobs a good experience is essential in setting a good example efficiently, that’s why part of this project is very effective in setting and beginning that journey of experience in the filming and editing and producing industry. Further, presenting the theme of producing the music video, directing it, and organizing everything, from booking equipment and times of filming different scenarios in every other location, all gives a very good and accurate representation of jobs and situations I may be incorporated within if I head towards the media industry. In conclusion, experience is such a significant element in identifying whether this is the right path for me to follow, but primarily is because it is an effective component in getting jobs and showing an understanding of the industry; coming under video producing and editing and directing and time management, all of which are essential in the media industry from day to day. Finally, another one of the opportunity's, and the final one alongside all of the others that have been beneficial, this also seems very important, yet is portrayed in a very insignificant and concealed point of interest, comes under filming across a variety of different abstract locations. This is one of the most important features of a film, as it can portray a specific characters situation or present a particular atmosphere, however, in the instance of being an opportunity, it is also very beneficial off camera. It can allow myself to reimagine the video as a whole, rethinking different shots, scenes and possibly the whole video, but also results in the opportunity to visit some incredible places, some of which may be concealed to the local public, whereas myself would have the right to film there. In conclusion, location can effectively impact the video as a whole, primarily altering the narrative and portrayal of characters; but also grants the opportunity to visit some amazing places, whether that’s a public place or private
  • 18. SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS As a result of creating a music video for the first time, there is a various amount of different opportunities and restrictions when first producing it. Adjacent to the opportunity's, I am going to go through some of the restrictions to my ideas of my music video now. In regards to restrictions that prevent myself from performing certain aspects of my ideas, they generally come under the total amount of budget allowed in the production of the video, accessibility to locations, being unable to use professional equipment, having to produce family friendly content for all, and finally the issue regarding copyright of certain types of music. Initially, and as foremost one of the biggest restrictions, when coming across producing a music video, comes under the total amount of budget allowed in the production of the video. Throughout music videos, generally a lot of money goes into hiring actors, locations, and booking out equipment; however, in regards to myself, there isn't a budget given, due to being a college project, meaning everything used must be free of charge. Due to this limitation, actors, have to be friends/family that are available, locations, primarily have to be public places, and finally equipment, also have to be free of charge from the college of which are booked in advance; as a result this limits the total amount of possibilities significantly, meaning that generally the video produced isn't to the best of its standard that it can achieve, portraying an unprofessional and poorly sophisticated music video being produced. However, alongside the budget being a compelling and momentous restriction to the video, some positives are available from this situation. Some of which come under generally more public places are used, meaning that more of a connection and bond is built between the video and its audience; this is primarily because the location used are reflective of real life situations and locations, meaning the video is much more approachable through being relatable to the audience present. In conclusion, the budget holds a significant impact on the total amount of possibilities available, consisting of generally location and
  • 19. SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS CONTINUED Furthermore, another restriction that holds a considerable and significant effect on the music video as a whole, yet remains still not completely essential in making the music video, comes under being unable to use some professional equipment. It is evident that in every music video available professional equipment is used efficiently and effectively, this is present through the quality of the recording and other equipment used, such as lighting and camera movement stabilizers. However, in regards to myself, some of these equipment choices are unavailable, primarily consisting of portable lighting etc; this is because the college are only able to provide the cameras, due to other equipment be excessively expensive, alongside the fact that if any is damaged then costs will be applied. In conclusion, it is obvious that a lack of professional equipment restricts the possibilities available when producing the video, and also will evidently create a video that is not to the best of its ability; however, in regards to essentials, cameras are provided and available, meaning a good quality recording is achievable, and helps support the fact that a music video can be produced from this, even though its limited. Even more so, another restriction that holds back the full potential of the music video being produced, yet once again isn't essentially needed, comes under having to produce family friendly content for all. Initially, once this was mentioned as a limitation to the video, it doesn’t affect myself alongside the choice of music I had chosen; yet in regards to other people, cause issues that significantly changes their video ideas as a whole. Currently in our time period, most songs don’t follow the family friendly content that is advised, primarily evident under the rock and rap genre; due to songs not following these advised restrictions, a lot of editing is then taken place to cover up swear words and explicit scenes etc, resulting in a prolonged music video generation, taking longer to finally release. In conclusion, this restrictions doesn’t affect me greatly, however may affect overs significantly; even though generally ideas of family friendly content is portrayed poorly in areas of the rock and rap genre, it does hold some
  • 20. SUMMARY RESTRICTIONS CONTINUED Furthermore, another limitation that affects everything significantly about the music video, no matter what choice of song you have specifically selected, comes under copyright of using certain types of music/songs. Across the music industry, once a song has been produced they are generally always then copyrighted, given the owner of the song the choice to do whatever they want with it, primarily giving the right to use it or not etc. This comes under a large issues across making a music video, as not having the right to a song can evidently change everything, because you wouldn’t be able to use it ever. In regards to myself, the song I have chosen already states it is non copyrighted, giving me the freedom to use it in anyway possible, and evidently means that I will be able to produce the video; however for other people, it will be a significant issues to their whole music video ideas. In conclusion, copyright is a serious issues in regards to making a music video, yet personally it doesn’t affect myself with the choice of music selected; however with other people, they would have to inquire on the use of the song/music type. Finally, the last restriction that can alter the production of the music video being created, yet isn’t essentially going to change the project as a whole, comes under accessibility to the locations. In regards to this it primarily comes under if we can access the location, whether its been locked off from the public or is in the boundary of private land, and if the crew can make it to the desired location/s, such as in the case of a family emergency of transport issues. If any of these issues appear in the case of an emergency, then the only option would be to either reschedule to a more appropriate date, suiting the needs of everybody to turn up, or relocate the filming scenario. In conclusion, having accessibility issues significantly alters the production line when filming the music video, meaning that the production of the video, in regards to filming and the editing, has been delayed to a further date, creating an inconvenience; however, if backup locations and dates are scheduled, in the case of an emergency, then

Initially, and the most important restriction which may apply, comes under transportation; this is primarily because the people acting in my music video come from further away locations, consisting of Wakefield and York. Furthermore, another limitation which could create a significant impact to the overall quality of the video being produced, comes under the general dark lighting in the scene; this is could cause a grainy effect to the recording, of which will evidently reflect an unprofessional and poorly produced video. Initially, there is a predominant risk of being hit by a car; even though the location of filming is in a closed off walkway tunnel, it is beside a very busy road where regularly cars pass at high speeds. Due to the evidently highly fast cars passing beside the location, when exiting/entering the location of filming, there will always be a significant risk of being hit, regarding why it is being identified here. In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under travelling from place to place, alongside having the right to film by a church, regarding privacy situations with nearby graves. Initially, a significant issues which is occurring within the different locations, comes under transportation; this is primarily because the people acting in my music video come from further away locations, consisting of Wakefield and York. Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, a few different options appear in this location; these primarily come under the risk of slipping on the uneasy ground, falling into the nearby ditch, and the risk of getting hit by passing vehicles. Initially, and very obviously with most outside locations, there is a risk of slipping on the uneasy ground, this primarily being mud and grass, in the case of bad weather occurring. Furthermore, having a nearby ditch evidently could cause harm to ourselves, this is predominantly because in the case of bad weather occurring again, which is highly likely, we could slip into this near risk. Alongside the other possible risks, the most significant one comes under being hit by a passing car; even though the location of filming is concealed to the side of the road in the distance, there will always

In regards to limitations, it primarily comes under traveling from place to place, alongside whether or not I have the right to film and access the abandoned buildings, and having to film in a generally dark area. First, transportation is a big restriction to the process, this is primarily because my actors etc in the music video come from farther away location, such as York/Wakefield. Furthermore, also whether or not I have the right to film the location, regardless of entering it, could cause a significant problem. Finally, the area is generally dark, causing a grainy effect to the recording, reflecting an unprofessional and poorly produced music video. Furthermore, another limitation which could create a significant impact to the overall quality of my video being produced, comes under the general dark lighting in the scene; this causes a grainy effect, and evidently reflects an unprofessional and poorly produced video. Finally, in regards to the risk assessment, a few different options up hear from this specific location; these primarily come under the risk of slipping and falling along the unleveled ground, and coming across any wild animals that may present a threatening behavior towards you. Initially, there is a risk of slipping a falling over in the case of bad weather occurring, primarily coming under rain as for snow or frost in unachievable in the current time period; this also may be possible under normal conditions, as for a lot of branches and roots along the pathway stick out, creating a numerous amount of hazards in total. Furthermore, and most finally for this location, comes under the possibility to come across a wild animal which may present a threatening atmosphere towards yourself; this seems unlikely but the opportunity still holds being possible with the various range of animals that are in the location.
  • 31. PERSONNEL In regards towards my crew, this significantly differs in comparison against other music videos, this is primarily because only myself is involved within the process of pre-production to filming and finale editing phases (otherwise known as the whole project). However, due to some locations involving a higher risk of people interrupting the scenarios, such as a town center, I did involve someone to keep watch of the surrounding area, in the case of somebody appearing they would politely interrupt them asking to currently wait until the shot had been captured. Furthermore, I had also used a family relative in their assistance to gather one recording of a pan from behind me, this was necessary as for it would seem impossible to perform by myself; alongside they were also useful in preventing oncoming strangers from interrupting the shot, of which would evidently mean for me to retake until another suitable time. Evermore so, some personnel's had been used in the production of my music video, yet to an extent of not actually participating or being involved within the technical aspects, they were primarily useful in the filming phase and this was their only beneficial involvement, not completely changing the project significantly.
  • 32. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC In regards towards props, these were not an essential or important implication that would be used in my music video; this category had primarily been scrapped and only come under the costume instead. The costume is the most important aspect that is essential within my music video i am to produce; this is primarily because it helps support the intended atmosphere and genre, these coming under sinister/threatening connotations alongside a sense of mystery so engagement in the audience is present throughout, whilst also being effective in portraying the figures lifestyle, of which the narrative consists of. The dress codes consist of generally full dark clothing whilst also incorporating a hoodie. Initially, the dark dress genre is essential in supporting the sinister and threatening atmosphere set tryout my music video; alongside this also creates a sense of mystery through the character's identity, as for nothing abstract or recognizable is achievable, of which further means a sense of engagement in the audience is present. And finally, having denoted a hood within the figure is necessary in concealing the face of the character; supporting the sense of mystery that is displayed throughout my audiences feelings. If I had the ability to change the dress codes present, I would; altering specific aspects to infer a sense of strength and dominance over the audience more. Initially, it is important to recognize that some of these atmospheres intended to emphasize through these changes (strength and dominance) is already displayed, primarily in the dark clothing and sense of mystery which creates a dominating attitude; however, this needs to be emphasized more, and in doing so I would change his footwear to big black boots, and also incorporate possibly a prop. The use of big black boots would help support the sense of strength, this is primarily because strength is required in wearing this clothing type whilst also having a close representation to Michael Myers (a mass serial killer); and then secondly, having a prop, such as a knife, would making it much more threatening and worrying throughout the audience, of which supports the portrayal of dominance intended whilst consisting the sinister and threatening atmosphere.
  • 33. TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
  • 34. CONCEPT BOARDS: THE DARK FIGURE In regards to creating this initial and prominent figure that appears throughout the music video, they need to be used effectively. Initially, I had come to conclude that a threatening atmosphere will be set through the character to create a greater effect on the audience, alongside also sinister connotations will be incorporated to support the atmosphere and help convey the message more. Through the characters dress codes they will primarily come under black/dark clothing consisting of a black hoodie; this seemed essential to get across as it lacks a sense of identity/recognition, conforming toward another genre being mystery. Furthermore, the figure would generally in his movement and position be concealing his face in a slow progressing from position to position, whether that be through walking etc; this also seemed essential in creating tension throughout the audience, engaging them more, but also through supporting that threatening connotations set. This juxtaposes effectively against scenes of him running, as for it differs incredibly to the usual portrayal of the character; once again making it much more intriguing into the character itself and the music video narrative.
  • 35. CONCEPT BOARDS: THE DARK FIGURE CONTINUED Upon the initial thoughts on the figures looks, representation, and characteristics, a blurry effect may be beneficial to incorporate. It allows the restriction of identity, which is idle throughout the music video, and supports sinister/threatening connotations around the character and atmosphere set, conforming to my expectations intended. However the blurry effect may look impressive, effective, and perfect to suits the needs of the general ideas around my video, it does hold some disadvantages. In regards to applying the effect, initially it is very difficult to do this, as for lowering the focus can display the intended visual, yet also affects the background; creating a pointlessness to the need for locations. Furthermore, there is a range of different variants to the focusing aspect, producing a clearly visible structure to the figure or a slim irregular look; the issue here is that it would almost seem impossible to produce the same look/style and extent of blurriness toward the figure in every different shot intended throughout the music video, from start to end. This would evidently look poor, and infer an unprofessional music video; conveying a range of different messages throughout my audience about myself as a producer, editor, and actor in my work.
  • 36. CONCEPT BOARDS: ISOLATED LOCATIONS On of the most important factors into making a music video comes under locations. In regards to locations they are imperative to include within my music video, they primarily come under isolated and or abandoned locations of interest. Initially it is important to recognize that locations help convey certain messages that the producer/artist etc want to emphasize upon and help support a narrative through its free flowing transitions from place to place; because of this, it seems impeccable that in relation toward my music video, abandoned and isolated locations help support the main message i am wanting to spread across, coming under mental health, whilst also inferring different meaning and generating ideas across the identity of the main character, being a figure, of which evidently creates more of a tension and engagement in the audience.
  • 37. RIP-O-MATIC You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to make
  • 52. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE Week 1 & 2 - Initially, during the first few days of pre-production, i am to to spend this beginning week on aspects of research. The primary achievement that needs to be acknowledged and hopefully performed consists of a larger understanding into music videos themselves. Generally it may seem an obvious statement to hear, having most people watched music videos on a daily basis as the world increases in technological advancements; however, there is much more present to than just grabbing a bunch of footage and putting it together, evidently producing a music video, of which will then be displayed upon a various amount of social media websites. In current time, music videos consist upon a large range of different ideas, portrayed through different scenes/lyrics/shots, whilst also effectively engaging the audience in contrasting information throughout; these ideas displayed are some key features of which i will identify across a range of different music videos (such as white stripes and Franz Ferdinand), and evidently become very beneficial in the production and end product of this project. Week 3 - Next, after the pre-production phases comes the filming phase; it is quite obvious want this means, to beginning filming the music video that will evidently be your end product. This will predominantly be finished during my own spare time, as for lesson time still comes under finishing off research requirements and coursework regarding the project; furthermore, the research produced here will primarily come under planning, risk assessing, and location confirming, this is due to the relevance between them. Week 4 & 5 - Finally, during the last couple of weeks, of which closes the project to an end, I am to spend this time on aspects of editing and my final evaluation of the end product etc. Initially it is important to recognise that the editing component should only take a couple of days to complete, of which leaves 4 days to finish off every other uncompleted work and evidently the evaluation to finish everything off. It may seem at ease of accomplishing this, however due to the large extent of work required and detail that is necessary within it, the outcome of finishing everything to an outstanding rate, of which i hope to achieve, is very difficult in achieving under this small amount of allotted time.
